Two years ago, I was diagnosed with a debilitating nervous system condition that has completely changed how I engage in fitness. But being the stubborn "gym rat" that I am, I have refused to give up lifting and sprinting. My condition has caused major changes in my gait, proprioception, and running mechanics, which have been causing me a lot of silly injuries. A close friend recommended Sneakerama, theorizing that maybe "the right" shoes could help. I was skeptical, but decided to pop in to see what all of the hype among my avid runner friends was all about! When I walked in, I was welcomed with a friendly greeting and immediately jumped into a conversation about what my goals were. When I explained my wild healthy history, Alex listened empathetically and almost immediately knew what I needed - a minimalist shoe with a wide toe box to help correct my over-pronation and balance issues. He came back with four different styles, each with unique features which he explained thoroughly and allowed me to take for a "test stroll"! I ended up choosing a very cool pair of Altras - a brand I had never even heard of before! The next morning, I tried out my new shoes at the gym and I was THRILLED! I felt much more stable and was able to better engage targeted muscles while lifting. These Altras are a GAME CHANGER! Not only do they have me feeling better supported, they've also given me my confidence back! :) Sneakerama is a hidden gem! I grew up in Worcester and had never. been inside... I wish I had discovered this place earlier! Once the line of customers started rolling in, he and his wife handled each person with care and courtesy. I was surprised at how many people are out looking for what `are - let's be frank - old lady shoes. I was also surprised at how many times I looked at a style and said, "I'd actually wear that one!" Propet, Asics, New Balance, Aetrex, Drew, Foamtreads - you name it, they have a comfortable shoe for men & women in every size from the narrowest to widest. Dressy, casual, running and walking shoes are all here. Granted, we're talking mostly shades of black, brown or cream but still if your feet are looking to be cushioned, cossetted or float along - go here! They will get down on the floor like shoe people used to do, measure for your exact sze, regardless of what you THINK it is, and find you a pair of shoes to fit perfectly. We spent 90 minutes while Mum tried on pair after pair, walked around the store and debated the merits of brown vs. brown vs cognac vs. brown. They were patient, pleasant and encouraged her to take her time!! Have you been to a retail environment lately where (1) a person wanted to help you, (2) was patient and understanding, (3) didn't leave you to work things out for yourself? The back wall was lined with all the orthotics you could want to make your shoe feel perfect. I fondled the pretty laces longer than I really should have and almost bought a pair of woven fabric oxfords that, in my defense you really have to see to appreciate. I'm not going to be here every week, but we walked out with exactly one pair of shoes that aren't ugly, are casual and sporty-looking, weren't overpriced and are most definitely comfortable. My initial scan showed me a handsome "older gent" (egads, maybe 55?) was leaning on his forearms against one of the shelves. The Marlboro Cowboy with a Sam Elliot on his upper lip, eyed me. (Inside, I thought, "hm, maybe he's wondering what a woman is doing in a store that sells workboots?") Then he said, "Can I help you with something?" And yes, yes, he could! He actually paid attention to what I said (black only, no copper rivets) and I chose two pairs of shoes in the space of four minutes ($59 and $89). When he moved around behind the cash register to ring me up, his colleagues (two other gents sans fancy facial hair) asked me, "How'd he do?" to which I responded with a shoulder shrug and a "meh" keeping in tradition with the reserve of New Hampshah. The gents smiled and mustache said, "they are trying to get rid of me because I'm too old." To this I replied, "they are just jealous because they can't grow a mustache like yours." While he was shopping, another saleswoman took time with me - I tried on probably 10 pairs of shoes - "just for fun." They gave me an appointment for 10 AM on a Saturday. The woman in charge did not show up until 9:59 and proceeded to go in the store, bring the sign out to Main St that said Open, then go back in and pull out the Adirondack chairs and clothes to put outside. This took about 15+mins- not sure why this couldn't have been done at 9:45. Either that or don't have consigners come in at 10:00 if you aren't ready at 10. Once I walked in I wasn't even greeted. She told me to look around while she went through my items. After some time, she kept a handful and told me they really don't accept Old Navy or Gap unless the tag is on it! Really? Where does it say that on your website? I had a couple almost brand new coats and sweaters she didn't take because they didn't have the tags on them. No offense but if people want new clothes they will go directly to the store. A total waste of my Saturday morning....
