As a vegetarian, whenever anybody suggests a meal in a steak joint a rush of panic floods over me…read more What will I eat? What if I'm left with a salad!? (I may be a veggie but it doesn't mean I love lettuce leaves!) So when my friends planned Sunday lunch in The Cowshed I sighed a heavy sigh. But I had nothing to fear - with two vegetarian options on the lunch time menu, at least I had something to choose from (Albeit a standard veggie burger or a goats cheese tart - two 'classics') and since this was a restaurant for meat eaters I could hardly complain! My burger was delicious, served with tasty chunky chips and washed down with hearty cider. My friend's roast dinners looked fabulous too. The service was very welcoming and the atmosphere was just what you want on a Sunday - full of fun and laughter.

While The Cowshed's poster mammal isn't smiling it still tickles me so I agreed to dinner here with my steak loving other half. The focus here is all about good old-fashioned British dishes, particularly steak and it's many guises. My partner ordered a steak cooked on a hot stone tablet right in front of him - similar to the way you can get hot plates in Indian restaurants, except this actually allowed him to partially cook the steak himself. As an occasional vegetarian there wasn't a great amount of choice for me to pick a main course but the starters and desserts were divine! It is quite pricey but I would come back for the chocolate mouse alone and my partner can whole-heartedly vote for the sirloin steak!

The ambiance is good. The meat quality is above average. Beef was prepared under ordered…read moretemperature by a full rating... medium rare was very rare. Medium was medium rare, but that's better than over cooking it. Service was not great. Our server was not well versed with the food or drinks and not able to answer questions. We were stuck in a dark corner. Tables around us were attended more frequently and sooner, even when they arrived after us. Wine pours are adequate, but spirit pours are very light. A double whisky was so small that I decided not to spend the money on a second drink. That was after the bar was not able to make a very standard cocktail, and the server had no clue either. So 3/5 stars because of poor service, a mediocre bar, and expensive alcohol.

We booked a table in the morning knowing that places are usually fairly busy on Friday nights, when we arrived our table wasn't yet ready, but we weren't fazed we sat at the bar and ordered drinks while waiting for our table. Thankfully our table was ready after about 10mins, their cocktails were actually very tasty and the bartender was attentive and informative of the different drink options. Once seated it took about 15mins for our server to come to our table, we ordered the honey beer bread as a started...when it arrived it tasted stale and the beef dripping butter had a very strange taste...we ignore that assuming it just wasn't something we loved, then we ordered our streaks and shared a side of mashed potatoes and a side of onion rings...I will say the steak was cooked a perfect medium rare as I requested but it was lacking seasoning. A bit of salt definitely helped the steak! The sides were not good the onion rings looked nice and crispy but the inner batter was raw and they tasted overly oily, the mashed potatoes weren't creamy they were dry and very bland. Service was slow the whole night, but on the plus side it gave us a chance to really take in the art part of the restaurant. I adored how each both was a different theme very cute and unique. Over all the steak was mostly good, but the food was overpriced for the quality.

So good to see a small business work their way up. From a small van outside Temple Meads to now…read morerunning a full size restaurant in St Nicks! In the past few years my idea of a burger has been completely flipped, turned upside down! With the introduction of brioche buns and baconaise (what sweet sweet genius came up with that one) I have been outstanded. The location of Chomp is great, loads of parking around, especially if you know the tricks of the trade ;) it's a modern yet chilled interior which really really worked for me. The right light levels and music volume so you don't overhear other people's comments and you can spill and bit of food on yourself and no one will notice. That was a big bonus for me, especially if you sample their brilliant range of ciders, ales and lagers. Staff were very friendly, great waitress and chef was a friendly bloke! Prices were so reasonable, £10 for burger with fries and slaw (no idea what happened to Cole from coleslaw, poor bloke) and drinks were a fair price too. They also do promo nights where you can get burger, sides and a drink for £10 or something. They also do specials every now and again, the other night was a Stilton burger - sounded perfect. But for your first time you always have to go tradition, the house special. Your classic burger with only some onion rings on the side. Perfection. Would definitely recommend, I am really finding it hard to find bad places in Bristol lately, competition is tough but these guys have hit the nail on the head. Bye bye Gourmet burger Kitchen

Love this place! A very warm welcome at the door. The waitress was a bit nervous I think bless her,…read morebut she was attentive and pleasant! Very cool interior - stripped back as you'd expect in a steak place. I love the simplicity of the menu - a few steaks, 2 burgers (3 if you count the veggie - which I never do) and a few classic cocktails, plus wine and beer. I went for my favourite cocktail - the classic old fashioned (shame they didn't have barrel aged, but hey that's just me being a pretentious d*ck). Perfectly mixed - a beautiful bourbon kick but not too overpowering, just the right amount of orange flavour and very refreshing. Starter was 3x black pudding beignets - and as a bit of a black pudding fiend, these sated my cravings very nicely indeed. Perfectly battered, not too heavy with a delicious garlic and chive mayo. Bliss. Having found out it was national burger day too late, I went for an 8oz fillet, with blue cheese sauce - obvs. The whole experience was world class. Steak was a perfect medium rare, with a beautiful char on the outside. The seasoning on the chips was exceptional. And the blue cheese sauce - oh man. Just phenomenal. Plus a delicious side of mushrooms and spinach. I couldn't resist hitting the bourbon tasting board - and I definitely don't regret it. 3 excellent drams, all of which had complex and very different flavours. A nice touch offering something a bit different to go with your steak (hic). The standout definitely being the Woodford Reserve Rye - mind blowingly delicious. The Bookers blew my tits off. 63.7%... WHAAAT. Accompanied by a 2/3 of the house IPA - perfect amount of hop and washed everything down nicely! Overall a superb experience and I will continue coming here at every possible opportunity when I'm in Bristol.
