10/10 experience!! First off, we had the most amazing waiter (Ron)- who was one of the best waiters I've ever had. He was incredibly kind, accommodating, gave great recommendations, and went above and beyond. You never know what to expect with a chain-like BBQ spot, but this place did NOT disappoint. The appetizers were amazing- we got the potato skins and beef burnt ends. The BBQ it self was delicious.. my husband and I got the prime short rib and brisket burnt ends (in photo), cheesy corn, baked beans (were smoky not too sweet), onion rings (SO GOOD), and slaw (a bit watery but okay). I would not recommend the pork burnt ends, the brisket ones were 10/10- thanks for the rec Ron. My kids got the kids rib plate. Like everywhere in town all the employees were extremely friendly. Walked in and the smell of BBQ wafted into our nostrils. Was a lot of people waiting on a Friday night but was only about 20 minutes to be seated. I noticed after they take reservations on Open Table. Pretty much everybody at the table got the burnt ends and sausage combo. I got bbq beans and steamed veggies for my sides. Didn't notice the grilled veggie choice until I saw my wife's. Get the grilled veggies. They're grilled over wood and soak up the flavor. My steamed veggies were sad in comparison. The beef brisket burnt ends were awesome and had a delicious seasoning bark. My wife's pork burnt ends were equally good. The sausage was ok but looked like a giant summer sausage. Odd texture vs what I am used to so wasn't my favorite. First time trying this restaurant on a Friday night. We were craving some BBQ. We arrived here and got seated right away at a booth toward the front. It's a cozy place with lots of Tiffany glass deco. Main dining area has a fireplace with a large Tiffany glass ceiling dome. The menu had quite a few selections. I opted for their burned end, brisket with baked beans and fries. Once our orders was placed, it didn't take them long at all for our food to come out. I totally forgot to take photos for this review and started eating right away. This was probably the fastest service I ever had anywhere at restaurant. Our waiter was attentive. Staffs were friendly and overall service was great. Their beans was cooked just the way I like it. The burned ends could be a little more tender. Brisket tasted great. BBQ sauce was not bad. I asked for spicy BBQ sauce which to me was mild and not spicy at all. I would come back again when in the area. read more

Smokehouse is a solid mid-tier local BBQ operation with three locations - with it's "upscale" atmosphere and a menu that offers lots more than BBQ; I think of Smokehouse as a hybrid between Smokestack and 54th St. Grill. It has the type of ambiance that Smokestack has, yet has not quite achieved their level of quality. A diverse menu of not just BBQ standards but steak, seafood, salads and appetizers like a 54th St or a similar type chain but miles ahead in ambiance, BBQ offerings and quality. Smokehouse would be the type of place for a compromise dinner when some want BBQ and others don't. Not the best BBQ in town... but no shame in their game. Speaking of compromise; I actually drove to Independence to check out a new BBQ joint up the street but they were closed so I headed here and I have no regrets. My Burnt Ends beef and sausage platter came with fries and slaw, bread, pickles and a cup of spicy bbq sauce and ranch for fry dipping. Smokehouses' sausage, beans and slaw are in my top tier for local offerings, and the beans and slaw are available at a retail level. My only issue last night was some of the burnt end chunks were a bit tough - these were not the "melt in your mouth" morsels that elevate other places in this BBQ Capital to the top tier. For pumping out mass quantities at multiple locations with a nice atmosphere, fair pricing, and good service Smokehouse is deserving of support and longevity - I wish I could give 5 stars but that would not be fair to that elite team of BBQ joints that has made this city famous. read more

Hubby and son stopped at this great barbecue place on a trip to Kansas City! Besides having a beautiful interior, the food was amazing! The bar area looked great, but they sat in the regular dining room. The waitress was friendly and efficient. Hubby had brisket burnt ends and chicken, which came with one side. He had some delicious barbecue baked beans. The chicken was tender and flavorful, and the ends were meaty. Son had pulled pork with a side of fries. He said it was flavorful as well. Once we got our order is a VERY good. While the brisket was pretty skimpy it was perfectly cooked with a slight smoky flavor and really moist. Met with a big group of family and friends at Smokehouse BBQ and spent time catching up over some good barbecue. Marci took care of our entire table one-handed and with ease and was very helpful on menu selections, getting our food out while it was hot, and making sure we were having a good time. I had the two meat platter of turkey and brisket along with baked beans and potato salad. It was all delicious and with generous portions that I had to walk out the door with a take out box. Marci offered us dessert but I just couldn't do it! But the desserts looked delicious including the carrot cake and of course they have them on display right as you come in to get seated. Started our dining experience at the place next door, Visit started great. Friendly greeting as the staff opened the door for our party. Seated immediately. I was expecting a slight delay as it is 1pm on Valentine's Day. But we sat at our table while one server in our section ran back and forth from table to table. And at one count five people were at the door. We sat for over five minutes without being acknowledged. We put our menus aside, as we had so much time to peruse the menu we knew what we wanted. Waiting waiting. I would have expected the managers to at least grab drink orders or run food if they were overwhelmingly busy, but really not that many people in the building. We left went Smokehouse BBQ. It was fantastic from the moment we walked in. Staff was friendly and helpful. Food was beyond delicious, hot, timely and savory. Our server was phenomenal, anticipated our needs and even made sure we left with our drinks. I would highly highly recommend this place. The dining experience was fabulous. I am from Texas. I usually try to review restaurants on all the mentioned criteria but rarely say anything about the taste unless it's bad based on preparation. I am here and want to try the bbq as Missouri intends it. I'm not here to critique the taste, except today. I ordered the 2 slice lunch plate. I asked for brisket and sausage. Both meats were sliced incredibly thin. The sausage was also wider than the brisket. I'm used to sausage being served in the casing, like a sausage or hot dog, but sliced super thin from what appears to be a block and and not a link. It reminded me of higher quality spam. Flavor actually wasn't bad, just different. The brisket was tender and was okay. Tasted like it was cooked in an over and not a smoker. I mention it because the place is called Smokehouse. If you have ever been to San Antonio it reminds me of "higher" end Bill Miller. I had the beans and fries as sides. The fries were okay but the beans were really good. Definitely getting the beans again. The restaurant also seems designed after a steakhouse. It's dark with dark wood everywhere. It seemed clean but dated. I was in a booth and the lady behind me kept moving and I could feel every muscle twitch. The service was great though. Sarah was my server and she was on top of it and made great suggestions. Would I go back? Maybe. The other choices around the hospital seem poor so maybe I will. read more

The restaurant is really dated and seemingly clean. The service was great but the food was simply not good. The BBQ was dry, flavorless and seemed microwaved. The steamed veggies side dish was a bland watery mess and cole slaw didn't taste quite right, like it needed some flavor. The only good part of the meal was the mac and cheese which I know is not house made. If I wanted packaged mac anf cheese I would have gone to grocery store and saved a pile of money. For probably the third Father's Day in a row my son and daughter-in-law took my wife and me to Smokehouse Barbecue for a meal. This was Friday evening and they appeared moderately busy. My son spent about a hundred bucks on the meal and left about $20 for a tip. We had finished our meal and were talking and finishing our drinks post meal, when a young lady, who was not our waitress came to our table, clearly nervous and apologetic, to inform us that her manager was placing a time restriction on tables and that we were being asked to leave. In all my years I've never had this happen to me, and quite frankly it was embarrassing. If they had time limits on tables then why not post a sign out front? Or why choose only our table, when the much larger table in the corner who had been seated as long as we had was unwrapping presents but not being asked to leave? It wasn't that we were asked but how it was done, very cowardly by the manager, and not evenly enforced. I'm a long time customer of Smokehouse, but I will not be back after this. Miss Manager, have the courage to do your own dirty work, and warn customers that you're going to enforce a policy like this. Thanks for tarnishing my Father's Day 2025! read more

Smokehouse BBQ on 39th in Independence was the worst smoked meat I have ever had and I called today to lodge my complaint--quite nicely I might add. The "manager on duty" took my call. I told her that the ribs were too tough and hard to eat and the brisket had no flavor. I added that if one has to rely on the sauce to make it flavorful then you all don't know how to smoke meat. We spent $100 on that garbage. I asked if I was missing something? maybe a bad smoke day? She said, "it sounds to me like you just don't like our meat"! No other words came out of her mouth except to explain they have had the same pit maters for years. No care of concern for the customer - AT ALL. Because of her snide attitude I told her that we will never dine there again. Next time I'll keep my $100 and smoke it myself--she said, and I quote, "Fine". read more
