I would not waste your time preordering. We preordered because we were told there was a separate line for preorders and it goes pretty quick..... Well you're just going to wait in the same long line with everyone else who want to just browse around. Showed up this morning and we had to wait in 34 degree weather while the workers are letting people wander around moving extremely slow. The "preorder" table is just a pushed up table against the door to keep people from coming in. No one there. No signage directing you. Don't waste your time. Grandma's favorite! It's all about the berry pie. Well, last time I picked up some cookies too. Life is to short to worry about diabetes or sugar. Well the area (parking lot) is crusty but no one bothers you. Service is acceptable but frankly, grandma, knows everyone so we let her cut the deals. We just eat the Berry pie. I went to the Sulleys on Olive. I got a pre pack of three cookies that were there. My daughter open the package and got a cookie to eat on the way home. She noticed a hair thought maybe her hair fell in package but the hair was in the cookie.. it totally grossed us out. I have never had any kind of thing happen to us. We love Smiths. Passing through Bakersfield for a couple days to visit family, I saw this bakery close to their home and decided to give them a try. With Covid restrictions, they allow three people in at a time and require masks. They had donuts, croissants, pies, and cookies. I can't say much for their other pastries, as I came in craving holiday cookies just like my childhood, Christmas themed sugar cookies. The sugar cookies at Smith's did not disappoint! They had a few different holiday options to choose from and some regular ones too. I was told that they are all flavored the same, just different designs. So I opted for five, three Christmas wreaths, a Rudolph Christmas pig, and a Santa Claus. These cookies were really yummy, with a good amount of frosting and they were super soft. Definitely satisfied my sweet tooth. Friendly and efficient service. If I'm ever back in town, I wouldn't mind trying some of their other offerings on display. read more

Normally the staff is very friendly and eager to help. They have this one young lady, maybe in her early 20's. She is quite rude and VERY unfriendly. She seems to hate her job in this customer service based business. It was really noticeable today. Smith's is having a sale on the cookies. Buy two dozen and get the third for a penny. When a customer would ask her a question she would have the look of " are you serious!" Wow. I have personally been "helped" by her and she is the same every time. 5 stars for product, 2 stars for customer service. As a Bakersfield native I've bought birthday cakes, special occasion cakes, numerous cookies, donuts, punch, and more for over 50 years. Today was an absolute mess and embarrassment. While standing in line outside, properly distanced and wearing a mask, the door opened and a women said you can come in. As I stepped in a large women behind the counter yelled "sir only three customers allowed inside". I would have stepped back outside but I remembered that there were four customers inside a few minutes ago and no one was asked to step out. I questioned why the were four earlier and before I could finish my sentence she yelled to me over and over. The woman, who had let me in said "I'm sorry I let him in". The employee just kept yelling at me. I did go back out to wait. Those outside asked why I had to come back and as I explained, the woman behind me said that there were four inside a few minutes prior to me. We also noticed that one of the employees had a face shield but no mask which is not proper protection nor following the signage posted outside. Now I'm in a quandary, as much as I love Smith's products I really don't want to go back for future special orders. It will be a long time before I set foot in there again. read more

So sad. I walked in at 4:50pm. I purchased a healthy amount of cookies. Which I must say they had A LOT still left. I kindly asked to sample a broken cookie and two cookies I had never had before WHICH I did end up purchasing. And then I left after paying. And no, I didn't eagle eye her boxing up my order. I get in my car--driving away I reach into the box to grab a chocolate thumb drop and she had switched her favorite that I had ordered some of for the one I WAS ADAMANT NOT WANTING ANY OF!? What the heck!! Really!? I had to turn around in traffic. Go all the way back. Thankfully after literally BANGING on the locked glass door AFTER the OTHER woman saw and went to back QUICKLY as soon as she saw me. And then approximately three min later (not a big shop and no it doesn't take that long to come out from the back--maybe to get "your stories straight". Anyways, she finally comes out. Takes my box. WEIRD. sets it behind the counter. Goes in the back. Comes out with different cinnamon one and orange ones. Gets the chocolate from my box and other diff ones I ordered. And then I said "since you did that, could you throw in those cinnamon you can't possibly resale anyways in for my troubles?" She literally said the following, "No, my boss was mad at me for all the sampling." I looked at her incredulously! She looked at me and then said, "Yes, even though you purchased every one you tried." I left Smith's bakery on 34th street. I know she was speaking in Bad Faith which means everyone...lying out her PIE HOLE!! No one who owns a bakery would complain about three cookies and a person who bought dozens right before closing and timely to boot!! She was just mad that I bought HER COOKIES or she is just WEIRD. NEVER WILL I GO TO THIS PLACE AGAIN. I DON'T feel safe eating what she gave the 2nd time. And I will be contacting my credit card company. And the owner on Monday morning. -- I did contact them to no avail. Trying once again. Fourth and final time. Then credit card company may have their way with them. Life is too short for this boloney. Sad that a walk down memory lane was tainted in such a way by a person in this manner. Sad. And these cookies were to be shared with several different people this weekend. 7 year old bday, a person passing away, a lady meeting her mom for the 1st time, a friend relocating, the list goes on and on. Bought some cookies for one of my clients In Bakersfield and was very pleased with the service. I ordered an assortment of 6 dozen cookies and the clerk was very helpful with suggestions between the standard cookies and the specialized ones. I even broke my low no sugar/carb streak of 6 months by ordering this huge cinnamon roll that had nuts, raisins and topped with maple icing. It was so worth it! We called to place an order for champagne cupcakes and were told they had some and we could place the order over phone since we live out of town. We then called back to place the order and got a very rude person over the phone and were told it's first come first serve. We asked to speak to a manager & then were told that they have NO champagne cupcakes. The manager was the rudest of them all and it's disappointing as this has been a family spot for desserts for over 40+ years.
