They do may other custom or limited designs throughout the year to keep the cookies fun and seasonal. The frosting is SO good, so sometimes I choose my cookie based off which design uses the most frosting. lol Their pink champagne cake is legendary and a must for anyone hoping to get the full Smith's experience. This is their main location off Union, and is where the magic happens. Smith's has spoiled us by expanding where we can find their cookies such as Sully's gas stations, but I always love when I can come to the main location to soak in the nostalgia. On my most recent visit, 2 lovely ladies helped me out and were kind enough to tell me fun facts about the history of the business. This place is clean, organized, and has a lot of options. However, they do sell out FAST! You have to go early specially on a Saturday. They barely make my fave coconut macaroons which is kinda sad. The ones I've gotten so far are delicious and very tasty. However, customer service can be improved. Most of the time, they aren't nice or welcoming. Overall great experience! Each of the staff were willing to help us as we were looking at all the selections. Went around 1pm and they had plenty available. The lady who helped us helped answer all my wife's questions and even gave us extra information on some which helped her pick out what she wanted to try. The donuts here tasted greaatttt! Even just a simple glazed donut was good here! But my Christmas experience was so jaw-dropping, I will never return. I was born here & have had Smith's holiday pies all my life. But, I'm done with them. Now, my holiday pies will be from Marie Callender's. Their pies are fantastic & their staff is gracious & respectful. A few weeks before Christmas I called Smith's on Union to order my family's usual two pies & rolls. I was asked when I needed them & said I'd like to pick them up on Christmas Eve. The woman replied, "Well, you called too early! Call back Monday, the 22nd, for a Christmas Eve pickup. Not before!" Rude. So Monday, the 22nd, I phoned around 7:30 a.m. to place my order. I was told, "ORDERS ARE CLOSED! WE STOPPED TAKING ORDERS SATURDAY!" I was stunned at her rudeness & the disorganization of this business. I told her this was the date I was given to call. She said, " WELL, SHE TOLD YOU WRONG!" No apology, just disconnected the phone. read more

I have never had a bad experience at Smith's Bakery. I've been frequenting this business for more than 50 years and I have never had a negative encounter in any of their shops. Their baked goods are beyond delicious and I believe their cleanliness standards are above reproach.If I had to pick one thing to recommend, could not do it. I would narrow it down to two items, their iced sugar cookies and their chocolate champagne cake. Those are my two favorite items on their menu! These ladies work their butts off. Joyce is my favorite and she is always happy to help, is very sweet and just all around a pleasant woman. When I come in half asleep and sometimes grumpy she makes me smile. Even when the grouch of an owner barks at them they all remain calm. Every holiday was a time for decorated sugar cookies and they also made most of my birthday cakes ( ballerina one at age 5 was my favorite!) and my graduation cake. When my Mother was close to the end of her life one of the best surprises I brought her to the nursing home was a pink and white champagne cake, which had always been her favorite. After our discussion, I have decided to change my review from a 3-star rating to a 5-star rating and admit that I made a mistake. The reason why the person on the phone had no idea what I was asking for is that I need to remember to ask for "special order" to get the champagne bunny cake. Smith's bakes a coconut bunny cake that is similar but should not be confused with the champagne cake. A " must stop". Their baked goods are all terrific. The highlight for my family are their sugar cookies . It has always been fun to choose the perfect cookies for the day . I now live some distance away but still make my cookie pilgrimage to Smith's for holidays and family gatherings. I always go to the main shop in old Bakersfield. The baking is done there and they never run out. Not much parking but always find a spot. Be patient with the staff. A local spot in town, which has been a relevant bakery for decades and I believe will be a relevant bakery for decades to come. They have a very small selection of baked goods at all of their locations, but they have definitely perfected a lot of these. My favorite is their red cinnamon cookies and their jelly filled donuts. My only issue with this place is they have opened multiple smaller locations in multiple higher end stores and gas stations, but their prices have significantly gone up over the past decade. Doesn't mean we don't enjoy their good, it would just be nice to not have to spend over a dollar for one deliciously made cookie. If I could give a 4.95 star I would. Thank you Smiths. Annually, we have a Smith's Champagne cake for a family exclusive special occasion. For YEARS we've done this, without problems. This year's cake was the definite exception and game changer, as it was incorrectly personalized (icing inscription) - okay, human error, understandable, but it was the attitude and tone given upon pickup and disclosure of the error that really soured our good faith. Immediately there was a dismissive, sorry not sorry, "there's nothing I can do because I can't mix the icing to redo it" . THAT raised so many questions and implications but maturity moves beyond that and moreso into wanting to RESOLVE this. Another employee stepped in and was apologetic in tone but could not fix the cake. We were offered cookies in consolation. Smiths cookies are great but it was THE messed up CAKE that was to be presented to friends and family, at an event, a few hours later - NOT FIVE COOKIES. Loss of good faith. Again, it's not so much about the mistake as it was the dismissive tone and downplaying. read more
