I had pretty unbearable tooth pain recently and decided to schedule an appointment only to find out that I needed a root canal.. I was very nervous about the whole procedure (the filling I had was completed by a different dentist in Nevada) and the procedure back then was very painful, so needing a root canal on that same tooth didn't put me at ease.. Dr. Wei was excellent, I had slight discomfort during the procedure and he found ways to put me at ease, the procedure was quick, easy and the stories the Dr and assistant had took my mind off the procedure and was engaged with them! Everyone at the office is very friendly and allows you to ask questions, thank you again!! Last week I had the worst toothache on the upper right. Nothing helped. Motrin did nothing for me. I could taste something salty in my mouth. I think I had an infection. My dentist that I usually go to was not able help me since he does not open on Saturdays and he was not answering his machine. Luckily I found Dr. Shen. She got me in right away. It turns out I had a crack in my tooth and it could not be saved. She was so to caring and explained everything she had to do. I would need to pull out the tooth since it could not be saved. I could get a bridge or implant. I did choose to get the bone replacement. She explained that it would keep the current bone on position so that I could get an implant later. I just didn't want my cheeks to sink on like my mom when she got some of her teeth out. When she pull out my tooth I did not feel a thing. I didn't even feel the shot. Her assistant kept checking in with me to see it I was OK during the whole procedure. I can't believe my dentist waa not answering his phone. Dr. Shen definitely earned my trust. I didn't end up getting treatment here, so this review is strictly about the attitude and conduct of the staff. I had booked an appointment for a wisdom tooth extraction. Upon arrival, they asked for an X-ray. I told them I had recently done one and asked if I could have it sent over by my previous dentist to avoid paying for a duplicate. I left to try arranging that, but came back when I realized I needed to request it in advance. Eventually, I agreed to take a new X-ray -- which, it turns out, was covered by insurance anyway. Instead of being understanding, the nurse repeatedly told me, "See, now you wasted so much time," in a very condescending tone. During the X-ray, she pointed at one of my teeth and said, "That's very bad, see? Lots of bone loss. I see something but I'm not going to tell you -- wait for the doctor." The way she said it felt almost gleeful, like a sniffer dog that had found drugs, with zero regard for how alarming or stressful this might be to a human being hearing such news. When Dr. Shen came in, she examined me and said I had deep pockets near my upper molar (tooth #15) and likely needed to have that one extracted too. The examination was rough and uncomfortable. There was no empathy -- just a sense that both she and her assistant were overly animated, even excited, as they examined the X-rays and my mouth. It felt like they kept scraping longer than necessary, more focused on what they were seeing than how I was feeling. Dr. Shen was very insistent that I would lose the tooth. I told her that my periodontist had recommended a deep cleaning first to try and save it. Once I expressed hesitation, her tone changed -- she became noticeably impatient and even more dismissive. When I asked about the pros and cons of removing the tooth now versus waiting, and whether there was any urgency, she simply said it would heal better if removed together with tooth #16. I asked, "But at the cost of losing a tooth that might still have some years of use?" Her response: "Up to you." No further discussion, just pure indifference. When I indicated it was painful during examination, she said "Physical pain now only, emotion pain later when you lose your teeth" My wife followed up with a few questions, and Dr. Shen actually said, "Use common sense before you ask questions." That was a breaking point for us in terms of professionalism. Finally, just before we were about to proceed with surgery, they recommended adding bone collagen for an additional $500 out of pocket. Dr. Shen explained it was helpful and prevented gum collapse. Then a surgical assistant came in and told us it was medically necessary -- that without it, the wound would be left open and they wouldn't be able to sew the gum shut. I asked why the gum would be left open and whether that's standard -- she didn't explain clearly, but was clearly pushing hard to upsell the $500 procedure. After checking with another source (ChatGPT), I found that leaving the site open is actually common practice and not necessarily harmful. Yet they made it sound like declining collagen would leave me with an improperly healed or exposed wound. At that point, I had had enough. I declined the procedure and walked out. As a dentist, you should understand that many patients hope to preserve their natural teeth whenever possible -- not just because it's cheaper, but because it matters to their long-term well-being and quality of life. Recommending extraction simply because it's easier or more convenient is not acceptable. Patients deserve to be treated with respect, empathy, and full, transparent information. Sadly, none of that was present here -- not from Dr. Shen, and not from her staff. read more

Run, don't walk- price gouging, and unnecessary recommendation of Dental procedure. I had a dental Implant procedure a few years ago that traumatized me- I did not See a dentist for about 1.5 years after that procedure. I Went back because it was an emergency and I knew I would need an implant- to remove my tooth and get a bone graft, I paid over $3,000 out of pocket and she billed my medical insurance another $19,000 - she also received payment from my dental insurance. I Asked questions about the billing because it seemed fraudulent and she withdrew the medical claim never returned any of my calls. I decided to continue the implant elsewhere- the total bill if I would have done everything with this dentist - Dr Carroll would have been less than $2,000. Just imagine the price difference for superior experience and service. Please run from this business. read more

Dealing with the office manager (Diana) here was a nightmare. I went in for a root canal and when I was given the receipt after paying, I noticed several of the listed charges had a note saying "No Bill Ins" next to them. When I asked the office manager what that meant, she says this office doesn't bill the insurance for services they "know for sure the insurance won't cover" so I had pay that out of pocket (over $500). This sounded suspicious to me, so I checked with my insurance afterwards and they in fact do cover all of that. I had to then contact the office manager again and insist that she bill the insurance for those services, which she initially resisted and kept claiming that she "knows for sure that they don't cover it." After many exchanges, she finally agreed to bill the insurance and guess what... these services were FULLY COVERED. I should not have been forced to pay anything out of pocket. Even after the claims had been processed, the refund was not automatic. I had to keep contacting the office manager for months on end in order to finally get my refund, and never once did she even apologize for the incorrect charges or admit that she was wrong about the insurance not covering these services. I expressed that I was afraid to return to this office for further services because of this experience, and she ignored these concerns. I asked to speak directly to the owner several times and those requests were denied as well. Check your bills from this place VERY carefully - they are actively trying to scam people out of money. As if that wasn't bad enough, after all this, I started having pain in the tooth that received the root canal. I went back to see Dr. Wei, who was suddenly acting very annoyed and hostile when he was not like that at my initial appt. Instead of taking responsibility for the fact that something had gone wrong with the work he did on my teeth and doing anything to fix it, he said that I need to go see an endodontist to resolve this issue. I wish I had just gone to an endodontist in the first place; if a root canal goes wrong there, they re-do it for free. Not the case here. Now I will incur additional charges by having to go to another doctor to fix Dr. Wei's mistakes. read more

Came here to get both bottom wisdom teeth removed. Although no surgery is fun, they made me feel comfortable and made sure I was okay during the whole process. I cannot praise and recommend Dr. Nguy enough!! He saved me from having to have two fillings redone for no reason at all proposed by my previous dentist. He also did an excellent job on my husbands wisdom tooth removal. While he had been postponing this for 10 years and the tooth had to be broken from the bone and we expected the worst (swelling, pain etc) when he finally got it done, Dr. Nguy managed to do it so well that he had very little pain and no swelling. He was back to work in just 3 days. Amazing job! My long story: My old dentist (Dr. Le, El Paseo Dental) during a routine checkup tried to adjust a tight gap between teeth, where previously two fillings had been made to tight. I didn't ask for this, but he decided to do it anyways. After he tried to adjust it, I was now unable to floss entirely and after that dentist spend half an hour trying to fix it again, he said he has to redo the fillings. I was very upset and decided to get a second opinion by Dr. Nguy. Dr. Nguy fixed the entire situation in 2 minutes. No injection, no pain, no redoing of any fillings, just the right tools and skills. Dr. Nguy saved me so much pain, agony, time and money on this one, that I am sure to switch office immediately. He is fantastic! read more

I am so grateful that I found Dr. Shen's website when I was having extreme pain from my wisdom tooth and discomfort from side effect of pain killer, they almost saved my life! I called the office on the day when it's closed, but the staff of Smile By Design are so nice that agreed to ask Dr. Shen to treat me as an emergency, and Dr Shen drove from SF to Mountain View for an hour to give me immediate and comprehensive treatment. Not only Dr. Shen and her assistant helped me identified the pain of tooth, they also helped me with medication to stop the nausea from side effect of Ibuprofen, after I felt much better they did a quick and professional tooth extraction, cleaning up of infection, filling up with bone graft without pain and cleaned up very nicely. The whole process took less than an hour! I couldn't thank Dr. Shen and her staff enough for this extra effort to treat me on a non working day and really put patient's health as first priority, I would highly recommend Dr. Shen for dental care and surgery, and I would definitely come back in the future if I need dental treatment. read more

This place is awesome! I had an aching wisdom tooth problem in March and it was seen and removed at the very same day. Fast forward to July and I had the rest of my wisdom teeth removed because they were likely to cause more problems. It was a very painless process, and everyone is very personable and helpful. They give you this after-care kit for recovery after the surgery, and their instructions are very thorough and clear. Smile by Design is an unethical practice that wrongfully rejects patients providing excuses such as "I don't know how to schedule an appointment" (by the receptionist) or promising to call the patient back and never actually doing so (Alexis- Office Manager), among other unacceptable tactics designed to discourage the patient from seeking services at the clinic. These patients have an HMO insurance plan, with which the practice has a contract, thus Smile by Design is breaking the contract and opening itself to a lawsuit. Why Smile by Design doesn't want to admit HMO patients? Because they cannot milk their insurance as much as their PPO patients'. By definition - the HMO network is a group of providers that have agreed to lower their rates for plan members, thus not being reimbursed at the PPO (higher) rates. Why are they risking its reputation and possible fines in court? Because many patients are uninformed about the insurance plans and contract law and - after being strung along for weeks with a toothache - prefer to switch to a different dental practice and forget about the awful experience at Smile by Design. Two suggestion for Smile by Design - 1.) don't sign a legally binding agreement with HMO if you plan to reject its customers and thus break it and 2.) don't lie to the HMO agent and its customer while your phone conversation is being recorded. Needless to say, my HMO plan is aware of the situation and we'll be failing a complaint. I really hope you realize how unethical and unprofessional your practice is and higher your standard of conduct to those of dental professionals. read more
