We had also made a reservation for our anniversary, so that was disappointing. We were seated behind a pillar instead. Throughout the evening, not a single member of the waitstaff smiled. They all looked unhappy to be there, which created a surprisingly cold atmosphere. None of the staff ever came by to ask how our meal was, and no one acknowledged our anniversary. The restaurant itself wasn't nearly as elegant or luxurious as its reputation suggests. Aside from the lobster tank, the décor and atmosphere felt rather ordinary. To make matters worse, our view overlooked a wire fence and a parking area instead of the beautiful ocean setting we had expected. There were also several odd service issues. I ordered a gin martini. They said they were out of green olives, so I requested a lemon twist instead. The drink arrived with black olives and a lemon twist, which was confusing. As for the food, the complimentary bread with the crab pâté was excellent and easily the highlight of the meal. Unfortunately, everything after that was underwhelming. The sea bass was bland and forgettable, and the vegetables were overcooked to the point of being mushy. What made the evening especially disappointing is that every other restaurant we've visited in Cascais has been wonderful. Friendly, smiling staff checked on us, made us feel welcome, and served memorable meals--often at much lower prices. It sports a large outdoor dining area (roughly 20+ tables). Our waiter (as so many in Lisbon) also spoke English, Spanish, and a little French. We all had fun(?) trying to practice our own other language with him (me Sp and her Fr). He was... polite. There are multiple seafood platters on their menu and they are somewhat grouped by theme such as primarily shellfish or primarily fish. We opted for the shellfish (crab, shrimp, clams, snails, even barnacles!) all ocean-derived and nearly all are served precooked/chilled FYI. I lamented to our waiter that there might be too many shrimp and maybe not enough crab. He said, but why, it's all you can eat! Whaaat? This is nowhere clear from the menu but that made our decision easy. We tweaked the initial order and subsequently got a couple of refills on the crab claws once we finished the (enormous) first platter. The barnacles were our least favorite - roughly 1 inch long rubbery, super salty tubes. In Portugal, as most of Europe, there is no free tap water. Anywhere. There is ample plain (bottled) or sparkling (bottled) and each always comes in glass (different brands) and typically runs about 3 Euros for either. Throughout the week I made accidental requests for "seltzer" and always received a "pardon?" Their terms are sparkling or "with gas." Our bill total came to €101 which included about €10 in VAT tax, two orders of bread; two glasses of wine and a bottle of water. Not bad at all. Service was consistently slow and you had to "find/hail" your waiter for anything. We learned this was the norm in most restaurants throughout Europe and tipping is generally not expected because they all receive standard wages. We tacked on 5-10% nearly everywhere because, well, one less reason to dislike Americans?
