Smoked On Main merchandise

Smoked On Main is a barbecue restaurant that opened in Wethersfield, Connecticut in September 2023. It was founded by Thomas Sapia. For over 20 years, Sapia has been the owner of Wethersfield-based Ascot Catering. The catering company's base of operations is in the circa-1898 Grange Hall building in Old Wethersfield. The historic building originally served as a meeting place and social center for local farmers and their families. Ascot previously opened a storefront location called Grange Fresh at this location in 2020. He decided to close it down a few years later and reopen with a new concept: barbecue! The new venture features several classic BBQ staples on the menu such as pulled pork, smoked sausage, brisket, ribs, mac-n-cheese, baked beans, and corn bread. My family and I recently stopped for dinner at Smoked On Main while we were in Old Wethersfield. We always try to stop in the area during the month of May to see the annual "Bicycles On Main" displays. While we were out walking, we started to get hungry. When we saw Smoked On Main, we thought that barbecue sounded like a nice option. The menu featured several tasty-sounding plates, so we decided to order a few different things and share them. We ended up getting some "Mac-N-Cheese", "BBQ Brisket Loaded Tater Tots", and "Smoked Flank Steak Tacos" (3 soft corn tortillas, pico de gallo, salsa verde and citrus slaw). Everything was really tasty and the staff were helpful and friendly. We really enjoyed our experience at Smoked On Main and we would definitely order from them again.

Pulled Pork (top) and Brisket

When Smoked On Main (SOM) was first opening maybe a few months ago, a friend who knows I follow new food spots messaged me. I think BBQ restaurants require a high degree of skill and experience, and I wanted to give SOM a chance to develop some muscle memory before I visited. Recently, I picked up takeout for my wife and I. While service was very friendly, and the inside was quite nice, our food experience was mixed. We ordered a two meat sampler with pulled pork and brisket, Street Corn Salad, Mac n Cheese, Cornbread and Turkey chili. We live about 15 minutes from SOM. Predictably, the food was not especially hot when we arrived home. I can't blame SOM for that, so I'll pretend everything was a perfect temperature. The Good I thought the pulled pork in the Kansas City sauce was tasty and had good texture. If I return, I'll probably order a Pulled Pork Sandwich. I also thought the cornbread was good. My wife said that she thinks it's the best she's had in the area. I wouldn't go that far, but it's better than at least one well known area place. The Less Good The Mac and Cheese, brisket and turkey chili were all decent, but I didn't really connect with them. The brisket had a bit of a wet texture and seemed like it may have been kept in au jus. That's not what I've seen at the best BBQ Brisket spots in places like Texas. I also didn't notice much of a smoke flavor. The turkey in the chili seemed pretty good, but the base of the chili didn't pop for me. The pasta texture was decent, but the cheese flavor and texture didn't stand out. Not a Fan Of The Street Corn Salad did not work for me. It didn't remind me of Street Corn, which I associate with Mexican Street corn. It had chopped red onions and mixed chopped peppers and a mild sauce that didn't have much presence. I'd feel better about it if they just called it Corn Salad. But either way, the mix of flavors was not interesting to me. It also doesn't help that one of the BBQ places in Hartford makes a fantastic off the cob Street Corn side. Overall, I can't say that Smoked on Main's food is better than average for BBQ at this point. They may still be growing though. I might visit again in a few months if I'm already in the area, but I prefer some other places that are about as close. 3 Stars

Brisket and Pork Belly Burnt ends with sides of Mac-N-Cheese and Street corn

I just stopped in as this restaurant opened this week. When you visit keep in mind you may have to park in one of the public lots and walk to the restaurant as it is street parking only and street parking in Old Wethersfield is limited! The staff was extremely friendly and made my ordering process easy! The menu is large and has all of the normal entrees and sides that you would expect at a barbecue restaurant. I went with the 2 meat combo and got the brisket as well as the pork belly burnt ends, There are a few sauces to choose from and I went with the KC BBQ sauce which was amazing. The quality of the meat was great and you can definitely tell that the meats are smoked in small batches. The flavor was great and the texture was also perfect with the meat having the right amount of moisture. The sides were where I was disappointed, I ordered the Mac-n-cheese as well as the street corn. The mac-n-cheese was not what I'd hoped it would be. For a barbecue restaurant I'd expect a hearty mac-n-cheese but unfortunately what I was given were a few noodles thrown on top of my meat in a styrofoam takeout container. The mac-n-cheese was not as hearty as I had hoped and was rather a few noodles coated in a thin cheese sauce. I also was not a fan of how it was presented on top of my meat. Compared to my side of street corn it seemed I received less mac-n-cheese. I'll attach a photo of my food! I was also a little disappointed in the street corn, I wasn't expecting the street corn to be served the way it was. The street corn was more of a cowboy caviar which was served cold and mixed with peppers and onions, it tasted good but was not what I was hoping for with my barbecue! I was expecting a warm style Mexican street corn. The street corn was served in a side dish container unlike the mac-n-cheese. All in all I am excited to have a barbecue place in town! The meat was amazing and I will definitely be back to try the other options. I know they are new and hopefully they can smooth out some of the wrinkles with the sides and the takeout order presentation. I'd also love to see them have a website that isn't just a facebook page. Hopefully even online ordering and curbside pickup one day too!

My expectations aren't super high, but I think the "ska club," "night at the Roxbury" music playing…read more that didn't fit the vibe might have something to do w/ it. There were 6 other people at the bar, a couple in the corner & a table if 6 behind me. The manager came out to talk to the couple in the corner about their experience, which is not a great sign, but we'll see. He saw that I was writing a review & never went back in the kitchen after that, unless it was for a brief moment. He involved himself in pouring drinks & barely left my side. He made small talk & I learned that he had been open for 4 years. It was difficult for me to eat, take pictures of the food or write the review with his constant engaging presence. He was pleasant & made sure to pick up the bartenders slack. For instance, a coaster under the drinks, offering me a glass, or putting down a placemats under the food or supplying silverware, none of which she did. I ordered a Modelo, but when she grabbed it out of the cooler, i saw that it was Especial not Negra, so i asked do you have the dark? She said no & w/ out hesitation opened it, not giving me a chance to ask for something different. Not a big deal, but she seemed indifferent & with no affect. None of this is a deal breaker, just an observation. The food, that was a deal breaker. I ordered the (smoked BBQ sandwich) & opted for the brisket. It came with a side & I chose onion rings. They were pre-salted, almost too much, but they were good. No complaints there. The sandwich however was impossible to eat. The meat was very tough & stringy. It was impossible to tear, bite or cut. The roll was soft, untoasted & soggy, causing it to fall apart making a mess. I gave up, turning to fork & knife to cut what resembled a tangled bunch of hair in both in taste & texture. There was something on the meat, but it was more of a marinade than BBQ as we know it. The same goes for the cheese. I did not see any caramelized onions, but there were two jalapeños. The owner asked how the meal was & I said eh. He said only ok? so I elaborated. He said he would relay the information to the kitchen & I thanked him. After that he never came back into the dining area until after I had left. I do feel bad writing this review because he was so overly involved in my experience & he was a nice gentleman that I would like to succeed, but I do not think I would want to return there after my experience with that sandwich, especially for the price. The meal alone was bad enough. Maybe a change in staff would help, unless they were related. I felt bad writing this review because the owner made it a point to be overly engaging with me once he saw that i was writing a review, but the better way to handle things is to make sure that you guest's experience is top notch. I felt like he tried to keep me engaged, so i wouldnt be rough on him, but it is supposed to be about the customers experience, not my empathy for the friendly owner. I wish him the best of luck.

It wasn't wine that I had too much of It was a double shot…read moreof my baby's love" (The Swinging Medallions) We had a Double Shot of fun at Smoke last night when we enjoyed a Dumpling Making/Prosecco Tasting Experience followed by a terrific dinner. Shout out to Smoke's owner Rich who dreamed up the Dumpling/Prosecco Experience for a dozen regulars and social media followers. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by Rich and a small split of Maschio Prosecco. After all the participants arrived, Rich's wife Claire and Claire's mom (the star of the show) walked us through the process of making homemade dumplings. Claire and her mom made the simple dough using just two ingredients -water and all-purpose flour. We watched our instructors mix the dough, stretch and roll into a thin rope, snap it off into small chunks, squish it into a disk, use a mini-rolling pin to flatten it out into a small circle, fill it from a pre-made bowl of Ground Beef and Cabbage, then fold and pinch it into shape. Then our dozen attendees tried their hand at replicating all of those steps. Our mother and daughter team's dumplings looked as though they came off a 3D printer- just perfect and uniform. Mine looked like rejected factory seconds. The mother didn't speak English, but I had a blast watching and copying her little tricks on folding in the corners and squeezing the wrappers together. Once the dumplings were folded and squeezed together, they went into a pot of water, and we all enjoyed them before dinner. Dinner was a real pleasure. I loved the vibe at Smoke. If you want to cool it hip and chic I won't argue. I loved all the paintings on the wall. There is a large painting of a ghostly looking, red-lipped female blowing out a puff of smoke. I told Rich what a cool painting it was, and he modestly said he had painted it. So not only is Rich a fun and engaging personality, and a talented painter, but the food at his restaurant is great. Our friend ordered a $15 Spicy Smoked Philly Cheesesteak with American Cheese, Peppers, Onions on a Grinder Roll with fries. I sampled a small slice, and it was terrific, and yeah -it was spicy. My wife ordered a $11 Shrimp and Roasted Corn Bisque served with pita chips, She loved it. I ordered a $10 Smoked Beef Brisket Chili served with tortilla chips. It was a big portion, full of flavorful chunks of beef, and packed just enough heat to make it perfect to my taste. Smoke offers a Sunday Brunch from 11-3 and a Happy Hour Mon-Sat 4pm-7pm. Their pricing is excellent, the vibe is super fun, the food is delicious, and the service from Rich and his staff is excellent. What a fun evening!

Weather was perfect and there was plenty of space for us; they told me that Thursday lunchtime was the best for a group. Most of us sat at one of the round booths with two eating outside. Most purchased their lunches from Small State Provisions with the Jambon Beurre the most ordered. Others inside had the Salmon Toast or Spicy Roast Beef. Outsiders ordered from Twin Beaks and had the Caesar Salad Fried Chicken Wrap. Everyone enjoyed what they had and all commented on the size of offerings and great price level. Cafē Pausa served most drink orders. They were amazed at the service and truly astounded that there was free water! Many commented they when they had family visitors at the retirement community they would ask to be taken there for lunch again. A very successful day which will be put on our schedule to come back as a group in some months to come. They all felt very welcome which is not always the reaction to a group of elders coming for a lunch date. PS: I brought back a chocolate chip cookie again as they are delectable and also got a Charcuterie Box to go which will be my meal tomorrow.

Service is a bit slower than some other West Indian places I've been to where they have all of the food cooked already and they just scoop it in as you order. My order took about 10-15 minutes with 1 person who has ordered ahead of me. He had about 3 orders. I suspect there is some fresh cooking done but I didn't watch too closely, as more customers were filling in. It's really a tiny hole in the wall with only 3 or 4 pizzeria style booths to sit in. There's about 3-4 parking spots and it's on a busy road. There's an ATM machine inside and 2 drink refrigerators. Behind the plexiglass partition, you can find the dessert du jour (today was 2 layer carrot cake Andy's chocolate cake) and the menu board. There aren't any prices on the menu any more. Probably having to constantly increase the price due to inflation. I can tell you that the large curry goat dinner was $16 and the large jerk chicken dinner was $15. Veggie Tarry juice drinks were $5 each. The glass bottle sodas were $2.50 and the Jamaican Beef Patties were $2.50. The two dinners came with rice and beans with tons of sauce on top, 2 pieces of fried sweet plantain, and a scoop of shredded veggies. Mostly cabbage in there. The food was enough for 5 meals. They really jam in the food in there. You can't fit anything else. The Jamaican Beef Patties looked too perfect to be homemade. They look exactly like the ones you get frozen from Tower Isle or Golden Krust. So at first I was disappointed that I was (possibly) getting a mass produced Beef patty. But I ate them for breakfast and OMG. Do not skip out on these! They quickly became my absolute favorite Beef patties ever. The filling wasn't as loose and greasy as the store bought ones. And not as much breadcrumb filler. The crust was heavenly perfect. The flakiness and the tender bite was scrumptious. Looking at the Yelp photos I see some all white meat chicken options and ribs!! What?! What to do?!?? Also if you're a Trini looking for hot pepper sauce- nothing to see here. All they have are hot sauce packets. The sauce inside is nothing hotter than Tabasco. And similar consistency. Please God, Bless Carl and his family and kitchen staff. I wish this place was closer to me. Best $50 spent on a meal in a long time!!
