I prefer to shop at Smart & Final when I shop for an upcoming event as I can buy items in small or large quantities in one trip. The fact that it offers weekly specials and coupons are definitely a plus. I took off a star because it is always a test of patience at checkout time. It usually has 2 cashiers, sometimes only one. I also miss the time (pre-COVID) when I can buy nuts and oatmeal by weight instead of prepackaged boxes. Maybe one day since items will be available in bulk again.

Me holding the meat I bought at the store, called Smart and final in Lake Forest

So I used to special order meat from the RSM smart and final for probably five years. My butcher retired and I tried to do it this time with a new butcher. The guy literally claimed I did not want it or something even though I called and checked on it. He said it came in and said I don't want it? It was like a total BS thing But anyway this store sometimes has it on the floor and I got lucky today so I don't know if they started carrying it again or not but at least I was able to buy meat this time. It's actually cheaper to buy this and freeze it and then you buy the ribeyes individually usually. There's an app trick you can use where you get like a 50% off your first purchase or whatever at least they used to have that I don't know if they still have that but anyway whatever I got my meat so I'm actually happy and I will go back here again instead of my old, smart and final because they literally blame me for their own mistakes

Only wanted broccolini and the broccolini was brown. Ruined dinner plans, a grocery store should not stock rotting vegetables.

Cheap prices on bulk items, restaurant supplies, and stuff you will find neither at the supermarket nor Costco.

It's…read morenormally a come and go trip with little to no interactions, but on Saturday 8/15/2026, I was highly annoyed by a worker there named David. My fiancée and I were there and wanted a bottle of Tequila that was locked in the cabinet. I left to find a worker and didn't see any so I went to self-checkout to see if the young lady there may have a had a walkie or something to help. Behind an organizer of reusable bags I could see a worker just standing there. David. The young lady asked if he could help me since she could not leave her post and he said he had a customer. He didn't. He then opted to call someone to the front who didn't come. He behaved this way all thinking I did not see him. I walked over to his checkout lane and looked directly at him to which he looked down. The young lady then came to help me as self-checkout was empty. It was fairly quick. Less than 2 minutes. She told me it'd be at the front. I know at this location, I can purchase liquor with an employee at self-checkout but I purposely went to David's lane. He couldn't say "Hello," look at us directly, or say "Thank you have a good night." while checking us out despite doing just that to the person in front of us and behind. Hmmmmmm? Interesting yes? I loudly thanked the young lady for helping us and leaving her post to do so while remarking on David not helping her or us. I wish I had asked for her name. She did not have on her name tag or it was on her pant loop. I didn't get to see it. This interaction will not stop me from going to this store necessarily, but I will not forget the interaction. To be that purposely evasive so loudly is poor work ethic and customer service.

However, I…read morefeel it's important to let other customers know to PLEASE CHECK the expiration dates before purchasing. Unfortunately, we've come across multiple expired products here. A few months ago, I noticed Cotija cheese on the back shelf that was moldy and well past its expiration date, which I immediately reported to the cashier. Then just two days ago, my son purchased bacon that turned out to be two months expired. This doesn't seem to be an isolated incident, and it appears expired items are not being removed from the shelves consistently. I hope management takes this seriously and improves their inventory checks, as this is a food safety concern.

Location is on El Toro Rd in Mission Viejo. Lots of parking on a Sunday late morning. The weekend samples lady has such a delightful personality and was announcing "sample sample!" to nearby customers. I sampled one lumpia and longanisa. Delish! My hubby also sampled a lumpia but chose tocino instead. We chit chatted w/her for a few minutes and she is actually retired from decades of working in public service. IPS is fortunate to have her on the weekends As for IPS, it is organized and clean. Doesn't have the megamarket vibe like their competitor. There is also a restaurant inside, PhilHouse and they also have a little bakery. Pleasant experience at Island Pacific!

When you enter, you will see quite a few people mingling around the Cafe area and they're probably people that visit more than once a week. Ask the staff for recommendations most of them are quite friendly. This is the only place in town that we can find Thai Basil for some of the dishes. We like to prepare at home, which is how we first discovered it. In the back you'll find an amazing amount of fresh sea food and other meats. You will especially find several types of whole fish and prawns, even some quite large ones. You can also get fresh squid to make calamari. The prices are reasonable and butchers will help either fry the food for you filet it so you only take home what you want.

Surprised this was better than Seafood City... much thicker, meatier, and also tender and moist. LA, National/Daly City level quality imo.
