Based on my experience, any proactive issues you can take to avoid any water issues is money well spent. I love how they work with you to stay in your budget but help you to track issues you may see in the future. In our situation, we have a gutter issue that showed up when we had the recent monsoon rain. We're going to fix our gutters (clean them out) but will track a second issue (we also have an issue with the volume of our 2nd floor gutter pours onto our garage roof as the 2nd floor and the garage roof gutter handle the same volume of water which means that if we max out the 2nd floor gutter, the garage roof gutter will be overflowing). They also pointed out that they can fix issues with our porch setting (a common issue given that NC builder often throw all their trash under the porch then bury the trash when they finish their construction). There is an easy fix for that issue. Also, they can fix an issue with our cement driveway slab tilting though it is more expensive given the size of the slab. We'll address this later.

So pleasantly surprised. My wife and I live in Raleigh, NC and needed immediate inspection of the…read morefloor, sub-floor and joist system. Residential Contractor assistance in the current Raleigh building boom is suspect, at best so, honestly, I was still suspect. Tar Heel Basement scheduled me, but I'd called back needing next day inspection in attempt to fix a tile issue. No problem, they'd said.. so they sent someone from their other operation to support me. Me! Thank you Tar Heel Basement Systems, for focusing on the customer and building a capable brand. Tar Heel Basement Systems representative met me onsite and we reviewed the area. He not only looked at the area in that part of the house, but advised me on my crawlspace and the other floors in the house. I could not have been more impressed. In the end, the gentleman said, "Sir, you're in good shape here, you have a clean bill-of-health". Perfectly done - Thanks Tar Heel, for your professionalism and swift support. Had this been my own General Contractor, or one of the many subs... well, I have no doubt that I would have instead been quoted a large-sum. Thank you, Tar Heel Basement Systems. Professional. Realistic. Honest. Ethical.

First of all, Ed Hall (president of Carolina Structures) sent me an email threatening that his…read moreattorney will be on the lookout for any review that may entail "defamation of character". If the fact that the man feels the need to threaten legal action to scare someone into not leaving an honest review isn't enough to warn you about doing business with Ed and Carolina Structures, then keep reading. To Ed's attorney: if you're reading this, please be aware that I have a record of every communication I had with Ed - and I provided Ed with proof of everything I'm claiming here - so I would suggest you have him forward that to you. I have also filed a complaint with the NC Attorney General's Consumer Protection division. It's possible that Ed will retaliate by refusing to return the $3000 he agreed to return, but he's essentially doing that already, anyway, so I might as well tell my story so that people don't make the same mistake I made and agree to work with Carolina Structures. As of the posting of this review, it has been more than 2 months since Ed took my $3000 check and agreed to do the job. He claimed the check was to "put [me] on the schedule". Initially, it was supposed to be 3-4 weeks after he took my deposit. Then it was 5 weeks, then 6, and then Thanksgiving came up and it was almost 8 weeks. During this time, I had to contact him for updates since he would simply let these nebulous deadlines go by without communicating with me. When I pushed the issue of his frequent delays and poor communication, he sent me an email that said "due to conflicting differences I feel it's best we part ways. I have put in to have a refund for the deposit of $3000. It will be mailed back to you to the address on the invoice. Sorry it could not work out. You will be receiving a check soon." I offered to pick it up and he responded with "[w]ill be within the next 2 weeks. And it will be mailed." It's unclear why he's having trouble writing the check, but it's been more than 2 weeks since he first said I would be receiving it "soon". He recently sent me a text saying it would be another week. No story or excuse about why he couldn't have done it this week (or last week, for that matter). He followed this up with "I will no longer respond to you". You can imagine how much faith I have that I will be getting my money back without a legal fight, let alone before 2018. I recommend avoiding Ed Hall and Carolina Structures altogether. If you decide to use them, however, I highly recommend that you not pay them anything until Ed actually starts the job. I also suggest that you record every conversation you have with Ed, as my experience was that he may "forget" he said certain things and/or may tell you outright that he said something he didn't. For example, he claims he told me the deposit was non-refundable, which he never did. No reputable company needs 50% or more down just to put you on the schedule, in my opinion. This is not the first time he's done this; check the other reviews, it's a pattern. I was lucky that the "invoice" he tried to get me to sign was never correct. He initially charged more than he agreed to when I gave him the deposit and he kept "forgetting" to add items to the invoice that were part of the job. Because of this, I never did sign it. Even though he never mentioned it to me (or to others, apparently), the invoice does say the deposit is non-refundable. So be aware that once you do sign an invoice/contract with Carolina Structures, you may very well be agreeing to forfeit the, even if they never do the job. Ed told me: "[w]e have tons and tons of happy customers and will offer at anytime [to] give their names and phone numbers to those that need them to confirm". When I asked for the contact information of these customers, it was never provided. He did mention by name a couple of big customers (one was a car dealership, I think), but he appeared unable or unwilling to provide me with contact information for customers with smaller jobs, similar to mine. I don't think Ed is necessarily a dishonest guy. I'm guessing he is a decent foreman and probably knows his stuff. He may have eventually done the job if I hadn't gotten tired of his constant excuses. I am of the opinion that he's just not good at managing his business. I would not be surprised to learn that he overcommitted himself and after some comments he made about how small my job was, I feel like he may have kept pushing me off to fit in bigger, more profitable jobs. I have no proof of that, it's just a guess based on things he said to me and that he failed to do such a simple job within 2 months. Carolina Structures probably has at least some satisfied customers. The question is whether or not you want to risk being one of those that have to fight to get their money back when Carolina Structures doesn't do the job. There are other folks out there who will do just as good a job for around the same price, so I don't know why you'd risk it.

We hired George "Ed" Hall and one of his companies (Carolina Structures) last November and signed a…read morecontract to have concrete driveway and foundation/pad completed for our backyard garage expansion. We made the mistake of not doing research on him or his many companies before hiring him-- we saw that he at the time had 2 locations (Knightdale, Fuquay, but the Knightdale location has since closed down), and felt like we could trust someone with an actual location. He takes deposits from people in order to "get you on the schedule", so we foolishly handed over a check for $6,000. After months of him not showing up when scheduled, going days and weeks without answering calls/texts, making multiple excuses as to why he can't complete the job, he then eventually refused to do the job, and has not returned our deposit. Six months later, we have a mess of a yard, and no concrete job completed. In May, we filed a small claims case against him, and had him personally served with the court summons at his residence. He didn't show up to court, but sent an attorney on his behalf. It didn't take the Judge much time to hear our case and rule in our favor. We were awarded our judgement, plus additional damages, plus court costs and interest. (He has yet to pay as of the date of this post.) He has had several past lawsuits brought against him and his current AND former company names. Some suits were similar to ours, with similar stories of money/deposits collected by Ed and work never completed. Other lawsuits are on file with Wake County Courts, and they are open to public. All of them resulted in judgments won against Ed hall or his businesses, but he declared bankruptcy for one of his former companies-- resulting in being able to discharge some or all of the judgments that he had accumulated under his business named, Titan Concrete. Since the finalizing of that bankruptcy, he has advertised under several other business names, but operating similar types of business. His name is George Edward Hall, but goes by a few different variations of his name. His current and former businesses/ Advertised business names are: Carolina Structures Carolina Structures and Concrete Kahuna Concrete Kahuna Concrete and Landscaping Carolina Cabins and Barns Carolina Buildings Carolina Builders Titan Concrete Titan Outdoor Impressions His Office/Sales manager is Pat Roberts, or Patricia Roberts. She is the one who sent us quotes for a garage and concrete work, and she was the one who signed our contract of behalf of Carolina Structures. She also advertises on Facebook, FB marketplace on behalf of the company(ies) she works under with Ed. You can view/obtain info on his many reviews/complaints: BBB (Carolina Structures, Kahuna Concrete) Yelp Google Facebook pages-- (2 different pages for Carolina Structures, 1 page for Kahuna Concrete) Wake County Courts NC State Attorney General NC Secretary of State Wake County Sheriff's Office PACER He advertises a lot on Facebook-- Marketplace, Community information pages, For Sale pages, etc. many places around NC-- from the Raleigh area to Wilmington and in between. He also advertises on craigslist, USA All Ads, and other "classified" pages on the internet. He advertises for: Concrete, stamped concrete, pavers, custom built garages, manufactured garages, landscaping, playsets, cabins, barns, patios, driveways, etc. He also advertises as Licensed, Certified, Insured, and that he follows all NC laws for contractors. -He is NOT a Licensed Contractor for NC as of the date of this write up. -I have checked with the places he says he is certified with, and they DO NOT have a valid certification for him on record as of the date of this write up. (World of Concrete, American Concrete Institute) -He NEVER produced his business insurance even after asking him repeatedly for it. I've personally spoken with several people who have had a similar experience with him and his companies. Do business with Ed Hall or his companies at your own risk.
