If I could give zero stars, I would. Smart Move completely mishandled my move from start to finish. They showed up with the wrong size truck, which meant I was forced to move two car loads and two additional truckloads myself because their truck couldn't fit everything. That alone is unacceptable and completely unprofessional. To make matters worse, they showed up with TWO moving blankets. For an entire third-floor apartment move. It was shocking. How do you send a moving crew out that unprepared? Ryan and Steven, the actual movers, were nice and tried their best but they said they never send just two guys to do a third floor move. I was quoted for 2 1/2 hours, and somehow the job dragged out to 5 1/2 hours, leaving me with a bill that was nearly $700 MORE than what I was quoted and budgeted for. No clear explanation. No accountability. This was a third-floor apartment, and the person I booked with failed to write that down, so they only sent two movers. Completely unprepared for the amount of work involved. My family and friends worked harder than the actual moving crew did. We were carrying items and making extra trips while they moved at an unbelievably slow pace. It honestly felt like we were paying them while doing the majority of the work ourselves. When we reached out to the owner hoping for a fair resolution, he was not helpful at all. It took three days just to get a response, and their "solution" was to credit us for ONE hour of work. After all of that. So now I'm left with an extremely high bill that I never agreed to and never expected, for a move that was mismanaged from the very beginning. DO NOT HIRE SMART MOVE, LLC (BILLY CHARLES CAPPS III) !!! I hired Smart Move, LLC. in May 2025. Paulina Martelo is who booked my appointment. She went above and beyond to get me on their schedule and spoke very highly of the moving crew they have. She said they amaze her (that is very disturbing considering my experience ). My items were dropped off and almost everything they touched were DAMAGED. 1) Mirror Sideboard - The frame and mirror are both cracked. This happened while they had possession of it on their truck. They were not going to tell me about the damage but when they delivered it but they forgot to remove some clamps attached, saying that they tried to "fix" it. 2) Italian leather king headboard - A hole is gashed into the headboard and scratched throughout. They did not even get the headboard into the bedroom it belongs in, instead it was left in the garage. 3) Dresser - Delivered with cracks and scratches. 4) Washing machine - A mover dropped the machine while carrying it to the truck and the frame cracked. 5) Sofa & Loveseat - A mover sliced the bottom open with box cutter while taking the plastic wrap off of it. 6) New House - They dented and scratched up the sheet rock in my new house (walls and wood staircase). I followed their process to complete and submit a claim form (to include pictures) before the deadline. When I tried to follow up with them, a worker named Pablo answered the phone and would not help me or let me speak to someone that would. He talked very hateful and yelled at me that I could not speak to the claims department or the manager/owner. I was charged a total of $2,092 for them to move my things within a 10 mile radius and they wrecked almost every item they touched. It took 4 movers, 8 hours, to move 1 king bed, 2 nightstands, 1 dresser, 2 leaning mirrors, 1 sideboard, 1 desk, 1 bookcase, 1 treadmill, 1 sofa, 1 loveseat, 1 washer, 1 dryer . They also charged my cc an additional $100 without authorization (after the move was completed and the movers left). I am currently working with The BBB & WRAL 5 On Your Side to dispute this company's actions. These people are a complete joke! They take your money and hide behind a computer/phone. Whenever possible, I believe it's best to support your local businesses. In this case, we did. We hired Smart Move to relocate my mother from Raleigh to Wilson. Not only did these young men show up on time, but they handled the move with ease. I really liked the way the two guys worked together as a team to negotiate the best way to move the many boxes and furnishings that my mother had... and to add to it, they didn't take all day to get her from one place to another, and to place and setup in her new apt like reassembling her bed. If we had it to do all over again, I would make the same choice. read more

Worst moving company ever. Packed, stored, and delivered my items with scratches, scrapes, water damage, and some items had to be completely replaced. Absolutely no return calls from the owner/office, even though the movers said not to worry, that the company would cover the damage...several thousand dollars. My attorney said that it would cost more to sue them than the cost of the damages. If for some reason you're tempted to hire these clowns...don't. Just don't. As a lot of younger guys, 2 of the 3 were on their phones very much, which takes a lot of time away. 1 guy stacked items in truck: Great job cause i didn't think all my stuff would fit, but it did!! Unloading, the same guy pulled items 2 end of truck where the other 2 carried items 2 wherever I asked them to in house & outside sheds, again: Great job! I'm handicapped, so they saved me a lot of time moving things around in my house. And, nothing was broken!!! I would use this company again any time. read more

So, first, there's all the negative mentioned in my original review to consider. I was at the point of letting it go and just letting others know about my experience (because if you can't get the problem solved, maybe you can help people avoid it, right?) This is being offset against the work done by Mr. Michael C. at the corporate office for the company, who has diligently worked to try and make the situation right, including getting payment for the damages authorized, promising re-training of the individuals in question and the proper procedures to ensure this doesn't happen to others, and being in regular communication with me throughout. If reviewed on my original notes, this would have still been a 1-star before the promise of correcting the bad actions of the individuals I had at my house. With correction, that would be more of a 2-star experience. That is offset against Mr. C.'s excellent customer service on this, which by itself would be a 5-star experience. Overall, this brings the company up to roughly a 3.5-star experience for my situation, with hope that their next customer will have a better experience than I did. Rounding up from that to 4-stars. Note to the company: you need to focus more on individuals like Mr. C. in your organization. Businesses live or die on their reputation, and he's one of the good ones. read more

I recently moved from XXX to YYY using Smart Move. Pros: The crew worked hard. Finished moving on the day they said they will be finished with. Cons: 1) Wrong truck size: they did not have enough room for our belongings. We had local & cross-county movings in the last 5 years but none of the movers came with such a small trucks. 2) Fragile items were packed by them on the day before, but apparently packing was poorly done and multiple fragile items were found broken. 3) Poor communication among workers. Even if we spoke with one of the crew members about where things should go, the other crew members had clueless and they keep placing items in wrong places (even the boxes were labeled accordingly). 4) They forgot to take TV and left the house. When the truck left I was not present at home, but apparently they did not do walk through before taking off. When I checked the house after they left, I had to deal with the TV. We could not fit TV in our vehicles so we had to leave the TV in the neighbors house and return to get the TV later. 5) They assembled the king sized beds wrong, they assembled the dresser mirror wrong, making hopes on the wrong spots. King bed leg was damaged (chipped), dresser got a large dented scratch that cannot be masked, coffee table got multiple scratches 6) They did not bring their water or anything. We do not mind getting water etc. but we had to feed them lunch and dinner at two locations. We are moving and are as busy as they are, but had to go grocery stores to get their drinks and order food for them while we ourselves worked so hard for moving. 7) Poorly organized. They took so long to find the right screws etc. to re-assemble furniture. Our past movers labeled currently and kept them with the items that were supposed to be paired. So Smart Move could use such practice. 8) The leader of the crew left in a middle of the move due to family emergency. It was understandable, but that caused another communication problems among the crew members and they ended up leaving our house around 11:00pm. read more

Hired them at the last minute to move our home after another mover dumped us at the last minute. Four, very nice, high school kids showed up. They were very pleasant and considerate. They showed up on time. I have nothing but praise for the workers. Now for the bad, the company does not train their workers how to move expensive items and furniture. When I asked about the rubber bands needed to hold the blankets during transit, they said the owner does not provide them with them. What??? During transit, only five miles away, the blankets fell down and the furniture rubbed against each other. Sure enough, our furniture was scratched badly during transit. Price wise, they were not a bargain, but we were not looking for a bargain. Just a company that knew how to move properly. It was obvious after looking at their reviews why they were available when everyone else was not. Unless you are desperate, like we were, stay away. After reading the reviews on this company, I was hesitant to hire them. However, due to time constraints, I hired this company. They did an amazing job! They were able to load the trucks very quickly. The gentleman came back to make sure everything was situated in our new home. The guys were very polite, very mannerable and they worked in a timely fashion. No destruction or incidents occurred in our home. It was a wonderful experience! I moved from Wilson to Clayton over the weekend!!! Hired 4 movers and only 3 show up on time while the 4th movers just walks his way in last minute at the end of my packing in Wilson!!! I called to follow up and was told that by my move being in Clayton was the reason for my move going over 30 mins!!! I believe if he was on time my moved would have not gone over. Do not use the company! They damaged my furniture. My bedroom set was around 6 months old and had no damages. Now there's paint missing and nicks in multiple pieces after they moved it. My living room set was damaged as well. They also removed the legs from the chairs and did not put them back on properly. I pointed this out and the workers just shrugged it off or said it happened while in the truck. I spoke to the office manager and was told they would get back in contact with me. He had an attitude over the phone. At the time this review was written I still have not received a response from this company. They wasted time so that I would have to pay more. They took apart items that could fit thru the door way with no problem. They moved slow and complained about the size of my furniture when they thought I couldn't hear them. The company sent a small truck which wasn't packed properly(I asked for something to move a 2bd place. They left items I asked them to take. I asked could they move my larger tv on the phone it was yes. In person they said they could but didn't have anything to secure the tv with and could not guarantee it wouldn't be damaged. I have pictures and email proof the company damaged my belongings and only replied once to say they would be in touch. To date still no reply! read more

BEWARE. DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY. This company also operates under the name of Armstrong Movers. One of the worst moving companies that I have ever dealt with. The day before my scheduled move (I was moving everything to both short term and long term storage), I was told that I needed to pay 100% of the job upfront. I ended up speaking to the owner, Billy, who stated that if I did not pay the estimate in full, my move would be cancelled. I was in a bind, so I paid. Apparently, Billy is fully aware that if he doesn't get his money in advance, he never will. The move was an utter disaster that I overpaid for and never received a dime back. For that matter, he never returned any one of my numerous voicemails requesting a call back. The 2 day move- Saturday packing, Sunday moving to storage turned into a 4 day move. The storage facility was recommended by him. The mgr and staff know him by name. (Btw It is a terrific storage facility called Storage Central). The day of packing , the men showed up without ANY materials whatsoever. I had stated to Billy to come prepared with everything that they would need, just so we wouldn't run out. For 3 1/2 days , my sister and I provided 100% of the materials. I don't even have the energy needed to describe the packing. At 4:30 on day 3, a new guy showed up with just a couple rolls of tape The breaking down of furniture. I am pretty sure that there are items that I won't be able to locate the hardware for. My kitchen table , for example, had hardware scattered on a chair, on a counter and in a pile of garbage on my kitchen floor. While one of the movers was disassembling the table, he asked for a screwdriver. When I came back, he was using the blade tip of my $100 Henkel knife. Different crew members coming and going. (There was a core crew that I will compliment in a moment) Truck goes to storage (And I still have quite a bit still unpacked in my house) Storage is closed on Sunday. The mgr at the storage facility says that Billy is fully aware of that and he knows to call her cell. That did not happen. Now, Billy waits till Monday. Things aren't going well in the house. I don't like the way things are getting packed. My sister and I stayed up every night packing. Things are put into storage without any protection. My hand tufted wool runner is used as padding for a trunk. There are parts of the house and outside garage and patio that haven't even been looked at, yet less packed. Anyway, it's a nightmare. Time ticks on. Billy wants the truck for another job. I put my foot down. He shows up at the 11th hour to build crates for my limestone tabletops. He brings yet another crew member. I am told that he is rumored to be a drug addict. My sister says he can't hit a nail with a hammer, Billy had to take over. Guys shooed him away from where they knew our belongings were in the bedroom closet. Crew. If it weren't for the CORE crew. These guys stated that they were finishing the job FOR ME. I was told ,that as the 3 men were standing with me in an upstairs room, that they were not getting paid for this time. WHAT!!??!! None of the 3 were on the clock!!! If it weren't for these 3 men , I don't know what I would have done. There were a bunch of other guys who came for a couple of hours on different days- some good, some really bad- without any respect for my belongings. But these 3 guys really made sure that my house got moved. 2 of the 3 quit after the move was complete because of the way this move was handled. One of the crew met me at storage ON TIME, while the rest of the crew was down the street at the office meeting with the owner. He was there for an hour and forty five minutes that he did not get paid for. Crew came and went at the storage facility. It was raining. My unprotected furniture was getting wet. You get the point. When I go to retrieve my short term belongings, I have to get them from different units bc (even though it had discussed several times) short term and long term got commingled. Billy is the most unethical businessman that I have ever seen . He is a crook who could care less about his customers (or his employees). Beware of this company. Movers came and packed most of my furniture into a truck that was too small. They kept trying to leave and they were not finished. It was 5-6 pm​ when they said they had to leave because they had another move to start. I said no, they had to finish. Then they pulled a fast one. Said they had to store my furniture in the truck overnight, but it would cost me $180. I simply didn't know what to do...no one was responding from the office. I paid for​ them. They arrived the next day but charged me a few hundred to release my furniture. I tried​​ the office​ multiple times but they must have blocked my calls. So, then everything was in my new home, they broke my office table and left my washing machine and dryer for me to hook up and my bed was left in pieces. I have never been through anything like this. They are not affiliated with BBB and I can't find them on social media. I guess it's small claims court. read more

Hired this company to help move our storage unit into our house (moved from out of state, and put everything in storage). Told me they would be at the unit at 2pm, and at 230pm, they were a no show. I called and was told to come back at 4pm, that they were running behind. Sure, no problem. I returned at 4pm, and at 430pm, still a no show. I called again and apparently the crew was 10 minutes out. Its now after 5 and they are nowhere to be seen. Called again and said, they are 15 minutes out. Wait...how were they 10 minutes away almost 45 minutes ago, and now are further out? I was livid. Finally, they show up at about 530pm. They didnt make it to my house to unload until 930pm that night. Then we had to unload! Luckily there were four of us to help the three guys unload into our garage and it took an hour. Disappointed that no one ever called to update me on when they were coming (I had to call every time). They didnt call after the move to see how things went or what my thought was. Didn't offer a discount or anything for the inconvenience of arriving 3.5 hours late. I personally would not use them again and would caution against using them unless you have extra time to spare. read more

Movers were late - said the truck broke down. I got no phone call and had to call them several times to make sure they were coming that day. The movers themselves were very nice but they rushed and wrapped nothing. I have lots of damage to my stuff. And when I asked the company to compensate me, they gave me a token amount after over a month of phone calls asking them about it. They never call or show up when they say they will.
