It was worth a trip across town to visit Smiths Bakery for a half dozen of their finest. I beat the morning 8 o'clock crowd, The sweet bakery aroma takes over when you enter. Just 2 in front of me, it gave me time to think back how many times I'd been here you over the years. Not much has changed signs pictures mostly still same which is fine. The 2 pot commercial coffee maker with the dry creamer all brings back memories I poured myself a cup for my ride back home. Even the 2 friendly ladies taking your orders are here. All the delicious pastries, breads and cakes in the display case thankfully are still the same as well. I noticed lots of graduation cookies. With over 80 years of delicious baked goods, Smith's Bakeries has earned the title of bona fide Bakersfield classic. I'm a sucker for their smiley face sugar cookies and thumbprints. They do may other custom or limited designs throughout the year to keep the cookies fun and seasonal. The frosting is SO good, so sometimes I choose my cookie based off which design uses the most frosting. lol Their pink champagne cake is legendary and a must for anyone hoping to get the full Smith's experience. This is their main location off Union, and is where the magic happens. Smith's has spoiled us by expanding where we can find their cookies such as Sully's gas stations, but I always love when I can come to the main location to soak in the nostalgia. On my most recent visit, 2 lovely ladies helped me out and were kind enough to tell me fun facts about the history of the business. The lady with the curly hair, glasses, and white wrist watch was not the nicest. In fact, she was rude over the phone, and abrasive the minute I walked into the store. Customer service was not good. They're rude and seem reluctant to help their customers even though we just spent $150 there, so I'd assume they would appreciate our business. My overall point is this: the experience was stressful, it was a hassle trying to make the order because curly haired wrist watch lady was having a fit that we ordered a few dozen cookies and donuts over the phone for that day. Pastries that were already MADE - the only thing that required any physical effort, was putting them into a box. This place is clean, organized, and has a lot of options. However, they do sell out FAST! You have to go early specially on a Saturday. They barely make my fave coconut macaroons which is kinda sad. Overall great experience! Each of the staff were willing to help us as we were looking at all the selections. Went around 1pm and they had plenty available. The lady who helped us helped answer all my wife's questions and even gave us extra information on some which helped her pick out what she wanted to try. The donuts here tasted greaatttt! But my Christmas experience was so jaw-dropping, I will never return. I was born here & have had Smith's holiday pies all my life. But, I'm done with them. Now, my holiday pies will be from Marie Callender's. Their pies are fantastic & their staff is gracious & respectful. A few weeks before Christmas I called Smith's on Union to order my family's usual two pies & rolls. I was asked when I needed them & said I'd like to pick them up on Christmas Eve. The woman replied, "Well, you called too early! Call back Monday, the 22nd, for a Christmas Eve pickup. Not before!" Rude. So Monday, the 22nd, I phoned around 7:30 a.m. to place my order. Every holiday was a time for decorated sugar cookies and they also made most of my birthday cakes ( ballerina one at age 5 was my favorite!) and my graduation cake. When my Mother was close to the end of her life one of the best surprises I brought her to the nursing home was a pink and white champagne cake, which had always been her favorite. When I come in half asleep and sometimes grumpy she makes me smile. Even when the grouch of an owner barks at them they all remain calm. They have a very small selection of baked goods at all of their locations, but they have definitely perfected a lot of these. My favorite is their red cinnamon cookies and their jelly filled donuts. My only issue with this place is they have opened multiple smaller locations in multiple higher end stores and gas stations, but their prices have significantly gone up over the past decade.
