I found this place when I needed an emergency root canal. Dr. Shen is amazing and so is her staff.

I came here for my wisdom teeth extraction and Dr Shen is in charge. She is very professional and did the job clean and fast. The atmosphere is relax and made the process more enjoyable. I cannot praise and recommend Dr. Nguy enough!! He saved me from having to have two fillings redone for no reason at all proposed by my previous dentist. He also did an excellent job on my husbands wisdom tooth removal. While he had been postponing this for 10 years and the tooth had to be broken from the bone and we expected the worst (swelling, pain etc) when he finally got it done, Dr. Nguy managed to do it so well that he had very little pain and no swelling. He was back to work in just 3 days. Amazing job! My long story: My old dentist (Dr. Le, El Paseo Dental) during a routine checkup tried to adjust a tight gap between teeth, where previously two fillings had been made to tight. I didn't ask for this, but he decided to do it anyways. After he tried to adjust it, I was now unable to floss entirely and after that dentist spend half an hour trying to fix it again, he said he has to redo the fillings. I was very upset and decided to get a second opinion by Dr. Nguy. Dr. Nguy fixed the entire situation in 2 minutes. No injection, no pain, no redoing of any fillings, just the right tools and skills. Dr. Nguy saved me so much pain, agony, time and money on this one, that I am sure to switch office immediately. He is fantastic! read more

Smile by Design is an unethical practice that wrongfully rejects patients providing excuses such as "I don't know how to schedule an appointment" (by the receptionist) or promising to call the patient back and never actually doing so (Alexis- Office Manager), among other unacceptable tactics designed to discourage the patient from seeking services at the clinic. These patients have an HMO insurance plan, with which the practice has a contract, thus Smile by Design is breaking the contract and opening itself to a lawsuit. Why Smile by Design doesn't want to admit HMO patients? Because they cannot milk their insurance as much as their PPO patients'. By definition - the HMO network is a group of providers that have agreed to lower their rates for plan members, thus not being reimbursed at the PPO (higher) rates. Why are they risking its reputation and possible fines in court? Because many patients are uninformed about the insurance plans and contract law and - after being strung along for weeks with a toothache - prefer to switch to a different dental practice and forget about the awful experience at Smile by Design. Two suggestion for Smile by Design - 1.) don't sign a legally binding agreement with HMO if you plan to reject its customers and thus break it and 2.) don't lie to the HMO agent and its customer while your phone conversation is being recorded. Needless to say, my HMO plan is aware of the situation and we'll be failing a complaint. I really hope you realize how unethical and unprofessional your practice is and higher your standard of conduct to those of dental professionals. read more

I am so grateful that I found Dr. Shen's website when I was having extreme pain from my wisdom tooth and discomfort from side effect of pain killer, they almost saved my life! I called the office on the day when it's closed, but the staff of Smile By Design are so nice that agreed to ask Dr. Shen to treat me as an emergency, and Dr Shen drove from SF to Mountain View for an hour to give me immediate and comprehensive treatment. Not only Dr. Shen and her assistant helped me identified the pain of tooth, they also helped me with medication to stop the nausea from side effect of Ibuprofen, after I felt much better they did a quick and professional tooth extraction, cleaning up of infection, filling up with bone graft without pain and cleaned up very nicely. The whole process took less than an hour! I couldn't thank Dr. Shen and her staff enough for this extra effort to treat me on a non working day and really put patient's health as first priority, I would highly recommend Dr. Shen for dental care and surgery, and I would definitely come back in the future if I need dental treatment. read more

After moving to South Bay, I'd like to say I've finally found my go-to dental place here at Smile By Design. I came in for a regular checkup and cleaning. The front desk staff is helpful, the facility is clean and bright. The dental assistants were efficient and sociable. Dr. Wei did what I thought was a very thorough checkup. He explained all the x-rays they took of my teeth - went through them almost one by one with me. His cleaning was also thorough and careful. One thing I might want to point out is that he might be a tad rough while doing the flossing portion. Other than that, I thought he was very efficient and careful. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this dentistry (at least for their regular checkups). read more

This place is awesome! I had an aching wisdom tooth problem in March and it was seen and removed at the very same day. Fast forward to July and I had the rest of my wisdom teeth removed because they were likely to cause more problems. It was a very painless process, and everyone is very personable and helpful. They give you this after-care kit for recovery after the surgery, and their instructions are very thorough and clear. My husband got his wisdom tooth extraction (surgery) from Dr Shenn. She's an experience & a very good dentist. The staff is super friendly & caring . My husband got dry socket after the surgery and when we called them they immediately set an appointment & did the procedure without any extra cost. We didn't have dental insurance,which we told them so they give us the best price with a great service.(We called couple of other place as well for the price check). Do not get treated or checked by the assistant Lila or Layla" whatever her name is) she is completely unprofessional and loud and can barely speak English! She yanked my face toward her when taking xrays and was unapologetic when I gave her a concering look. She spoke so loudly and close to my ear. Not to mention that it was so hard to understand her thick accent. No chair side manners whatsoever! Really need to say THANK YOU SO MUCH to Dr. Shen and her professional group. Very good experience during my each visit, the receptionists there are so nice and welcoming, the doctors and assistants are really professional. I was suffered for sever tooth-pain and tooth infection during my 6months pregnancy, so I gave a call to Smile By Design, they let me in on the second day and got the treatment. That was awesome for me, I didn't have to worry about my bad teeth during the rest of my pregnancy. After that I decided to have new implants to replace my 2 old bridges, Dr. Shen and her group made a plan and explained it to me very clearly. Every time when I walked in, I always got a warm welcome and got a phone call from them to make sure how was everything going on after the procedure (pain, bleeding, etc). Finally, they helped me to get my 4 implants done last Friday, they looks so pretty and no one can tell those are implants! Now, I can have a big smile with my new implants. Victoria at the front desk needs to learn her job! Not a knowledgeable person to be representing Smile by Design! I have DeltaCare/Delta Dental insurance, spoke with Victoria on 1/11/17 to set up an appointment as a new patient. She first was not able to find my name in the system, and i then emailed to her a photocopy of my insurance card. Victoria then mentioned to me all i had to do was call my insurance to make "Smile By Design" my provider with the 6 digit code "023615". Victoria said she would call me once she confirmed my appointment. Okay, I called Delta Dental and did so. After that, I emailed to confirm this information same day. I then received a text confirmation of my appointment on 1/12/17, CONFIRMING my appointment. I assumed since Victoria did not call me back, this text meant all was confirmed. On 1/18/17 I received a voice message from Victoria stating that I was assigned to another doctors office, she stated "but you can still come in, but you just gotta give your insurance a call so they can go ahead and have you be assigned to us". Okay, i hopped on the phone with my insurance provider, to be made a fool of! They directly called Smile by Design, spoke to Victoria, with me on the line, and Victoria told me they no longer accept my insurance. Why this information was not provided to me over a week ago on 1/11/17, I could have had my teeth taken care of by now from a successful dentist office. And Victoria had the nerve to say, "but you can still come in and just pay out of pocket". Ummm... hello Victoria, there is a reason we have insurance! Duh! This office does not know it's right from it's left! Customer Service here is an all time low! I'd recommend investing in your employees and you will have a successful business! read more

I would like to start off by saying THANK YOU to everyone who helped me out during my visits. Dr shen, maverick (hopefully I spelled that correct) the assistants, everyone was so kind and welcoming. I had not been to a dentist in a couple years and I was in pain because of a impacted wisdom tooth. I called and made an emergency walk in, first of all, I could not find another dentist location that would accept me as a walk in. SMILE BY DESIGN took me in the same day I called. I could not bare the pain anymore so I came in for a check up. Turns out I had a wisdom tooth issue, and I wasn't ready at the moment for the tooth removal (financially) they prescribed me some meds to help with the pain while i got paid. They set up an appointment for Friday (04-06-2018) and i was VERY nervous because I don't like needles, I don't like dentists BUT they made me feel the most comfortable I've ever felt in a dentist location. The procedure went very well and very fast, NOT PAINFUL AT ALL. they made me feel like they really cared about my hygiene and taking the pain away. I finished up and now am in recovery. Dr. Donian Shen was on my DeltaDentalUSA list and she had several 5 star reviews on Yelp so I made an appointment. First, there was a misunderstanding of who would do my appointment. I thought I made it with Dr Shen and that she would would be the dentist. When I protested because another dentist was going to do the procedures she reluctantly agreed. Secondly, she did X-rays and told me I had a large cavity between 2 crowned teeth and that both crowns would have to be removed and replaced. Few dentists take my policy but that didn't feel right so I never went back. Fast forward a year and the new dentist I finally went to found no evidence of any cavity. I'm not accusing Dr. Shen of "making business" but I'm really grateful I didn't have that expensive procedure! read more

My front tooth broke in half a few weeks ago. It was a Friday Evening, and I started looking for a dentist online. After about calling a ton of offices I came upon Smile By Design. They were very helpful over the phone and able to get me in within 30 minutes. I rushed to their office and was seen right away. Smile By Design is a really great place to have your dental problems solved. The team is very efficient and helpful. Coming into their office for the first time, I was welcomed and treated with a warmth and kindness. Dr Shen is very knowlegable and very detailed. She did a great job in matching the crown to the rest of the teeth. My friends can't tell the fake tooth. The best part of this office is not only the dentist and her staff are competent, but also they are able to take in emergencies late in the afternoon just like me. It was very convenient! Patients beware! this facility conceals insurance covered procedures and use non-covered procedure to charge you big money without telling you first. I had 2 crowns from them, they come up a procedure "D014 - laser crown lengthening" , which D014 is not even a valid procedure code from dental insurance benefit book, stating because dentist needs to go below gum line they need to charge this insurance not covered procedure. Last year they charge $450 and this year they raise to $750. They ask me to pay first before I can see the dentist to discuss the treatment options and fees. This huge charge raises red flag about this facility. I file a grievance against this facility to my insurance to investigate my case about this charge. The resolution comes up I just need to pay $50 using Gingivectomy. That is $700 difference for one crown! And I have good employment HMO dental insurance with low co-pay. read more
