I like Dr. Chen's bedside manner. He was very prompt in treating my dad and was able to give helpful suggestions over the phone when my dad had a toothache. Glad I found this place! Gotta be honest, going to a doctor or dentist is one of the things I dislike the most - I'm terrible with both pain and communication about what's wrong with me. But working with Dr. Chen got past all that - he totally understood my concerns, was able to offer the best course of action, without trying to bamboozle me over things I didn't need and everything went flawless, no pain, no fuss! His staff was great, and booking an appointment/going over medical details was quick and easy. Having dental anxiety, this is the best dentistry I've ever been to. Dr. Datu and his staff are so patient and caring. They let you take as many breaks as you need, for any reason, and they work with you so that they can give you the best care possible. I've never experienced a dental office that honestly cares for their patients as much as Dr. Datu's office does - they even let my husband stay with me for my first appointment to make sure I felt comfortable (and after that first appointment, I didn't feel the need to have my husband around just because of how supportive everyone in the office is). Just as a side note, Dr. Datu teaches at USC, which is why their office has such strange hours. But I've had no problems with getting appointments set up, even with the odd schedule. If you have dental anxiety or are just looking for a dentistry that truly cares for its patients, this is the place to go! read more

The staff was pleasant enough, but unfortunately not ethical. I came in for some pain felt in a back tooth. I needed a crown. He replaced after about 4 to 5 visits, which I never experienced in the past. Usually same day or only 2 visits. Upon any work being done and after giving them my insurance which they said they take and never billing my insurance, charged me nearly $1300. I paid, wrong on my part. Then checked with my insurance and was only to pay $245. They gave me the difference after I had to wait to get the money back while my insurance worked it out. Then I had to get a root canal on same tooth because he did not see the infection in the x-ray, through an endodonist. Then I went to another dentist to fix up the crown from the root canal and they tell me Datu failed to put the crown on properly. Now I had to go back to my insurance and have them get me back the $245 from Datu. I have received all my money back. For someone who teaches at USC, he and staff lack in ethics and good work. I lost months of time and much aggravation. read more

I've got to agree with Jerome G on this one. This dentist, David Datu, tries to convey intelligence but it only comes across as condescending and smug-like. For reference, I am a biology graduate and work in the medical industry, so it's not as if I'm some ignorant layman who cannot comprehend a medical professional's terminology. This is exactly the point: it's not particularly about what he says, it's about how he says it. It really doesn't matter if you teach at USC. One, there are plenty of professors out there that have no idea what they're talking about. Two, doing my own research about the dental school would indicate it's not necessarily an achievement that one should be so bombastic about. Also, it would be admirable to not be overly arrogant and boldly claim that "my classes" and "research shows" when the research I have done seem to run contrary to those claims. It's unfortunate when you get suckered into purchasing something simply because you want to protect your health, and then find after you leave that it was superfluous. I acknowledge that we all must take responsibility for our own decisions, so I and others should simply refuse until we can do our own research first; but, you know, you hope you can trust the guy who's got a sharp dental scaler in your mouth. The way in which Mr. Datu does this is in a sly, almost car salesman-like way. It reminds me of a more sophisticated form of parental guilt-tripping. It goes something like: "Well, this is the standard dental procedure now that everyone's getting done. Research shows that blah blah; we even do this in my classes at USC. You should be getting this done every six months now, okay? We've even reduced the cost to (insert costly amount) because I want patients to be able to afford this. But you know, it's up to you. I can do it right after this, it'll only take five minutes. You want to take care of your teeth." The way they get you, or at least get me, is because I know I won't be back for six months. I'd have to take another day off work and then deal with their inflexible schedule of only working three days a week because he's lecturing at USC (Not sure why Yelp says he is only off Thursday during the week when he's off both Tuesday and Thursday. This is confirmed by their phone message, receptionist, and of course, himself). I was going to give two stars because if you cannot afford the appointment on the day of - they don't take AMEX and I don't always have cash on me - they'll let you pay a week or so later. But now that I think of it, they require you to pay for the cleaning (you know, the thing you came for) then and there. The only thing they'll let you pay for a week later is for the excessive add-on procedures that you didn't want in the first place; so, of course they're willing to wait a little longer for that paycheck. $0 now or $100 in a week? That's a no-brainer. Alternatively, they will let you, and even encourage you, to apply for their whatever-they-call-it-debt-card that will eat your credit score. If you're financially sound, you already know to avoid cards like this; if you're not, please avoid this like the plague. It is NOT in your best interest (no pun intended). Conclusively, the last time I was at the office, the receptionist asked if I had a Yelp account and that they'd "so appreciate it" if I left a Yelp review. I said I have one but I don't post many reviews. Then once I got to the chair, the hygienist did the same. And last but not least, Mr. Datu himself. Inquiry after inquiry. "Did you tell him we're on Yelp? We'd really love it if you could post a good review for us. It really helps us. No rush... if you can just post up a review sometime later today or tomorrow, we'd really appreciate it.'" Hmm... I contemplated not posting one as I wasn't going to leave the 5-star review they really wanted. Then I thought, why hold back this relevant feedback to Yelpers who are inquiring about the truth? The staff and Dr. Datu are awesome! My gums would bleed whenever I brushed my teeth. Previous dentists and doctors could not solve the issue. One basic cleaning treatment by Dr. Datu and my gums haven't bleed while brushing since that cleaning and it has been 2 years! He's great with kids too. My six year old likes coming to the dentist. They do not take HMO when they say they do. This means they take HMO in order to get you into the eval chair. They should be more up front that by stating they take HMO they are actually saying they will provide a 10% discount. Call HMO and they state that Eval, X Ray and Cleaning are free. My wife wasted their time and hers for an eval, X Ray and up sell. I figured as much as HMO is lousy insurance but the expectation is Eval, X Ray, Cleaning as agreed with by the business with the HMO since this is what the HMO Provider stated as covered, for free, if listed as an In Network Provider. Last visit was with our previous dentist of over 12 years 6 months ago. Funny how my wife's teeth were fine there but needing almost $1500 worth of work after hitting the eval chair at Smile Gallery. If you have PPO or will pay out of pocket maybe they will work out fine for you. Good luck. read more

Dr Datu invited me to his office and the experience blew me away his staff was very professional and treated me like family, they could sense my nervousness and apprehensiveness, they made me feel right at home. I was very disappointed when I made an appointment here for my husband as a first time patient. I am pregnant so I was waiting til after the baby to get seen. I scheduled him for x-rays, teeth cleaning and all the good stuff our insurance covers. He walked in, got the x-rays and then was pulled into an office to go over $6,000 worth of dental work they needed to perform!! They sent him home with the estimates and didn't give him his teeth cleaning that our insurance clearly covers! I cancelled my appointment and will be looking for a dentist that wants to help his patients, not send them home after an incomplete visit and a huge estimate that'll make a man go broke! read more

I was recommended to Smile Gallery Dental by a close friend who has been patient for almost 20 years. At a Halloween party last year I had quite a bad fall down concrete steps and broke my front teeth. It was a disaster, although could have been much worse. In any case the next morning when I was informed of Dr Datu's brilliant work I called and they immediately scheduled an emergency appointment. The following day I was fitted with temporary crowns and I must say they matched the previous teeth extremely well, but that was just the beginning. the final porcelain fused gold crowns they fitted were truly amazing. They did custom shading to match my existing teeth and I might add the lab were they make the porcelain crowns is in close proximity to the surgery and it takes very little time to get the final measurements completed. Having been a smoker for many years my teeth were not in good shape and to be honest were in need of some serious attention. I was aware of this prior to the accident, so I guess the breaking of my fronts was in all a good motivator to get the rest of the work done. Following my front crowns I had two more fitted in the back, a deep scaling and a series of MO and MOD fillings. Now my teeth feel amazing and it was sure worth the time and money. I had avoided the dentist for many years due to bad experiences as a child, although after visiting Smile Gallery Dental I actually enjoy visiting the dentist. All the staff who work there are extremely professional and very friendly at the same time. Furthermore, in light of doctor Datu's amazing work I have decided to have all my front teeth crowned. This will eliminate the overcrowding I have on the bottom and close several gaps I have on the top, giving me a truly perfect smile. It is also important to note that I was never pressurized into having this work done and in fact when I mentioned I was interested in having more work done the staff sat down with me and explained what could be done in great detail and showed me before and after photos of previous success stories. I would recommend Dr Datu at Smile Gallery Dental to anyone in need of a excellent dentist in a relaxed and friendly environment. After not visiting a dentist for quite a few years, i had a filling fall out and needed to get it fixed asap. I found Dr. Datu on the list my insurance provider gave me, and scheduled an appt. His staff was courteous and professional on the phone, and the same in person. I, like most people, DREAD going to the dentist for anything, but after meeting Dr. Datu, i was set at ease. My lost filling ended up needing a crown, but the procedure wasn't uncomfortable, and i feel that i got a great value for my dollar. I found my new family dentist. The staff & Dr are all great, made me & my daughter feel very comfortable. I had a filling that fell out & he tried his best to keep it from a root canal but unfortunately after a month I couldn't avoid it. I've had a crown & filling & didn't feel much pain (although the drilling for the final impression did hurt). They gave me a couple of estimates, the recommended 1 that my HMO of course doesn't cover & 1 my insurance does. He tried to be as conservative as possible, 1st trying a filling instead of just going for a crown. Also, every new dentist I've gone to told me they need to give me a deep cleaning but he didn't. I haven't had a dentist like this since my childhood dentist. It's a little bit of a ways out for me but I'm really happy I took the chance. Only downside is their hours are std business hours so I have to take time off work but it's totally worth it for the comfort. read more
