I'm always on the lookout for good BBQ, and it's nice that in Hawaii we are getting more and more options. So when I was in Kihei not too long ago, I settled on this joint. The wagon shares a lot with a seafood place and what I think was a shave ice stand. There was plenty of off-street parking. It was a blazing hot day, made worse by pavement and a lack of shade or much greenery. You have to walk over some gravel to place and get your order. The window of the truck is very high; I could barely reach it. They do take credit cards. The owner is nice and chatty, and was busy flirting with the young women in line in front of me. Since I never know if I'll be back to a BBQ place, I always go for a sampler plate. The three meat option set me back $25, but the portions were generous and could easily feed two, or maybe even three if their appetites were light. I don't care for coleslaw, so I asked for a double heap of potato salad. But my request was forgotten and I ended up with coleslaw anyway. I was told I could change it, but I didn't want to waste food. The owner said it was pineapple coleslaw and that people who didn't like coleslaw liked it. (I didn't care for it.) There were some tables and chairs but no umbrellas or shade. I was told the unbrellas kept getting blown away or stolen. I didnt want to eat in the car so I sat at one of the tables and hoped for a breeze. The meats I chose were brisket, chicken, and pork ribs. The brisket was best, soft with a nice smoke ring. I tried the house-made BBQ sauce; it was the thin and vinegary type. It was okay, but mostly I went without it. The chicken is usually my favorite, but it came in second here, being a little on the dry side. The biggest disappointment was the pork ribs. The meat was really tough and had to be dragged away, kicking and screaming, from the bone. (It should fall right off.) I liked the potato salad. If I ever go back here, I'll just order a half-pound or pound of brisket by itself. read more

Little Donnie & I showed up today for some flesh. No not Stormy Daniels flesh but some BBQ flesh. So I waited for days through Hurricane Lane to show for da grindz. However Little Donnie & I were disappointed with the net results. I ordered a two meat platter of brisket & sausage which came with the fixings of coleslaw, potato salad & beans. Potato salad was like Mom made back in the day to cheers to the chef on that but the rest was ok. Here's my issues with the meats. Cold and looked and tasted like it had been reheated for serving. Brisket didn't have the oozing of rendered down fat like most brisket fresh off an 18 hour smoke. I'm been all o sr Texas and every quality smoked brisket oozes with fat when it's served. This defiantly was sitting either overnight or chilled from day before... As for the sausage well it was like warm but has huge potential if he can serve it hot. Not much else to say cause anyone knowing the pleasure of smokes meat will get what I'm saying. Now I honestly think you have potential on your product, yet with the standards set by The Lone Star State you better believe I measure all BBQ by that standard. I wanted to try a different cuisine from what we have been eating on this trip so I thought I would stop by the local BBQ. By the reviews I had really high expectations, but this place failed to meet those standards. I ordered the three meat combo ribs - were extremely bland (my husband said that I probably didn't like them because there were not Texas ribs, and he was probably right), brisket - fatty and unflavorful, and pulled pork - didn't live to Hawaiian standards. Today, I finally made it for lunch here. Service: I was welcomed and served by Chef John at the lunch trailer counter. He was very attentive and friendly. Grindz: I ordered their BBQ brisket and sides plate lunch. Awe so delicious and tender the brisket. Reminded me of Rudy's BBQ in Austin, TX. The pineapple coleslaw was actually good. It worked out with the flavors blending great. Props for Chef John being adventurous and putting an island touch. The pinto beans were winners. It really brought me back to Texas. All I can say it is Tejano style perfection. And all side ARE made fresh. In closing: I'm a big fan of BBQ Brisket when it is executed properly. This is the place. I stopped by here earlier today with my wife for our lunch. We were on the lookout for Huli Huli chicken but didn't see any and so instead went with the next best thing, BBQ. Smoke and Spice BBQ is located right across Alahele Pl from the Kihei Kalama village and is a giant red food truck. You may actually smell it before you end up seeing it. For lunch on this occasion my wife and I decided to split a 2 meat combo and chose the brisket and chicken for our meats. This also came with some potato salad, pineapple Cole slaw, baked beans and BBQ sauce. I first started with the potato salad which I would consider ok. It had quite large pieces of potatoes in it with some crunchy celery and a creamy sauce. Next up for me was the pineapple Cole slaw which was as awesome as it sounds. It was definitely a creamier Cole slaw and the pineapple gave it some great sweetness. Finally after trying those I got into the meats of which the brisket was clearly the star. Both were tender and you could taste the smoke flavor. What made the brisket better in my opinion was the rub on it while I didn't care so much for the chicken skin which is where the rub was. Last but certainly not least were the baked beans. Since I generally don't like baked beans I am not surprised that I thought these were just ok. What I did appreciate about them was that they had real pieces of meat in them. The bottom line for me is that I would stop by here again in the future. While certainly not cheap (what meat is on the island?) it isn't expensive either and I really enjoyed their brisket. read more

This place has potential, but it misses the mark. Came at around 5:30pm and got a ribs and sausage combo, along with a chicken plate. All three meats had excellent flavor, with a beautiful smokey flavor. Coleslaw had a nice touch of pineapple that made it stand out from your run of the mill coleslaw. Beans - pretty average Potato salad - pretty bland. Swap it out with Costco potato salad and no one would be able to tell the difference. Where the meal fell short is that all three meats were dry. I suspect that the food is cooked for lunchtime service and reheated for dinner. My advice: come for lunch, not for dinner. read more

Do not write this place off because of my review! This central Texas BBQ truck has the potential to be amazing (please take this review with a grain of salt. I live in central Texas, I'm spoiled by the best Texas BBQ, and EVERY BBQ joint deserves 3 tries and I've only been to this truck once). The flavor in the ribs and brisket was there, but I honestly think the meat is being over-cooked post-smoke in the warmer. Every single piece of meat was dry - the sausage was ruined. If you show up at 11am, I bet this is the best BBQ west of Driftwood, TX, but by 1pm, flavor has been cooked out. Something as simple as turning down some temps and wrapping the meat in peach paper in the warmer could make a huge difference. The beans were amazing and the pineapple slaw should be a thing in the mainland. The kiawe gives the brisket fat a great flavor, and the ribs still came right off the bone. But again, everything was dry. Maui has become a place where I will visit many times in the future and I will absolutely visit Smoke & Spice again. read more

Brisket and pulled pork are smoky and tender and the rib on the brisket is very flavorful. In case you're wondering if a BBQ place in Maui in Kihei is going to have the quality that'd you'd find in Austin, for example, this one sure does have the quality and flavor like good Texas style BBQ. Brisket can be really hit and miss. The best I've had is from Austin and also had some very good ones in GA and TN. This one stands its ground with the best ones. Went here yesterday as the wife wanted tacos from the truck next door. The owner is a pleasant nice guy who is happy to give you a sample before you decide. I went with a beef brisket platter with salad beans and the smoked chicken and beef brisket. Total damage 20 dollars. Well worth it. The beef brisket is juicy, flavourful, and has just the right amount of fat to really enhance the flavour. The sauce that comes with it is delicious. He puts a nice kosher salt on it which is great. The chicken had a nice smokey taste but for me the brisket was definitely the highlight. The beans were good, tasted home style, not sweetened which I prefer. We came to maui last year and found this truck at the kihei fourth Friday event - it was the best meal we had during our entire stay. We had it a couple more times while on the island - just as good every time. We booked another trip for Feb '19 and talked about how we couldn't wait for more. First off I'm not a slaw guy, but the pineapple slaw was absolutely amazing, the right combo of sweetness. The pork was good and the brisket was even better.
