The cupcakes are pretty good and when I took my family they were raving about the cupcakes as well and were fans of the items they purchased. Now that I'm older its a bit to sugary for me. I took two stars off because they are inconsistent when it comes to the hours and operation of the restaurant. When I looked on Google, it said that the store was opened. I drive up there today and see a store that looks empty on the inside with no cakes displayed and the lights off with a mop bucket in the center of the floor. Then I see a sign that they have closed this location and have moved. The young girl was very friendly and knew probably that they are hard but thought it was because they had been frozen. She said they were making me a new one and went to the back to get it. It is the hardest thing to not show up here everyday when they first open to grab cupcakes. My family and I never get tired of them and this sets the standard for what cupcakes should be. The bread is ALWAYS soft and moist. They make all of theirs homemade and you can tell by the flavor. My go to cupcake is the wedding cake, pink vanilla and the amazing hot fudge sundae. The cupcakes are good, it's moist and not too sweet. The frosting is VERY Decadent and sweet! The unfortunate part of the different flavors is that they use the same base cupcake(vanilla and chocolate) and change the frosting. I was hoping the lemon drop would be a lemon cake...nope just a normal vanilla...same for the salted caramel and wedding cake. The cookies and cream and peanut butter crunch..both just chocolate cake. The strawberry and relief were the only other "flavored" cake, which were good! Hmmm...I'm trying to think of a reason not to give Smallcakes 5 stars and so far, I haven't come up with anything yet. Yesterday, I found myself in a not so good mood and by the afternoon, I developed a serious craving for something sweet. I have been following Smallcakes on Facebook with every intention of visiting since they opened. Well, I just so happened to be scrolling down my Facebook timeline and saw a post about brown sugar peach & bourbon ice cream. And that, my friends, is when I knew it was time to stop in Annapolis on my way home from work to get a sweet pick me up. Upon entering the store, I was greeted by an employee although she was in the middle of helping someone else. I'm not sure if she was the owner but she was helpful and full of smiles which instantly put me in a better mood. I ended up getting two cupcakes: the peanut butter cup and the birthday cake. I also asked to sample the brown sugar peach & bourbon ice cream and eventually ended up getting a scoop. You can definitely taste the bourbon in this ice cream so much so that you have to be 21 or older to get some. There were also little specks of peaches in the ice cream as well. The cupcakes were tasty and moist and the frosting wasn't too overbearing. I thought the cupcakes were a little bigger than the average cupcake. When you bite into the birthday cake cupcake, you can see the specks of vanilla bean in the cupcake which is something I personally appreciate. The cupcake prices were your typical gourmet cupcake prices. I believe I paid $7 for two. The store itself is cute, clean, and fun. There's a few tables if you would like to sit down and enjoy your treats. Next time I have a sweet tooth (which happens often), I'll be sure to return to get my fix. Meh. I have a feeling the cupcakes would've tasted amazing IF they hadn't been burning some candle or scented whatever it was with an open glass case of their cupcakes. The cupcakes looked so delicious and their flavors made my mouth water instantly. The packaging was even cute and useful when taking the cupcakes home. However, when we entered, my nose was not welcomed to the scent of sugar and cupcakes. It was welcomed with the scent of some kind of air freshener. Candles ? Heated wax? No mater what it was, it over powered all my senses. When I looked over at the glass case and saw it was open back, I knew instantly that those cupcakes were going to taste EXACTLY how the store tasted. I could've walked out and said nevermind but I figured to still give them a chance. Because they still looked amazing. Unfortunately, when I did finally get to taste test them when I got home, I was sad to confirm my assumptions. It tasted exactly like air freshener plus a hint of chocolate. As a celebratory cupcake for myself, you can probably imagine how anticlimactic that gorgeous looking cupcake tasted to me. I hope to give them a try again and up my ratings. if you go off presentation these cupcakes are definitely a 10/10. They were beautiful and look amazing being displayed. The cupcakes are very fluffy and light. We love the taste of them but unfortunately they all taste alike. We tried 4 flavors and it all tasted the sand except the caramel icing did have a different taste. I love a good lemon cupcake but there wasn't any lemon flavor except for a tiny bit in the center of the cupcake and a little lemon flavor in the middle of the icing. The birthday cake wedding cake looked different but tasted exactly the same. I would recommend checking this place out because it's very cute and they offer a great variety but I guess of all the same just different looking. I'm thrilled to have a new bakery in the area. It's remarkable that they manage to do both homemade ice cream and cupcakes. Here's my favorites based on the ones I tried. - chocolate: was very rich in chocolate flavor, plain Jane look but that's just fine. - salted caramel with pretzel- amazing!!! Dulce de leche frosting, not too sweet. Very pretty. - kids had sprinkle ones the vanilla cake was the same for these as with the caramel with flecks of vanilla. Let me just say it's hard to find... (or make) a nice homemade white cake in particular. There are no other flavors to hide behind. This is my absolute favorite white cake ever and although when asked I might say my favorite is a chocolate this vanilla base makes me question that. Thank you for a cupcake that makes me question life by the way. Listen I've have cupcakes at the best places.. I'm not a foodie I'm a sweetie (puns happen) these are excellent and worth the trip. Other comments: ambience is somewhat lacking.. can't put my finger on it I did go at a slow time. Loved the cupcakes wrappers and packaging.
