I decided to stop by Smallcakes in Western Springs on my way home from work, and I'm so glad I did! From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by an incredibly sweet and helpful staff member. I especially liked how the displays showcased the cupcakes like little pieces of art. I was also surprised to see they also offer a variety of cake pops, ice creams, custom-made cakes, and chocolates. For my purchase I chose the red velvet cupcake, chocolate sundae cupcake, pink vanilla cupcake, and strawberry cupcake which all tasted great! I ordered cake pops a week and I specifying I wanted pastel colors instead I got with white and black icing with colored sprinkles for the amount of money I paid if I had known that they were not going to give me what I wanted I would've elsewhere now this is the second time I've gone here. First time I ordered it and when I came to pick it up. They were not done so I had to wait 45 minutes for the order to be finished. It's always exciting when new things open in town, and Smallcakes is a great place to take care of a sweet tooth craving. This adorable cupcakery just opened up in Garden Market (by Great American Bagel and Subway). This little shop had its grand opening on the 2nd and since it was the weekend I thought I would stop on by and try it out. First off, the decor in Smallcakes is chic and girly - as there a lot of pink (my favorite is the pink ottoman). The set up of the display counter is well thought out - you can see all the cupcake designs as well as the names of them clearly through the glass. There is a wide variety of flavors of cupcakes which is great - but also makes it harder in my opinion because everything looks so darn good. However, my main concern was they look great - but do they taste great? I ordered a few, The Boston Cream Pie and the Wedding Cake to sample and a few others (which I gave to my parents). The Boston Cream Pie cupcake was amazing, the base is a vanilla cake with a Bavarian cream filling and then a nice chocolate fudge frosting on top accompanied with a dollop of that Bavarian cream on top. The cupcake was fluffy and it held it's moisture so it tasted fresh with that Bavarian cream filling in the middle. The great thing about this cupcake in particular was that it did not feel too heavy and was not too sweet either like cupcakes can be sometimes. The other cupcake I tried was the Wedding Cake - I was excited about this one because I was told it was a top seller - however, it was not my favorite. The base of this cake is an almond cake, with a almond buttercream on top. It is simple and the cupcake itself is simply decorated. Again, the cake itself held its own and was absolutely delicious. Sadly for me, the buttercream on this cake was just too much which to me if I had eaten the whole thing with all that frosting would have been very heavy and very sugary - almost comparable to a Sprinkles Cupcake. A quick side note is that the cupcakes are $3.75 for a single one which is the same pricing if you go downtown to Sprinkles. However, I would go back to try the other flavors they have since they do carry many different flavors daily. read more

Very disappointed. I was specifically looking for a "tear-away" cake. Which on the outside looks like a whole cake but is made up of cupcakes all covered with a frosting to look like a sheet cake. I was assured they could handle the order. This was ordered for a colleagues retirement party. I arrive to pick up the cake and it is 28 cupcakes in a box with the wording written on the cardboard.$98 for this and now I will have the embarrassment of bringing this to a longtime colleagues party. When I questioned it at pickup I was told the baker said it would be "too much frosting". They should have told me they don't make tear-away cakes. Just lost a customer. read more

When we visited friends while out-of-town, we picked up Smallcakes as a host/hostess gift & were even able to add a PupCake for their new dog. I really do like this place. I think it's a great addition to Western Springs. It was difficult for me to give this business a lower score. My issue is with the staff not wearing gloves or using utensils while serving their newest addition - Smash Cakes. I was really mortified by the girl manhandling the cupcake and ice cream with her bare hands. It was completely unsanitary. She didn't wash her hands before she cut my cupcake in half. Then I saw her take half the cupcake with her full bare hand and smash it in the cup with the ice cream. She then scooped some of the ice cream that wouldn't come off the scooper with her fingers. She then grabbed the rest of the cupcake with her bare hand and pushed it on top of the ice cream. It's really important for businesses to not use their bare hands when exposed to ready to eat food. They are not mandated to wear gloves but they are required to use a utensil like tongs, spatulas, etc., when handling food. I hope the owners will read this review and invest in some device that will prevent their employees from directly touching customers food. It's unsanitary and unhealthy. This is the only beef I have with this business. I've been in here a number of times and would have rated it a 5 if not for this important issue. I'll give this business another shot hoping they'll make the necessary change. read more

Small Cakes did a great job on the cake for my daughters birthday. Not going to lie i was a little nervous at how it was going to turn out, but we loved it! I was recommended here by a family member who lives by the Naperville location and has been ordering their cakes from that location. I walked in and placed a cake order a month before. The man who took my order name is Bill. I told him I wanted the cake to look like a record player and I sent him a picture to reference. He wrote it all down on the invoice and told me he was going to throw in some cupcakes. A couple of weeks before the pick up date, I received a text and then a call to confirm what I wanted. I was a bit confused since he wrote it all down on the invoice that I didn't even get a copy. The day of the cake pick up, I called the bakery to let them know someone was going on my behalf to pick up the cake, when I asked to revert back to me my order, it was completely different, I then told her the correct order and she then agreed. I can honestly said that when I saw this cake I was in shock and completely disappointed. The cake looked like it was done by some HS kids and the happy birthday sign looked like crap, and there were no cupcakes. This was my first time trying this place, since I heard highly reviews.
