Bought a Pumie pumice stone here for $3.98 and I later saw the same product at Home Depot across the parking lot for $1.98 so I brought it back in to return. "Vanessa" clerked both transactions. I told her it was half that price at HD and she refunded me $1.64, which was half of $3 plus tax, not half of $4 plus tax. It should have been l$2.18. When I noted the obvious discrepancy, saying the difference was actually over $2, Vanessa told me that I was being rude. I told her no one was being rude, but I could do basic math, and 4÷2 was two. She said "You needed to stop talking now!" I told her I didn't and wouldn't, and she said "I will not help you then!"and she called up an associate, Alejandro, who refunded me the correct amount. read more

The worst customer service ever, rude staff. When I finally got to the cashier, he was turned around bsing with a co worker, ok cool. But when I asked if they had dehydrated eggs, he acted like I was interrupting them & rudely said "oh, hi how are you? I'm good thanks". And then proceeded to patronize me. Then, the lady who was ringing us up didn't realize I only had one item, when I said "oh it's just this" she was extremely rude & said "well why didn't you say anything?" Umm, I did. She rang up 2 items that weren't mine and acted like the world ended. After I walked out she continued talking about me to the next person in line. Definitely won't be back. Hopefully management can re train their employees to be a little more courteous. read more

I used to be a fan, but as time goes by, I'm less and less impressed with the store. Some good deals can be had, but it's obvious that they don't care a lot about customer safety or health. The chain has been sued by the state over potentially high lead content in their store brand of candied ginger, yet they still carry it. (Yes--I pointed this out to store management, who assured me they'd take it off the shelves--yet they didn't.) During my last visit, the conveyor belt at the checkout had puddles of what looked like milk and gawd knows what else, and rather than clean it up, the checker (first initial "J") dragged my purchases through the liquid. This is like GroceOut ( Grocery Outlet) meets Safeway. It isn't as big as Safeway, but bigger than GroceOut. And the selections are better than GroceOut and cheaper than Safeway. I kind of like this place. My Sister likes this place. My Mom likes this place. It doesn't seem as crowded as those places, either. It has all the things you have come to expect from Smart and Final (like a variety of anti-sustainable but cheap plain paper, plastic, or styrofoam cups and plates), but has more Produce and some other things than your average Smart and Final. So if your just Dumb and Starting, you could go get GroceOut. Or you can take the Safeway. OR, this is a good place to start your grocery shopping, and perhaps, in time, it will become, your Smart and Final. read more

Honestly a pretty great place to get bulk goods, especially if you like good deals on meat. Not all the prices are necessarily super-cheap to the extent that you might find on sale at Grocery Outlet, but Smart and Final consistently has good prices on most goods. You're probably not going to find a lot of higher-end brand names here (though they do have some solid options like the Clover brand milk), but that's fine because you can pay $3.50 for an oversized jumbo bag of tortilla chips and $5 for a whole jug of salsa instead. The fresh fruits and veggies aren't the best quality or price, but the bulk and canned options make up for that. It's a good place to load up if you don't have a Costco membership. The store does seem a bit understaffed and thus the workers are a bit more harried than they might be otherwise, but most of the cashiers have been great. The parking lot is strewn with shopping carts, but it's not nearly as tight a fit as, say, the Trader Joe's lots. Do be aware that there is a gentleman who likes to stand unmasked outside the front doors and blow smoke in your face as you walk out. read more

What a horrible shopping experience I had. There were 7 people in one line. This store has no idea what customer service is. Floors were filthy, no one was wearing a name tag. They wouldn't let me use the bathroom. There were a lot of spaces on the shelf. I usually shop somewhere else but was close to this store "what a disappointment". If they weren't the cheapest in the area, I doubt I'd come back as often as I do. As a long time customer, I saw the store before the remodel and expansion. I don't know how they did it...... but they made a Bigger store feel More Cramped. The registers are so close together, the lines feeding into and exiting from the area are Always a blood clot of people. Those people have to stand where they are to go through the check out. and the employees have to walk down the "aisle" where people are now self-bagging groceries. It doesn't help that the cooler with bagged ice is right there Along with seasonal /promotional Impulse-buy displays. I bet if someone actually Measured, Smart & Final would FAIL AT ADA COMPLIANCE. Wheelchairs must be a nightmare in this place. The aisles near the Bins of loose grains and the baking products would likely also FAIL ADA COMPLIANCE STANDARDS. The carts don't seem to be very well maintained. Rickety, squeaky wheels. The produce department is a joke given the area we live in. This is the Salad Bowl of California. I have given up on ever buying fresh garlic or carrots from Smart & Final. Once when I mentioned this to the man working in the produce department, his response was completely forgettable- his attitude was not. It felt like my comment was the biggest annoyance of his day. He could not care less. Thankfully, I don't think he lasted very long. There are a couple of the female employees who do seem to Care Very Much about the job they do. I really should find out their names and Compliment them to management. They help make it tolerable when the lines get too long.... It is still not fun to be headed with a cart full of groceries down the freezer aisle and the CENTER is FULL of Pallets of Product. The aisles are so narrow 75% of the time I shop at S&F, there is NOT Enough Room for Two Carts ! Once, this caused a fight between my S.O. and I ! !! Seriously, overcrowded aisles and other customers were trying to get by- instead of moving 10 ft further to grab a bag of frozen spinach, we had to Back Our Cart Up -full reverse walking because there was ZERO way to turn the cart around...... we had go down the soda aisle to come Back Around the corner. If you're confused by my description, I'm not surprised. It is frustrating to see the product you want, and with out a Go-Go-Gadget-Arm, you've got to circle back around. Instead of 3 steps forward, go 50 steps . And the cart is highly likely to be full. Because the store design funnels you through the path they want. You end up in the freezer area at the end. Makes sense that all the cold stuff isn't what you grab first. I do appreciate the thought they put into the store design in that respect. Less time for melting is Good. I just wish they didn't clutter up all the walk ways with pallets and stacks of products. It takes away from the overall shopping experience.... read more

I've shopped on and off here for years. Yesterday I went to get some things after a visit to Home Depot. Great prices, well stocked store, beautiful vegetables. Everything was neat and orderly. Employees were super helpful and nice. They actually smiled at people. Amazing! But what really impressed me was the bathroom. I took a picture. It smelled clean. It was extremely clean. Everything fully stocked from toilet seat covers, toilet paper, soap etc. No trash on the floor and the waste bin had things it but it was clean too. Fantabulous!! I will shop here more often. The managers are very unprofessional & they also took my review down. I wrote a long paragraph but, I guess Fernando or any of the garbage managers there are offended, I called them garbage. They fired all the good & hard working employees, then act like their treatment towards others is normal & okay, when they constantly put employees down. This place absolutely sucks & they will continue to have a now hiring sign up because they continue to have terrible management issues. If this gets taken down, I won't be surprised. This one is about the check-out portion for its repeatedly chaotic, frustrating, and rude interactions; but, more importantly, this is for the management, if not the higher/corporate level of management actually. A typical shopping experience goes like this: You get there for their competitive prices, especially in the produce section. You are ready to check out and of course either a. there are not enough opening lanes, or b. the cashiers don't seem to be trained adequately. Maria used to the the best cashier, who was accurate and polite, but probably left. Many are not trained or could be rude. A couple of years ago, a taller manager-looking female was always there and eager to help. Apparently she, and a couple of helpful and pleasant others, may have left as well. Lately, things continue to go down hill. One cashier (or sometimes stocker) Nick continues to mumble to himself and comment on customers' shopping and totals; another person, when asked to refund the price difference, just couldn't get it right. A brief recap to be fair regarding the second scenario: customer over-charged $4 for scanning the non-sale price labelled of $11 even though the package price is "you pay $7" as total; the customer was erroneously refunded $3 because, according to the cashier's logic, the package said "you save $3 so I gave you $3 back." Took me the customer twice to approach the cashier's to get my correct refund total of $4. You never get a "sorry." This is unfortunately typical, meaning you need to be frantically check your receipt before you leave the store. Each time I need to go there, I will have convince myself if I have the extra time and energy to deal with this kind of things. Nick needs to be retrained, counseled, or replaced; the second cashier, whose logic is correct, but screwed by your store's computer system. My point is simple; please, please train your employees or give them time to learn before going live, especially for a high-traffic setup without a service counter like your seaside store. I so wanted to give this store 5 stars for its efforts in offering competitive pricing groceries. read more

I go there for a few items but not every week. They have their niche. I don't like it that they spray their vegetables with water to keep them fresh because then they will rot faster. I don't know why they set it up that way when they remodeled. I do like their alfa alfa sprouts. Sometimes I get mushrooms, chick peas some party stuff, kitchen tools etc, just items that I don't need on a regular basis and that are hard to find in other stores at that quality. read more

Finally getting used to the new layout and all the new employees. Some of them have really helped me out and sometimes turn their right cheek when they see me climbing the shelves to grab something or a case of napkins 10 feet above my head. The staff is very patient even though their customer are not. How do I know? I'm in here at least 3 times a week and I see some crazies in line and the staff just suck it up and smile. I have never been into Smart & Final prior to a few days ago. Wow! I am blown away. They have so much miscellaneous stuff. I love cleaning and I love cleaning product and this place was a treasure trove of industrial grade and industrial only cleaning products. Do you know that they make Windex with vinegar? it takes just a few swipes to clean your windows and mirrors with this stuff. I didn't have much time, but I will be back to peruse the aisles. Don't be tricked by their Sriacha though. It was not the same as the brand with the green lid. read more

After three straight weeks of Target not being able to stock anything in their grocery, I decided to give Smart and Final a try. I am glad I did. I spent about the same amount of money as I would with Target. But, I found a greater selection, and it was a shorter drive for me. Checkout was prompt and courteous. I will give it another try next week, and hopefully Smart and Final will become my stock up location. read more

Called this morning because I needed a large quantity of an item for work. The man who answered the phone said they had it in stock. When I asked if they had the specific amount I needed, his reply was "well we just got a truck today so the shelf is full." When I again told him I needed a very large quantity and asked him to make sure they had it, he put me on hold and then transferred my call to someone else. This time, a woman answered and assured me they had it, even in my large quantity. So I drive from Castroville to make my purchase, and guess what? Nowhere near the amount I needed stocked on the floor. So I ask for assistance, and I really regret not getting a name, because I recognized the voice and it was the same woman I spoke to on the phone! She then tells me that they're expecting my item delivered today at 1pm. I had called at 7am. And then she informs me that even with the delivery, it's not going to be the amount that I had asked for. I doubt management reads these reviews, because the majority of them are negative and have been for months now. This review could have been avoided if proper customer service had been given over the phone. Don't say that you have something in stock and then act surprised and apologetic when I'm upset because you don't. And furthermore, don't try to blame it on the shipment being late when you knew right away that you weren't even receiving the quantity requested. The shipping manifest tells you what you're receiving and the quantity before the truck even arrives. read more

I went to smart and final on May 25, 2020 around 5:30pm, I accidentally walked in without a mask, I didn't notice until I seen another person with a mask, then another person without a mask. So I thought to myself maybe it's okay, no one told him anything yet? I hurried through the store to grab what I need then I proceeded to get in line at the same time as the man without a mask who was directly in front of me. We both passed Kim as Kim ignored the older white man with no mask directly in front of her, Kim seemed to have only noticed me black woman with no mask, she proceeded to follow me and watch me hostilely repeating that I needed a mask while the white man with no mask right in front of me was peacefully being serviced, she came all the way over to tell the cashier not to service anyone without a mask but still not harassing the white man with no mask in front of me or ever telling him a word. This woman probably need to get her eyes check and start distributing her misplaced anger elsewhere, and if she's going to be the mask police....hopefully she can give everyone the same energy because it felt a little racist to me seeing as there was an unmasked white man 6 Feet away from me who wasn't being harassed by a worker....or maybe it's just a coincidence she attacked me like that, which I'm sure everyone would want to believe more.....I'll leave that there have a good day. read more
