Didn't think I'd have a chance to upgrade my review for this San Clemente location, but after Smashburger rolled out their new app, I finally got that opportunity! Smashburger recently upgraded their app so that if you download the app, you can get a free Single Classic Smash on your next visit. I had already downloaded the app a few years ago, but it looks way different now than before. A better kind of different in that I find it more user-friendly and in line with other restaurant apps on my phone. I signed into the new app, not knowing if I would have gotten the free Single Classic Smash for having already been a rewards member, but I at least wanted to see what the new app looked like. The old app wasn't very exciting or as easy to use, and there weren't any enticing deals that would make me want to be a regular there, especially since I'm trying to reduce my intake of red meat. A day or two later, I was pleasantly surprised to have received an email from Smashburger indicating that I had indeed qualified for the reward. It's good for 14 days, but I wasn't sure if I'd have the time to redeem it at the Carson location, which is closest to me. I knew I was going to pass by San Clemente during that 14-day period, however, so I used the opportunity to pay a return visit. When I arrived just past 8 PM, I didn't see anybody inside! I almost thought it was closed, but saw the front door ajar. Another customer came in immediately afterwards, and an employee in the kitchen (Pedro?) noticed us waiting at the front. He came out the back to assist me, and his female co-worker assisted the other customer. I told Pedro I wanted to redeem the complimentary Single Classic Smash, but wasn't sure if I needed to do anything on my phone. All I had to do was tell him my phone number, and he found my reward in my account. He then asked me for my name, which I stated even though I thought it should have appeared on his screen after entering my phone number? He realized his oversight, but was cool about it. Although the restaurant was empty, I ordered to go because I wanted a wrapper to hold the burger while I was eating. If you order for here, they don't give you a wrapper. It took about five minutes before the female employee handed me my takeout bag. Inside my takeout bag were a couple packets of ketchup, but on the tables, they had both ketchup and mustard. I simply took out the burger, added both condiments inside the burger, and enjoyed it. And it tasted so much better than the first time I had it here that I'm willing to award an extra star. Still a little pricey with the normal price being $7.99, and the burger wasn't even that big too. I had a chicken sandwich from Chick-fil-A right before this, and I wasn't full after eating the burger. I also had some crispy brussels sprouts a few times from this location, and they provide some ranch dressing as well. Brussels sprouts are one of children's least favorite vegetables, but I feel their opinion will change with Smashburger's version. Granted, they're certainly not as healthy since they're lightly fried and seasoned with steak butter, but it's a great start to get your kiddos to eat their greens. The San Clemente Smashburger is in Gateway Village Plaza, where there is an Albertsons, so after enjoying my complimentary burger, I browsed around the grocery store before heading out. One thing to note is that if you want to get back on the 5 freeway from Smashburger, you'll have to cross the parking lot and get off at Avenidia Presidio before turning left at Avenida Pico. Don't directly get back on Avenida Pico because it's a right turn only there. Luckily, you can re-enter the plaza and avoid having to find a turnaround point. Like I said, I'm not a regular at Smashburger, even the Carson location, so I don't plan a return visit until I get a good deal, which I haven't seen much of anyways. However, I have more confidence that I'll enjoy my next burger from Smashburger. Just don't expect the best tasting burger ever in spite of how good their burgers look on their website lol. read more

The chicken tenders are not seasoned. You need to haves sauce so it doesn't scratch up the roof of your mouth. It's so bland, that ketchup couldn't stand up to it. Speaking of ketchup, they couldn't afford to give me a ketchup packet for dunking these 5 tenders in for a subtotal of $18.91; no, they give you regular packets. Why does Chick-fil-A have to close on Sunday? While I'm at it, these fries are short and not that satisfying to peck at. I should've gotten nuggets and fries from McDonald's. I have always come here to get burgers and sweet potato fries in person. I haven't used any delivery service with this place, therefore I can't speak for that aspect. I have been here for total of three times and I have had good experiences. I enjoy the Single Classic Smash with extra onions and pickles. There is nothing special about the burger, but it is delicious when you are craving a burger on the whim. Truthfully, the Sweet Potato fries and milkshakes are what is worth getting at SmashBurger. The Sweet Potato fries are delicious and addicting. They make their milkshakes with Häagen-Dazs ice-cream, which you can't go wrong with that! I have had great service with this location. Nice place for a quick lunch! Located in a strip mall, parking was easy to find. Step up to a counter to order, you are given a number, then someone brings your order to you. The staff were friendly and the place was clean . I ordered the truffle mushroom double cheese burger. It was yummy!! I love that Smashburger make things to order, so it tastes fresh. The beef is tender and juicy and it was full of truffle flavor. My only complaint was there was too much mayonnaise. I had to scrape it off. I also ordered the sweet potato fries. They were tasty but not crispy and not hot. Next time I'll ask for extra crispy. I also got a drink which is self serve. I started out with lemonade and iced tea..and got a refill of Diet Coke to go. First visit to this location. I had the BBQ bacon double cheddar which came out hot and fresh, everything cooked perfectly. Crisp onion strings. Chewy bacon with minimal fat. Melting in cheddar cheese. On a fresh bun. I'm not a big fan of burgers but Smash is by far the tastiest I've had and is consistently good. Staff were very friendly and wore masks the entire time I was here, and the dining area and mens room were clean. It's a good place to eat right now given their layout with several small booths indoors plus an outdoor patio so there's a sense of space. My experience was nothing like many of the older reviews. Today I tried smash burger again for the first time in a longggg time(had a bad prior experience) and let me just say this. What a lovely establishment with beautifully fresh ingredients. The bun was fresh and warm, the lettuce crisp and chilled, tomato's had snap, onions had bite. The patty was a wonderfully cooked and I could definitely tell it had been smashed which is their signature technique( hence the name "Smash Burger" lmao). Would highly recommend this restaurant for those seeking finer things in life and aren't willing to spend a pretty penny. My cheeseburger and frenchfries totaled $13.50 and after I tipped $2 my total was $15.50 a steep cost but in my opinion worth it. I could not bring myself to give it a full 5 stars after the lady taking my order gave me fries when I ordered tots and she was on her cell phone so she didn't not even hear me say oh sorry I wanted the tots. I am a burger snob that has been to the birthplace of the burger, Louis' Lunch in New Haven CT, and the Apple Pan in Westwood, and everything in between. Smash Burger is simply the best burger I have had in my life. The fresh beef is in the shape of a ball and is "smashed" onto the grill to create a magical feathery, crumbly, caramelized edge that is one the best things you will ever taste! (I know Five Guys does it like this but theirs does not taste like this, not even in the ballpark.) The bun is great too, not a run of the mill burger bun. Looks like a sourdough roll but soft and with a milder taste. The first time you come here I recommend you get a simple burger or cheeseburger so you can really taste the beef.
