Not really my favorite place to eat the cupcakes. It's just regular cupcake that u can make it at home.

Easily the moistest, most delicious cake and creamiest frosting I've ever had the pleasure of tasting. Until I found this place, I never cared much for cupcakes - either homemade or bakery purchased. They were always too dry and too overdone, and the frosting was either greasy or flavorless. The cupcakes from Small Cakes are perfect every time. While you won't find a wide variety - as I recall, there are always three or four standard flavors, and three or four fancier specials available - you will find a consistently moist, melt-in-your-mouth treat that will never disappoint. The first time I tasted Small Cakes, I thought I was in love. I began stopping in almost weekly. One day I stopped in and there was a teenage girl working behind the counter. As she was putting my order in the box, her thumb touched the side of one of my cupcakes and left a print in the frosting. She was not wearing gloves. I stood there watching, but she just wiped the icing off her hand and continued. When she finished, I opened the box and told her she had left her thumb print in my frosting. She took the cupcake out the box and placed it back on the serving rack to resell it! I was so disgusted! I left the store disappointed. The following week, I went to another cupcake shop in Overland Park off of 135th in the Deer Creek Shopping Center. The person who served my cupcake was wearing GLOVES! I thanked her for wearing gloves. She looked at me kind of strange so I shared my experience with her and she said "oh no, we always wear gloves here!" This is the BEST cupcake place in the area!! The cake part is always moist and delicious and the frosting is amazing! I'm not a frosting person but I lick it off my plate/fingers it's sooo good! The lemon is perfectly flavored- the perfect amount of sweet lemon taste. The chocolate and white frostings are finger licking good! Walked in today to order 10 specialty cupcakes as awards to college students with perfect attendance in my class. The clerk just looked at me when I asked what the options were. She said - this is what we have in the store. OK, I said, I would like to place an order. She told me to go to their facebook page to look at the options, even though I was standing right there. Why this place has such a buzz about being the home of the best cupcakes is a perfect example of the masses that just don't know good food and who are susceptible to hype and media promotion. There are few cupcakes that leave a bad after taste or that are so heavy feeling after they are consumed as smallcakes cupcakes. I rarely give a 1 star rating, but someone needs to point out that these are certainly not the best cupcakes nor are they even the best ones in Kansas City. One only needs to go to 3 women and a oven on Metcalf by 151st st to try any cupcake there to experience a really amazing cupcake to know what one tastes like. Or go to Andre's by the plaza and try something there - amazing desserts. Even most of the Cheese Cake Factory desserts are better than this place. The environment here is also tacky and not really all that great. I give it to the owner though for knowing how to sell and to sell well. That he does do. read more

I really didn't care for my overall experience here at Smallcakes. First of all there was only 1 girl working when I came in at 2:00 p.m and it took her about 2 minutes to come out from the back room. When she did help me she wasn't able to answer my questions about some of the cupcakes nor was she very friendly. The cupcake itself once I did get it was only marginal. I tried the Red Velvet, which is my standard cupcake that I try when I go to all cupcake places to compare. The cake was moist, but the frosting was not pleasant-it almost tasted gummy and was overly sweet. The packaging was also not conducive to traveling-it didn't make it home without tipping over. Can't they put them in something else like some of the other cupcake shops do to keep them from falling?? I had high hopes for this shop based on all the media they have gotten, but the cupcakes ultimately fell very short. read more

Crumbly, dried out cupcakes are the Devil's dessert, these were nice and moist with yummy frosting. I got the vanilla cupcake with chocolate frosting--the frosting was great and all homemade-y. The cake, however, could have very well been box mix. The cupcakes were kept covered, which is definitely nice since summer bugs seem to not be leaving anytime soon. Finally, the pricing was a bit much--I paid almost $7 for a cupcake and milk. read more

Let's call them what they are...regular cup cakes at a giant price. At $3 a cake, there is some expectation of a bigger than normal, extra yummy cake, especially in this economy. I found them to be good, but no better than something you buy at a grocery store bakery for half or less the price. I would certainly never dream of buying a dozen for $33. If they were jumbo cupcakes, the price tag would make more sense but they are a normal sized cupcake with extra icing. Sorry, but I won't be a regular there. read more

Ok, so I'm not a "cake" person....I usually pass on the Birthday cake, I am a cheesecake lover. But a friend gave me a Peanut Butter cup cupcake from Smallcakes, and now I am ADDICTED!!!! That was hands-down the BEST cupcake I have EVER had! The cake was moist, and the cream cheese pb frosting was unbelieveable. I could eat it with a spoon...I have DREAMS about that cupcake! I will definitely go to Smallcakes to try all the other flavors as well! read more

For my sons first birthday I was doing a bee theme and decided to go with cupcakes so the frosting could be swirled on top to resemble a bee hive. I found several pics on-line of examples and thought it was the perfect idea. I went into Smallcakes last Sunday to place my order in person for pick up the next Friday. I showed the girl taking my order a photo of what I wanted and explained in detail what I was looking for. The day before I was to pick them up I got a call to confirm my order. I again went over in detail how they were to look, color, flavors, etc. 3 of my cupcakes were lemon and she asked me if I wanted the lemon frosting on them. I stated that I wasn't as concerned that it was a lemon flavor on those but that all the frosting was the same so all the cupcakes had the same look. When I went to pick them they opened the box for me and it was not what I wanted. I was so disappointed. The frosting all just looked like a big blob on each cupcake. The clerk immediately knew something was not right by my expression and she very kindly offered to redo them. I showed her my picture and they did make them over while I waited. When she was finished they looked better, still not exactly what I wanted but fairly satisfactory. When I got home and opened the box the frosting on the 3 lemon cupcakes had completely slid off the cakes and they were now flat. I wanted to cry! I called the shop and was told that it was because the frosting they use for the lemon cupcakes is thinner than the other frosting and because they tried piling too much on to get the bee hive look it all fell. As if it was my fault for wanting this design. And after I told them no less than two times that I didn't care about the lemon cupcakes having special lemon flavored frosting, I wanted all the cupcakes to have the same frosting for the same look. I will say the cupcakes are tasty (I bought a couple the day I placed my order to try them) but I am truly disappointed that a business who does nothing but cupcakes and was featured on national television programs could not get, what I consider a fairly simple order, right :( read more

This place is pretty solid. I've eaten at some of the premier cupcake shops in the country (Magnolia in NYC, Crumbs, Georgetown Cupcake, Baked and Wired, Sprinkles, etc.) and Smallcakes, while maybe not the best of them, can certainly hold its own. Cake was super-moist (and delicious) and the frosting was pretty fantastic. Being a bit of a cupcake snob, I was worried when I went in. But after the first bite, I was sold. The sugar cookies with cupcake frosting are also worth a shot. read more

Have had 3 small cakes experiences. Had several different kinds of their cupcakes. The cupcakes are amazingly moist, fresh and wonderfully delectable. Great variety and great customer service. I concur about the high top tables being a poor option. I think they should have alternative seating especially for children. They have birthday options for kids parties that includes building their own cupcakes, and the kids taking a cupcake home with them when the party concludes. Great options for fun. read more

I had seen them on Cupcake Wars and was so excited to go in and enjoy a yummy cupcake. I took my daughter in here for a special occasion and what a let down. The staff was very rude and was almost mad when I asked for more details about the flavors. We got them to go since they seemed irritated we were there. The cake was so dry, that the edges broke off when I took a fork to it. There was not much flavor and the frosting was blah. I had cupcakes at a party I attended from Hyvee and they were 100 times better than these dry, bland disappointment. Wife and I stopped there this past Saturday afternoon. Not knowing the background of cupcakes, other than watching cup cake wars, we decided to try some of these most sought after cupcakes. Our first stop at a place we found it closed. So gps search of others stores, we found Smallcakes. It was meant to be. They were open and the young lady was friendly. We picked our sweetness of choice, she boxed them up and we headed home to Columbia MO which is 2 hours away. We don't claim to be cupcake connoisseurs but wow we're these good. Very disappointed in this business. Received a gift card for Christmas and decided to try this place out today and after standing in line for way to long, was told that they can not take gift cards. So basically they took they money for a gift card from my daughter and when I tried to use it they would not accept it. What a great scam read more

Smallcakes was great, before they sold out. Now quality and customer service are last on their priority list. After struggling to reach them via Facebook and phone to place a special order for abort bday party I finally went to the store to place the order. The "professional bakers" didn't feel the need to tell Me that my request would not be able to be made adequately. I had requested royal blue icing. Instead they made the order which required so much food coloring it caused the cupcakes to smell like and have the consistency of playdoh. More than half the cupcakes were left uneaten and the rest were tossed after a bite even the kids (who eat everything) wouldn't eat these cupcakes. Being a regular customer I had no idea why there was such a difference in quality. Luckily for me a baker was in our midst and explained how the food coloring was the cause and if they were true professionals they should have informed me they could not properly make a royal blue icing and offer other suggestions. When I made a complaint to Smallcakes on Facebook they immediately deleted it. We can't have bad reviews now can we? I've heard from numerous former regular customers how bad the quality has gotte since Jeff decided to franchise. Money may make you rich in the short term but your new found lack of concern for the customer will destroy your business eventually. read more
