Im not sure if Juan is a manager or not but he is so rude and disrespectful to his coworker. Our cashier needed help with a question and a return and Juan was so rude to him over the walkie talkie for everyone to hear. Our cashier needed help and over the walking Juan replies disrespectfully "I'm on my way dude". Once he got to the register our cashier was clearly explaining the issue and Juan answers him with such an ugly attitude "I don't understand what you want". There was a sign that said "no gift cards can be purchased at this register" and Juan said to the cashier with an attitude "well what do you think if there's only one lane open" I don't know what kind of training smart and final has for its employees but it may need to be reviewed. This is unacceptable behavior coming from a coworker especially if Juan has a managerial title. Even WORSE if he doesn't. That is no way to treat anyone. If Juan is comfortable treating someone he works with this way, I can just imagine how he treats his customers. Because of this experience Smart and Final has lost a customer at all locations. This is a decent grocery store that I've been to over a dozen times. Prices are reasonable and they sell some stuff in bulk. As far as I remember, they restocked on Tuesdays so anytime after the weekend its usually pretty empty but it's possible they changed that now. This time there was an alright amount of items in stock and was able to get what I needed. Overall not bad. read more

11/12/23 ~ @ 6:15 pm - trying to exchange 3 cokes I got because I wanted to buy the apple ciders instead. But the cashier in her 50s/60s? gave me an attitude or I would say telling us in a scolding way that we shouldn't hold the cokes and wait in line to exchange, we should tell her first and leave the cokes there and go line up. We never shop there and our first time was being scolded by a cashier instead of explaining to us their process. Well, maybe if you have an exchange service or put a sign up that we need to leave our stuffs at the cashier for exchange products first and then go line up, we would know what to do. You need to be educated that ppl have different cultures and we don't just barge in and cut the line to ask questions. She then called her manager and spoke in Spanish and then came back to us but didn't say anything and keep asking the next person in line to pass us and helping them, instead of telling us that we need to wait. I was like, she gave me attitude since the beginning and I had enough so i told her if it's to much problem we don't need to exchange it, then she said something under her breath and didn't answer me. I was like okay, then repeated it and she said we need to check the camera first. Then why didn't you explain to me that you need to check the camera first to make sure we didn't take the cokes in the store??? We paid for these, what an attitude! And at the same time we already had the apple ciders sitting there so we decided to just buy them because we had the 15% off coupon and they didn't even take 15% off and said it didn't work. Also they didn't fully refund us the right amount either. I really had enough so I just tell them, nvm with the 15% and told them they didn't refund us correctly either, and left. No wonder this store has a 2 stars, should have a 0 star. The manager was also there to help but also useless and showed no helpful attitude. Cashier that was there on Saturday 08/05/23 . Was upset because I didn't remove the items out of the small plastic basket . She told me Why didn't you take out the items out of the basket. I replied I'm sorry I didn't know i was suppose to do that. In a very sarcastic way she replied that's for next time. I told her I didn't know that it was a rule. ? Horrible SERVICE. My husband was just there at the store today not that long ago to buy a bag cooler because we are traveling out of state while I was with our kids in the car outside waiting and he went in and purchased this bag and on his way out he was already at the parking lots getting to our car when the security women from the store (don't even know what her name is) assumed my husband didn't pay for the bag and rudely confronted my husband making him feel dishonest and the way she even said it to him very rude. I myself understand that now in days theres a lot of robbering going on but for her to come out in the middle of the parking lots shouting out to my husband thinking he didnt pay just says a lot of her. When my husband even says that when he paid she (security) was right there on the front where the registers are at talking to a worker there. Clearly if she didn't see when my husband paid thats eventually her fault for not doing her part of the job and assuming when he clearly paid for it and even said he paid and even doe he said that and even showed prove of the purchase she walked away like nothing and didn't even apologize for the misunderstanding from her part. Why come out to the parking lots when clearly your job is to make sure from the inside of the store that customers pay for what they are getting or going to buy and not walk out and if someone does get them right there before they put one foot out not when they're about to get in the car or halfway already down the parking lot. We never have ever experienced something like this nor has my husband especially from this store because we come to Smart & Final a lot when we are out here visiting family and we always have good things to say and love coming out to this store when we're around. They sold me expired food. I bought two packs of Pure Leaf lemon tea for my students and found that the drink expired nearly a month ago. I also bought two packs on Mint Kit Kat and realized they expired for nearly four months. The sad thing was I did not notice this until my student finish eating one of the two packs. I've been to this Smart and Final several times as it is the closest to where I live. However, after the recent purchase, I may have to select another store. A new addition in the area after the construction of the under pass of the railroad tracks. Access to this business would be a huge challenge before. Getting to the parking lot is very simple, getting around this lot and finding a space is the hard part. The way they drew the lines for the spaces, I just don't know what they were thinking at all. As soon as I found a space I can park in, I finally made it into this place. I should have gone there a lot earlier. Like first thing it opened because every freaking family is here. Probably for the last minute SuperBowl shopping too. I went to the cold section to see if they had ice. Definitely not over here. Gave me a chance to jack someone's empty cart though. I walked down the middle aisle and still don't see a freezer/fridge that would carry ice. I looked down to where the cashiers were and figured, it must be up at the front. When I thought about it, I'm going to have to load up my own ice. It's like the traffic in the parking lot trying to get to the front where the ice box was. Most of it was gone and what was there was jammed in there. If I didn't care about my hand, I was going to break free a few wedged bags of ice. I was told by my best friend it would be cheaper here than going to the ice place or getting ice at the supermarket. I bought 80 lbs of ice for $15, awesome. Now I have to wait in line to pay for it. Wish I brought the Smart & Finals card. Don't know if I would have received a discount or something. I put the bags of ice in the car and pushed the cart back to the front since no one does that these days. People are way too lazy these days and just leave carts in the next space or grass area. That's how I get these stupid scratches on my car, right? Don't let me catch you doing that, you'd be an easy target. Rude staff. My mom and I visited recently and she was ignored multiple times when she approached staff for help. They training with basic courtesy/customer service with customers. Case in point, i tried to buy 2 packs strawberries @$1.99 ea as in the ads, but the store did not have the sale price, instead they put regular price @$3.49 ea pk. that's when i asked the cashier (Renee) why the price $3.49 not $1.99 as in ads. she said "look at there it's $3.49" (pointed to the reg price sign) then i asked to see the ads paper and finally with her 'not surprised' look "she said oh ok if you buy 2 then it's $1.99 ea", WOW!! how slicky & tricky to conduct sell that way! I've been shopping this location for years but it's time to switch. I get the impression that they don't check for expired items or rotten produce. On several occasions I've seen fruit that is rotten i.e. papayas rotted with dimpling on it, avocados black and extremely mushy, cherry tomatoes that you could see thru the container they were starting to shrivel and fruit flies in the in plastic containers of grapes and other fruit. I recently purchased a pack of single serve yogurt only to find it full of mold because the containers were all cracked and had leaked inside the package. I was also going to buy beef jerky but passed because I could clearly see inside the package it was full of mold. I've noticed this location has changed management however I've yet to see improvements with these issues. I like to shop within my community and with limited options in El Monte it's sad that this is what myself and other customers get at this location. read more

This store is very clean and has everything organized. The reason I took 1 star off was cause I have found rotten bread on the shelf and rotten meat in the fridge. (Once for each) 99 cents store (in the same shopping center) HAS BETTER PRODUCE FOR 99 cents. Canned foods are cheaper there too. Chips and utensils are cheaper as well. The prices are very competitive with target and sams club. I like the fast service you get here and the availability of items. They have a wide selection of wines and alcohol considering they are not a beverage store. The poultry department is a decent size and they have all types of meats in stock. They also have many cheeses and platters in stock. The new produce area is awesome. Although the prices are slightly higher then other places the convenience is priceless. I will definitely continue to shop here for all my bbq needs and will also come back for groceries. read more

There was an older Asian couple who clearly wasn't so advanced in their English and as Renee the cashier was ringing them up she would annoyingly yell out every direction like "move your cart over here" she yelled it a few times without giving any sort of gesture to clarify what she wanted them to do, it wasn't until some gentleman pointed at the cart and gestured where to move it. smart & final is a convenient store to pick things up in bulk if youre in a rush. i live down the street and stop by for simple necessities when im short on time. the only drawback about this place is that sometimes it gets real packed, and they dont open up new check out lines. stretching lines 5-6 guests back. my suggestion is to drive that extra 2-3 miles, pay for a membership and shop at sams club. but if youre short on time, this will do i guess. read more

I've been coming to this location for many years. They've always met my needs with the outmost professionalism, and this is why today's stop was so shocking. I witnessed the manager being rude to a person trying to better themselves. The man was looking for a job application and when the manager was called to assist she barely gave him the time of day and walked away with attitude leaving the person of interest confused. I didn't catch a name tag but she is short with blonde hair with brown highlights. The poor man was just left there uncared for with employees just starring at him not knowing what else to tell him about the managers behavior. If this is how management has become perhaps they should better train their staff on professionalism and customer service as this was done in front of a customer- myself, and other customers. I usually shop here because is close to me and I avoid the driving my trip here is mainly for water and milk but a visit ago while being in a hurry I did not check the expiration date on the milk it was expired 1 week .I didn't make a big deal it happens I guess But the second Visit (this time I checked the date) most if not all were expired I had to get a different brand long story short I always buy milk here and every time I tell the cashiers about the expire milk they never do anything about it! There is one girl who has an RBF (resting bitch face) and as soon as I walked in and asked if they had any carts available (in the nicest tone possible) she turned around away From me and pointed backwards and said they're outside.
