Sunshine & Lollipops in Cookie Form! What a lovely surprise to start the morning! A colleague secretly passed out cookies to our staff, and this unexpected sweet treat was such a fun way to brighten everyone's day. The sugar cookie from Smith Bakeries was the perfect combination of soft and chewy, with just a light hint of lemon that made each bite feel fresh and happy. It was the kind of cookie that instantly puts you in a better mood: sunshine and lollipops in my mouth happiness! Sometimes the smallest surprises make the biggest impact, and this cookie definitely delivered a little morning joy. read more

It was worth a trip across town to visit Smiths Bakery for a half dozen of their finest. I beat the morning 8 o'clock crowd, The sweet bakery aroma takes over when you enter. Just 2 in front of me, it gave me time to think back how many times I'd been here you over the years. Not much has changed signs pictures mostly still same which is fine. The 2 pot commercial coffee maker with the dry creamer all brings back memories I poured myself a cup for my ride back home. Even the 2 friendly ladies taking your orders are here. All the delicious pastries, breads and cakes in the display case thankfully are still the same as well. I noticed lots of graduation cookies. Smith's are "Thee Bakers of Bakersfield" always have been and always will be. I left with a half dozen arrived back home with 5.My wife was really surprised good way for me to start her day. With over 80 years of delicious baked goods, Smith's Bakeries has earned the title of bona fide Bakersfield classic. I'm a sucker for their smiley face sugar cookies and thumbprints. They do may other custom or limited designs throughout the year to keep the cookies fun and seasonal. The frosting is SO good, so sometimes I choose my cookie based off which design uses the most frosting. lol Their pink champagne cake is legendary and a must for anyone hoping to get the full Smith's experience. This is their main location off Union, and is where the magic happens. Smith's has spoiled us by expanding where we can find their cookies such as Sully's gas stations, but I always love when I can come to the main location to soak in the nostalgia. On my most recent visit, 2 lovely ladies helped me out and were kind enough to tell me fun facts about the history of the business. I had such a great time hearing about the hard work which goes in behind the scenes and fun anecdotes. It's always a great time at Smith's. Like I've said before, "I'm not sure who is smiling more. Me, or the cookie" read more

This place is clean, organized, and has a lot of options. However, they do sell out FAST! You have to go early specially on a Saturday. They barely make my fave coconut macaroons which is kinda sad. The ones I've gotten so far are delicious and very tasty. However, customer service can be improved. Most of the time, they aren't nice or welcoming. I still keep coming back because they do have good stuff. Just not their customer service so beware! read more

I was originally just looking for a Starbucks and stumbled across this bakery by accident. Since I'm not from the area, I was simply hoping to grab a plain cup of coffee--nothing fancy, just something familiar. Walking in was such a pleasant surprise. The bakery has a charming, old-fashioned feel, with displays full of donuts, pastries, and danishes. It immediately brought me back to my childhood, and I couldn't resist picking up a handful of treats. Not only did I get my simple cup of coffee, but I also got to enjoy a warm, nostalgic experience I wasn't expecting. So glad I stopped in--definitely worth it! read more

The lady with the curly hair, glasses, and white wrist watch was not the nicest. In fact, she was rude over the phone, and abrasive the minute I walked into the store. Customer service was not good. They're rude and seem reluctant to help their customers even though we just spent $150 there, so I'd assume they would appreciate our business. My overall point is this: the experience was stressful, it was a hassle trying to make the order because curly haired wrist watch lady was having a fit that we ordered a few dozen cookies and donuts over the phone for that day. Pastries that were already MADE - the only thing that required any physical effort, was putting them into a box. We had to call them to place the order because we were in a hurry, but apparently if you call them to place an order IT BETTER BE DAYS IN ADVANCE - otherwise you can't order - it needs to be ordered in person. Are you confused yet? Good because it's a stupid policy and doesn't make any sense. THIS IS NOT A ONE TIME EXPERIENCE FOR PEOPLE - IT'S A CONSTANT THEME read more

Awsome and professional, i recommend this spot for and bakery need or ocasiones..tasty, clean environment and friendly staff.

Great hometown feel bakery! We tried the cupcakes, cream puffs, pinch cookies, brownies, and eclairs! Everything was good and tasted freshly baked/made. We will definitely be back when we are in the area. Wish we had one of these closer to us! read more

Overall great experience! Each of the staff were willing to help us as we were looking at all the selections. Went around 1pm and they had plenty available. The lady who helped us helped answer all my wife's questions and even gave us extra information on some which helped her pick out what she wanted to try. The donuts here tasted greaatttt! Even just a simple glazed donut was good here! We bought half a dozen Halloween cookies that we have yet to try but I don't think I'll be disappointed considering that the donuts were pretty good as well. I would recommend this place! read more

Smith's Bakeries - Fruit tarts that are made on Thursdays and a walnut brownie - Donuts Near Me - Bakersfield, California

Smith's Bakery on Union in Bakersfield has always had atrocious service. They're brisk and treat customers like they're interrupting their coffee break. But my Christmas experience was so jaw-dropping, I will never return. I was born here & have had Smith's holiday pies all my life. But, I'm done with them. Now, my holiday pies will be from Marie Callender's. Their pies are fantastic & their staff is gracious & respectful. A few weeks before Christmas I called Smith's on Union to order my family's usual two pies & rolls. I was asked when I needed them & said I'd like to pick them up on Christmas Eve. The woman replied, "Well, you called too early! Call back Monday, the 22nd, for a Christmas Eve pickup. Not before!" Rude. So Monday, the 22nd, I phoned around 7:30 a.m. to place my order. I was told, "ORDERS ARE CLOSED! WE STOPPED TAKING ORDERS SATURDAY!" I was stunned at her rudeness & the disorganization of this business. I told her this was the date I was given to call. She said, " WELL, SHE TOLD YOU WRONG!" No apology, just disconnected the phone. read more

Freshly baked, I got to enjoy my cinnamon bun at 5:30 am. For an early bird like me, it's never too soon or too fresh. Apparently, there are quite many early birds. Even before I arrived at 5:15 am, another car had already been waiting in the tiny parking lot. read more

Smith's Bakery has been a huge part in celebrations in my life since the 1960's. Every holiday was a time for decorated sugar cookies and they also made most of my birthday cakes ( ballerina one at age 5 was my favorite!) and my graduation cake. When my Mother was close to the end of her life one of the best surprises I brought her to the nursing home was a pink and white champagne cake, which had always been her favorite. I no longer live in Bakersfield but have to visit Smith's every time i travel to or through town. It's one of my favorite childhood memories and has continued its wonderful concoctions and service through the years! read more

I have never had a bad experience at Smith's Bakery. I've been frequenting this business for more than 50 years and I have never had a negative encounter in any of their shops. Their baked goods are beyond delicious and I believe their cleanliness standards are above reproach. If I had to pick one thing to recommend, could not do it. I would narrow it down to two items, their iced sugar cookies and their chocolate champagne cake. Those are my two favorite items on their menu! I hope I can have some of those goodies during my last days on earth. Whenever I go into Smith's the ladies (and occasionally a gentleman)are always kind and helpful and patient. read more

These ladies work their butts off. Joyce is my favorite and she is always happy to help, is very sweet and just all around a pleasant woman. When I come in half asleep and sometimes grumpy she makes me smile. Even when the grouch of an owner barks at them they all remain calm. I had to stick up for them when the heifers come in with their screaming kids and they start being a handful and rude. The greatest group of gals and their energy is beyond enlightening. read more

UPDATE: I had a conversation with both Jill from Atascadero through a text message and Jacqueline from the Bakersfield Union Avenue Smith's Bakery regarding my concern over the champagne bunny cake. After our discussion, I have decided to change my review from a 3-star rating to a 5-star rating and admit that I made a mistake. The reason why the person on the phone had no idea what I was asking for is that I need to remember to ask for "special order" to get the champagne bunny cake. Smith's bakes a coconut bunny cake that is similar but should not be confused with the champagne cake. Original Review: From my earliest memories, Smith's Bakery has held a very special place in my heart. Situated on Union Ave, the bakery is renowned for its mouth-watering brownies that are simply irresistible. For more than two decades, I've been a loyal customer of this charming little bakery, bringing my grandchildren here to enjoy the bakery's pink donuts and other sweet treats. However, Smith's Bakery means much more to my family than just a place to indulge in delicious desserts. It has become a cherished tradition for us to buy a pink champagne cake from the bakery every year to celebrate my daughter's birthday. And not just any cake - we always get the one that's decorated with "Happy Birthday" and her name. This cake has become a staple item at our family gatherings, and it's hard to imagine a celebration without it. One of my fondest memories of Smith's Bakery is from when my daughter was younger. Her birthday falls around Easter, and every year, Smith's Bakery used to make a Pink Champagne cake shaped like a rabbit out of a loaf pan. It was a delightful surprise for my daughter, and she loved it so much that we started buying both the Pink Champagne Bunny cake and the Pink Champagne sheet cake for her birthday celebration. But this year, when I called the bakery to order the Pink Champagne Bunny cake, the lady on the phone had no idea what I was talking about. I was disappointed and confused, and it made me wonder if the bakery had changed ownership or if they had stopped making the cake altogether. During our conversation, the Bakery representative requested my phone number and promised that someone would call me back. However, despite her promise, I have not received any response from their end yet. I had a good experience, but the lack of response has left me with mixed feelings. I'm giving them a 3-star review. read more

I saw on the website that this location opens at 5:30 am, I show up early because I have work at 6:00 am. I waited in my car for a while because I know they probably still have to set up but 15 mins after waiting in my car and outside their front door even after an employee saw me outside they still didn't open their doors for service for me and two other potential customer, I probably won't be returning. read more

A local spot in town, which has been a relevant bakery for decades and I believe will be a relevant bakery for decades to come. They have a very small selection of baked goods at all of their locations, but they have definitely perfected a lot of these. My favorite is their red cinnamon cookies and their jelly filled donuts. My only issue with this place is they have opened multiple smaller locations in multiple higher end stores and gas stations, but their prices have significantly gone up over the past decade. Doesn't mean we don't enjoy their good, it would just be nice to not have to spend over a dollar for one deliciously made cookie. If I could give a 4.95 star I would. Thank you Smiths. Keepin it sweet since 1945. read more
