Yes! This place reminds me of my Devon days. Specialising in excellent quality, locally sourced meat from the South West, The Cowshed will certainly fill you up. There's a lovely atmosphere inside the restaurant, like a country kitchen, and it does well not too look too much like a gastro pub. The restaurant is always full of happy eaters. Currently, they are running and very reasonably priced Christmas Menu, where could be a better place to go for that succulent roast dinner?

REALLY GOOD. The steak was perfect and so many sides to choose from. Probably won't be going again in a long time. Went there in October and spent too much for one meal. After that, I guess I just cooked myself some food for two weeks. But it was really good. Highly recommended! I had the rib eye steak and then cauliflower cheese. Awesome!

Medium was medium rare, but that's better than over cooking it. Service was not great. Our server was not well versed with the food or drinks and not able to answer questions. We were stuck in a dark corner. Tables around us were attended more frequently and sooner, even when they arrived after us. Wine pours are adequate, but spirit pours are very light. A double whisky was so small that I decided not to spend the money on a second drink. That was after the bar was not able to make a very standard cocktail, and the server had no clue either. So 3/5 stars because of poor service, a mediocre bar, and expensive alcohol.

We booked a table in the morning knowing that places are usually fairly busy on Friday nights, when we arrived our table wasn't yet ready, but we weren't fazed we sat at the bar and ordered drinks while waiting for our table. Thankfully our table was ready after about 10mins, their cocktails were actually very tasty and the bartender was attentive and informative of the different drink options. Once seated it took about 15mins for our server to come to our table, we ordered the honey beer bread as a started...when it arrived it tasted stale and the beef dripping butter had a very strange taste...we ignore that assuming it just wasn't something we loved, then we ordered our streaks and shared a side of mashed potatoes and a side of onion rings...I will say the steak was cooked a perfect medium rare as I requested but it was lacking seasoning. A bit of salt definitely helped the steak! The sides were not good the onion rings looked nice and crispy but the inner batter was raw and they tasted overly oily, the mashed potatoes weren't creamy they were dry and very bland. Service was slow the whole night, but on the plus side it gave us a chance to really take in the art part of the restaurant. I adored how each both was a different theme very cute and unique. Over all the steak was mostly good, but the food was overpriced for the quality.

In the past few years my idea of a burger has been completely flipped, turned upside down! With the introduction of brioche buns and baconaise (what sweet sweet genius came up with that one) I have been outstanded. The location of Chomp is great, loads of parking around, especially if you know the tricks of the trade ;) it's a modern yet chilled interior which really really worked for me. The right light levels and music volume so you don't overhear other people's comments and you can spill and bit of food on yourself and no one will notice. That was a big bonus for me, especially if you sample their brilliant range of ciders, ales and lagers. Staff were very friendly, great waitress and chef was a friendly bloke! Prices were so reasonable, £10 for burger with fries and slaw (no idea what happened to Cole from coleslaw, poor bloke) and drinks were a fair price too. They also do promo nights where you can get burger, sides and a drink for £10 or something. They also do specials every now and again, the other night was a Stilton burger - sounded perfect. But for your first time you always have to go tradition, the house special. Your classic burger with only some onion rings on the side. Perfection. Would definitely recommend, I am really finding it hard to find bad places in Bristol lately, competition is tough but these guys have hit the nail on the head. Bye bye Gourmet burger Kitchen

Love this place! A very warm welcome at the door. The waitress was a bit nervous I think bless her,…read morebut she was attentive and pleasant! Very cool interior - stripped back as you'd expect in a steak place. I love the simplicity of the menu - a few steaks, 2 burgers (3 if you count the veggie - which I never do) and a few classic cocktails, plus wine and beer. I went for my favourite cocktail - the classic old fashioned (shame they didn't have barrel aged, but hey that's just me being a pretentious d*ck). Perfectly mixed - a beautiful bourbon kick but not too overpowering, just the right amount of orange flavour and very refreshing. Starter was 3x black pudding beignets - and as a bit of a black pudding fiend, these sated my cravings very nicely indeed. Perfectly battered, not too heavy with a delicious garlic and chive mayo. Bliss. Having found out it was national burger day too late, I went for an 8oz fillet, with blue cheese sauce - obvs. The whole experience was world class. Steak was a perfect medium rare, with a beautiful char on the outside. The seasoning on the chips was exceptional. And the blue cheese sauce - oh man. Just phenomenal. Plus a delicious side of mushrooms and spinach. I couldn't resist hitting the bourbon tasting board - and I definitely don't regret it. 3 excellent drams, all of which had complex and very different flavours. A nice touch offering something a bit different to go with your steak (hic). The standout definitely being the Woodford Reserve Rye - mind blowingly delicious. The Bookers blew my tits off. 63.7%... WHAAAT. Accompanied by a 2/3 of the house IPA - perfect amount of hop and washed everything down nicely! Overall a superb experience and I will continue coming here at every possible opportunity when I'm in Bristol.

Plonked slap bang on an island near Old Bridewell and not far from an all you can eat pizza place - the location says a lot. Very occassionally my colleagues and I used to venture here for a post work pint. Their buy-one-free/alcopop pitchers/varieties of aftershocks are enough to cause Gordon Brown to have a heart attack. These are exactly the sorts of offers that encourage binge drinking and don't let you go until you're vomitting in the gutter (not talking from personal experience, may I add). The regulars seem the type to make the most of these offers each and every day. I have eaten at the Bay Horse, once. It was none to shoddy, a plateful of nachos smothered in cheddar and salsa from a jar and nuked in the microwave. Not really much that can go wrong with that, so I can't complain. The bottles of wine are on the vinegary side and there was a blockage in the loo. Unfortunate really. I've visited worse places, but with an abundance of great bars just down the road you really don't need to prove me wrong.

It's quite similar too but compares favourably to Bristol's three Weatherspoons (that's right, our fair city supports three of them, and they're always packed as well), but that's not saying an awful lot. The seats and tables are a tad cleaner and the staff a bit more with it. Although it's certainly not as nice a building as the Commercial Rooms - Weatherspoons' tactic of putting poor pubs in beautiful buildings trumps them here. There's food on offer and a reasonable range of beers. Nothing to special in either respect, but if you're fussy about either then there's plenty of other places nearby offering better food and a greater range of drinks. It's harder to find somewhere that beats them on price, though - there's a couple of drinks deals that are probably responsible for a lot of the puke you see round Bristol on a Sunday morning. Cheap and in the right place, The Bay Horse doesn't really excel in any other department

Things get a bit better on entry. The long bar sweeps through the room elegantly, bringing up the character of the place. Although it could easily be dark and dingy, given the shape the room, they've lit it up well and succeeded in making it feel cosy. A good place to sit out a cold evening. They've made an effort with the selection of beers on offer. Prices hover around three pounds for a pint, which is a bit steep but fair considering what they're offering and the surroundings. Probably in virtue of not being like the rest of the drinking establishments along the road, this place doesn't get too many students (make what you want of that comment - personally I like a place with a studenty feel, but others disagree strongly). They do a Sunday roast, but I really would advise against it, there are much better options nearby. But defiantly come here with a group of mates, sit around one of the high old oak tables, grab a pint (well one for each of you) and soak up the atmosphere. The Farthing is the only pub left in a sea of Tea Rooms and Falafel shops (or hippy nonsense as my unenlightened friends would say). Literally it's hilarious; it looks so out of place sat there by the road amongst the plethora of glass fronted, double glazed, chain restaurants and hair dressers. Let's just hope it stays there!
