I tried Small's Pizza at Springdale General this weekend and ended up having a really nice experience. They serve New Haven style pizza, which is extremely thin crust. Think almost cracker-like as opposed to crispy outside/chewy inside like a New York pizza. The tomato sauce had a slightly tangy flavor that worked well with the thin crust. We ordered a half cheese, half vodka pie. The vodka side is the one with the pepper on it in the picture. Both were really good and kid approved, which is always the real test ;) You order at the counter, and they take your phone number and text you when your food is ready. We ended up wandering around Springdale General and checking out a few of the little shops while we waited. It was about a 30 minute wait on a Saturday around 6 pm. When we came back to the shared seating area they actually brought the pizza and salad directly to our table even though we didn't have a table number or anything. I'm not sure if that's standard or if they just recognized us from ordering, but it was a really thoughtful touch. You're eating off paper plates with plastic utensils, so very casual experience. It feels like the kind of place where you could grab takeout or bring kids. We also ordered the Little Gem salad. It was a good size and easily split between two adults and two kids. I was also impressed with the beer and wine selection. I didn't notice any NA beer in the display case, although the menu mentioned Athletic Lite. The dining setup at Springdale General is shared with a few other places including a sushi place, The Front Page bar, and Medici Coffee. The space was pretty packed when we went. Both trash stations were completely overflowing. It was honestly a balancing act to get our plates in there. Since it's a shared dining area I don't think that falls directly on Smalls, but whoever manages the space probably needs to keep a closer eye on it. Also, for a casual place, they didn't offer self-serve soda. They give you plastic cups and you can refill water at a water fountain down the hall by the bathrooms. I'm giving it 4 out of 5 stars. New Haven style pizza is extremely thin and crisp, and the crust almost eats like a cracker. Personally I still lean toward a New York or New Jersey style with more chew, but I tried to rate this based on the experience and the quality of what they're aiming to do, not my personal preference of New York over New Haven. Austin already has a lot of great pizza, so I'm not sure how often I'd go back, but I'm glad a place is bringing New Haven style into the mix. read more

Ordered online, got the vodka pie add pepperoni. Crust was crisp all the way to the center. Just enough sauce. Pepperoni cupped a little bit. Super solid pie. They're also doing bagels on weekend mornings now and I haven't gotten a chance to try them but I'm planning on going this Sunday. Will update if/when I do. I ordered online so I can't speak much on the service, but the girl at the counter was friendly enough. It's inside Springdale general, and they sell individual slices so I feel like it's a decent place to go on your lunch break. It is loud in there though, just because of the way the building is designed. read more

We came to smalls for the bagels. We tried the tomato bagel and it was amazing!! A great amount of cream cheese, and the tomato was delicious. A decent alternative to the Apollo Bagels tomato bagel, which still has a place in my heart but this will hold me over until I get back to New York! read more

Came here for the bagels and then back the same night for pizza - both are excellent! I do think the best bagels I've had in Austin so far and the pizza is delicious. It's located in a super cool complex with other local shops and a ton of parking. Also ample seating! Definitely recommend. read more

We called ahead to order and walked over to pick up from Small's. Ordered the special of the week (pepperoni, cherry peppers, and red onion), and a cheese. Both pizzas were cooked with that perfect amount of char that we love on pizza. The crust is so good. The toppings were good, but not overly flavorful. I love that this pizza shop is in Springdale general. After an afternoon of shopping, I can pop by and grab a slice (or 3!) or order a whole pie and bring it home. Service is relatively fast. I've tried the pepperoni and Slice of the week, which was sausage and green bell peppers. Both were super tasty! I like that it's a thinner crust and the sauce is great. I also recently tried their bagels on the weekends. I tried the everything bagels and the lox bagel. Personally I find the bagels to be a bit tough. They are pretty good but I'm still in the hunt for NY-level bagels. Service is quick and they are always super nice. read more

First of all, I've been on a crazed search for the best pizza in the Austin metro area. Of the 20 or so top spots I've tried, this took the crown of best pizza in Austin. We tried 3 pizzas to cover our bases. First off, the Tomato Pie with Pepperoni. Amazing. It had the perfect level of acidity to cut through the savory and meaty pepperoni. Perfect levels of seasoning and actual depth/flavor to the sauce. Second, the Vodka Pie was probably the best cheese pizza adjacent pie I've had in town. Complexity and rich cheesy flavor with amazing seasoning to make a perfectly cohesive pie. Third, the innovative and wonderfully creamy, buttery, savory Mashed Potato Pie. A novel blend of textures and flavors without being overbearing. To top it all off, the service was amazing too. The cashier/server with the pretty, colorful hair was very nice and accomodating. They brought out the pizzas for us and brought all the accoutrements we would need promptly. This plaza is one of our favorites with other awesome spots like Uroko/Tonari. It is, however, a shared space with clientele of other stores and such. That being said, the open space and seating was actually very nice. I'm from NYC and a bit of a pizza snob, and after trying just about every pizza spot in and around Austin, this place is by far my favorite. The pies are fairly priced, the location is great, and the service is stellar. The sauce is perfectly seasoned, and the crust is beautifully crispy. I don't do floppy slices--no thanks. Smalls is the real deal. It's also a great solo date spot: a pie and a glass of wine is the perfect way to spend a night. read more

Not exact fresh but still great- almost similar with Home Slice's NY style pizza but thinner and tangy tomato sauce which distinguished it as New Haven style. Excellent pizza, crust is (chefs kiss) and sauce is not too heavy. Their specialty this week had mushroom and it was good mushrooms not the cheap flavorless ones like most pizza places do. Also the location it's at is very cool open seating with other restaurants and bars so you can grab some good beers/cocktails while you eat. read more
