We scheduled an appointment for them to come and replace our chimney cap. No one ever came or even bothered to call. When we called and asked what's happening we were told they made a mistake on the schedule and can't come for another week and a half. Awful service and communication. I have an old Lennox gas fireplace -- took 10 to 20 minutes to light, so I called Smokestacks. Austin showed up the following week, checked it out, told me the whole fireplace needed to be replaced, and ballparked a $14K price tag. i asked about the price for parts alone, and couldn't get a straight answer -- was told that dealers don't list prices, and that they couldn't give an estimate until I picked out a replacement, which didn't sound kosher to me. I wasn't comfortable about the advice, so I had Pratt Chimney check it out a couple of weeks later --turns out it just needed a new pilot light assembly, for about $500 bucks, labor included. Also got a quote the same day from Pratt on a comparable new gas fireplace -- $7K, including labor, and they named their preferred replacement brand and model, and explained why they recommended it. The price was in line with what two other homeowners had told me, and the evaluation of the problem made sense. I don't know anything about fireplaces, but I know enough to always get at least two quotes for any work I need done. I don't know whether Smokestacks made a careless mistake or just evaluated things differently. I called them and got a call back from their President, and he assured me that their assessment was reasonable and their quote for replacement was consistent with similar work they've done in the past. But I can't do business if I can't get (1) options for repair instead of replacement, (2) a definite price for parts, and (3) an estimate for work more or less in line with work by other contractors. read more

We have had Smoke Stacks look at our chimneys at both of our houses. They did a chimney sweep for one and said the other was fine and said they didn't need to sweep it. They are very thorough and provide good information on how to care for the chimney. Pricing is affordable as well. Book ahead of time as they are scheduling way out. read more

5 stars really aren't enough to give this company. It is so refreshing to have someone come out, inspect your fireplace, fix something and give you complete honesty. After looking at my chimney he told me that it really didn't need a cleaning and gave me some great advice on what to do down the road. We contacted Kurt to inspect and clean our wood burning fireplace. We had just bought our house so knew very little about this type of fireplace and how to take care if it. Kurt was super quick to respond to our request and when he came out to see us he was on time, which I really appreciated. Kurt did a full inspection and in the end actually told us we didn't need the chimney cleaned at this time. So instead of just doing that work and charging us for it, he spent his time educating us about how to maintain it and what to look out for. He also advised us on how frequently we should get the chimney cleaned - really appreciate that and as I said to him, this all gave me peace of mind about using it. I bought my house this time last year. I hadnt paid attention to the fireplace because of other projects and wasnt sure what was working and not working because the flew wouldnt close I know its a lousy time to have the chimney cleaned, however I really wanted to be able to use it this winter. Kurt came out for the inspection and maybe cleaning. He was prompt, amiable and very knowledgeable. Turns out I didn't need it cleaned, but should have it replaced in the nearer future. I recently bought a house and have never had a natural fireplace before. I called Kurt from Smoke Stacks and set up a time to make sure my chimney was clean and the fireplace was safe to use. Kurt showed up on time, was professional, and extremely helpful. He came in and looked at my fireplace and chimney and within minutes said that it was clean, and there was no need to do a deeper inspection. He even took the time to explain how to use the natural fireplace and safety tips and how-to's. Kurt came to the houses and gave an estimate which outlined several options and prices. He explained them well. They were extremely competitive and for some options several thousand dollars cheaper than other's estimates. Heard great things about this company. Hired him and signed the contract of which he signed and sent back. The day before he was to come to our house, I called and asked when we are picking out the brick colors. He said he is not coming because he would lose money on the job because he mis quoted it. I offered to split the difference and he said no. Even though he signed the contract. If he makes a mistake, he does not honor his agreement. From what I know, he does good work but very poor business practices. His prices were not the cheapest but not the most either This happened and I'm surprised you did not remember. I made a complaint to Angie's list about what happened and you had it taken down. I thought Angie's list was unbiased except if you advertise with them. I even contacted mr fix it and he advised to take legal action until he heard it was you. He said you two were friends.
