So many times in college, I would stop by Jimenez mid-day for my fix of their Three Amigos plate: Asado de Puerco, Carne Guisada, & Picadillo. Served with a fair helping of chips and salsa, it was a perfect lunch. Their tacos made them one of the best spots in Lubbock. Their placement in the Top 50 Taco Joints in Texas by Texas Monthly is well deserved. On Saturday, the game changes as they serve a Texas Monthly recognized barbecue. Their brisket is delectable, their sausage has a perfect kick, and all their sides are delightful. One of their delights is the La Tia. A barbecue sandwich except it's served on a house-made concha. Holy smokes. It's sugary and if served with brisket, is a glorious creation. I was driving through Lubbock and had to make a stop when I found out they were serving barbecue on a Friday. I got their Brisket Specialty Taco: two corn tacos with beans, shredded cheese, fried egg, and, of course, brisket. In addition, because my greed has no bounds, I got their Philthy Taco: 2 corn tacos, fried egg, potatoes, salsa ranchero, queso, and their smoked barbacoa. I called ahead and ordered before they closed at 2 pm and picked them up right at 1:57 pm (praise the lord). I mowed down both of them. For two tacos, they are most filling. I would've been full off of one. I am still wowed by what they can whip up. It's to-go only as Jimenez runs a small little shop on 34th Street, but they pack it with a ton of love and might. They're some of the best people in Lubbock, and Lubbock gives them all the love back. They just simply don't miss. RIYL: Mexican pastries, tacos, and barbecue

11June2026 I have been married to a Lubbock Native for 27…read moreyears now, and for all of this time, I have been hearing about Spanky's, just across from Texas Tech University. She has been hyping up this joint forever and during this trip to her hometown, we ended up there on our first night we were in town. On the outside, it looks like the typical university food joint that could be at any university town across America. It was small with a few tables and booths and had stuff across the walls that yelled TEXAS TECH RED RAIDERS so loud that it could be seen from the ISS. Apparently, the owner is a big fan and possibly an Alumna of TTU. We ordered the hand dipped mushrooms and onion rings to go along with our burgers. Little did I know what an experience the two appetizers would be. Lets just say that I have NEVER has such wonderful shrooms and rings ... ever. Thats saying something. The mushrooms are not the typical soft, mushy ones that many places serve out of the Sysco bags ... no, these were easily identifiable as button mushrooms even through the crispiness of the batter. Firm, sliceable and easily skewered by a fork to be dipped in ranch sauce. In short ... they were lip-smackin good. The onion rings, dipped in the same batter, cooked in the same oil and served at the same temperature were just as delectable. They were thick sliced sweet yellows that held their toothiness throughout the frying process. Just the bite into it was yummy, sweet and crispy ... all at the same time. These reminded me of the onion rings I used to get at Tookies down in Seabrook, Tx during the 70's and 80's. For my main, I chose the "Hotter than Hell Burger" with crinkle fries. I like hot and spicy and expected it to actually be hotter than it was. The sliced jalapeño and habanero spread were present and did the job of letting my taste buds know they were doing their job. It just wasn't the knockout I was expecting from a burger place serving university students that would eat really spicy stuff on a dare. Don't get me wrong, that burger was really good, just as my Wife said it would be. That statement is truth, not hype, but hotter than hell, naah. More like hotter than heck. My biggest disappointment was the limited selection of good beer. Light beer, cheap lagers and Mexican standards. Would it hurt to put in an IPA or a Stout? Overall, the staff were wonderful and answered any of the myriad of questions I had about their fare. It was an actual experience for me, especially after all of the hype my Wife told me over the decades. Usually, after a big span of time, places from our youth let us down. Spanky's is NOT a place like that. I will be sure to make it there on the next trip to Lubbock ... even if my Wife isn't with me. Ciao, Darrell

When the right people succeed in a small town like Lubbock, there's nothing but joy I feel. One of…read morethe best consistent and on-point food trucks in Lubbock for a while has been Taste Buds. Spending many weekends outside Good Line in Tech Terrace, Taste Buds is a modern take on cafe food. They use some of the freshest ingredients in Lubbock and put so much care into their small but ever-changing menus every week. For the past few years, they've been running out of a food trailer, but thanks to their quality and success, they opened a brick and mortar location off 50th Street earlier this year. I finally got to check out their new spot, and it's everything I'd hoped it'd be. When I went on Friday, they were hosting an artisan market on their premises so they were pretty busy selling out of their menu, but my girlfriend and I were able to get what we wanted. Inside, the shop is decorated to the nines with decor and cute artifacts everywhere. It felt like a curated antique shop. If you see the pictures attached to this review you'll understand. I ordered a lemon pepper seasoned version of their Fried Chicken Sammich that has some of the freshest lettuce around and an excellent mayo (maybe house made?) on their sesame seed bun. The chicken was super crispy but not dried out and overcooked on the inside. Fantastic. My girlfriend ordered their weekend special naan wrap with chicken with cherry tomatoes, lettuce, and pickled onions. She loved it. Both of our meals were served with their house-made chips that were crispy and fresh. I could eat a whole bag of them. For dessert, we split a Chocolate Cake with a blueberry compote. It was very similar to a black forest cake, though the compote was served on the side. All the flavors played the same as a black forest cake. It was a great conclusion to the meal. The prices are pretty fair for the quality of the food and the fresh ingredients. The sandwich ran me $14.75 and the cake was $6.99 which was a great size to split between two people. You're paying for fresh ingredients and quality here, so it's worth any price tag. Taste Buds is still reaping the rewards of their success thanks to the quality food they put on the table, and I'm excited to see them continue to have success in Lubbock because there's no place doing it like them.
