My sister told me to try this out, from York. For a cheesesteak. York cheese steaks seemed to have take a horrible turn for the worse. I've been gone for many years and was having horrible luck getting a good cheese steak, so she sent me across the river. Just picked up 2 cheesesteaks. Small and large...$25 carry out. Signed card transaction receipt and asked since when do we tip on carry out. (Not the 1st establishment)? She may have been 16. Said well its because we work so hard. And behind the bay Marie I saw a "it". Long hair a mustache and lipstick making smiths carry out. Just a quick stop for a bite. Friendly service. We got fries and drinks. Fries were good. What gets me is it's just work out and a little dirty looking. I've read a lot of these reviews and I find them amusing. Smith's is a neighborhood bar and take out joint. Service isn't going to be their strong point. We've had no less than 50 takeout orders and never have had an issue. The cheesesteaks are the specialty of the house and they are really very good. Everything else is pretty ordinary. Stopped eating at Smith's years ago, I would get sick every time I ordered a sub. Decided to try ordering a steak sandwich and sit on the deck after five years. I ordered the steak sandwich without onions and sauce on the side. The sandwich gave with onions but, it did have the sauce on the side. The steak sandwich was the worst I have ever had! Over cooked, dry, no taste and the sauce tasted like tomato out of the can. I could not finish a small. Unfortunately the food has done down hill over the years, that is too bad. Unsure why this place gets good reviews. The person taking our order over the phone was surly. the cheesesteak tasted like the meat had been boiled - no flavor, no caramelization - just bland. The worst part was the meatball sub - the meatballs were cafeteria-grade at best, and there was a pile of mostly un-melted shredded cheese under the meatballs. No effort had been made to even melt the cheese. There are so many local places for good and inexpensive subs. Caruso's is my top recommendation, but I'd also try Daryls twisted cheesesteak at Griddles. Trust me - anywhere is going to be better than this place. read more

I'll start by saying that I have been a long term customer of Smith's. I will not be anymore. We have the entire family together (11 people) and had a fairly large order. With that a sub was made incorrectly and we were given a fry instead of a fried mushroom. No big deal. We called and mentioned the errors and said we will come back to get the correct food. They were very reluctant to remake the sub and refused to give us a fried mushroom ("Well you were given something"). If you're in Columbia you have to stop by Smiths and get a cheese steak. They're famous around these parts! They don't know I'm a good credit but I've never been disappointed! Some places I like to lay low. The prices are great and the food portions are always above average! No where in Columbia can compete in my opinion. I've sadly not tried their chicken cheese steak yet :( it's next on my list. You should know if you seen any of my reviews I live love chicken lol. I've also never stopped inside or spent the night. I bet it would be a cozy stay. I always do their speedy take out. Lots of people like to eat out on there deck and/or just stop in for a nice cold one. It's a bar with tables and booths on the other side. It was pleasantly noisy, as a bar would be. They also have a deck for al fresco dining. Wait staff was happy and nice. Adequately efficient. Years ago this was a favorite for my family. However, about 3 or 4 years ago they changed something about their cheesesteaks and now they aren't very good anymore. Along with that we have placed many pick up orders over the years and not one time did they get our complete order correct. I stopped giving them my business, however my husband still likes the food and occasionally I give in? and every time they mess up the order. Verdict: Mixed lot and mixed luck with Smith's Hotel. You'll get a decent amount of food for your dollar at Smith's Hotel. Neither my cheesesteaks nor chicken cheesesteaks have blown me away but they gave me a filling meal with a medium. The challenge we've experienced with Smith's is organization, speed, and accuracy when they're in a rush. Heavy business times (like halftime of an Eagles game) can mean a lot of orders coming in. The kitchen has struggled to get our orders of about 6 sandwiches out the door. Even more so, they've struggled getting exactly what we ordered out the door. We might end up with something being added or omitted from the sandwich or it could be an unexpected type of sandwich all together. Maybe someone else got ours. It's hard to say. Got my steaks with provolone, sauce, and onions. The bread can get soggy with a takeout order so be prepared with napkins. A few minutes in an oven or toaster oven would be even better. For a small, hole in the wall take out restaurant, this was a happening spot. With the amount of foot traffic I witnessed while waiting for 5 subs to be made, the front door might as well been a revolving door. For the price, I can understand why. Their large subs are about 18 to 20 inches and range from $7-$8 depending on what you get. The quality may not be the greatest(everything is frozen/pre-packaged), but you get what you pay for along with quick service. My dad and I do enjoy the cheeseburger sub. We usually split the large and always have left overs. My mother was obsessed with their tuna sub until I got her a fish sub to try. I am not going to lie, it was pretty tasty. The haddock was nice and crispy. I had to steal a few bites from her when she wasn't looking......after she gave me a piece of her sub. The Italian sub could be better. It lacked flavor and tasted more like a ham sub instead. You can also buy beer to go 40's to 12packs. Even though the door says they accept master card/visa, they really only accept cash.
