This is my favorite cupcake bakery! I have tried several of their wonderful flavors including my favorite, the Red Velvet, as well as Pink Vanilla and the Lemon. All were absolutely delicious! Parking there on the weekends is at a premium, but well worth the walk. When I hold dinner parties, I serve their cupcakes and everyone raves about them. My birthday was today Valentines day as well. I came in around 2pm with my husband . We are both male and of african decent. Immediately the (I'm assuming) owner who wore a pink sweater kept rushing us to order when I told her and her assistant that I need to see what kind of cupcakes you offer. Which was occupied by customers. They would not stop staring at us clearly out of intimidation because we are black males in a cupcake shop In Olathe Kansas. The cashier was even shaking so bad while the Karen bred owner standing in the corner staring at us like she was preparing to call the police. The cupcake was great but we felt very unwanted. After finding out the Lee's Summit location closed and failed to notify me that my order of 6 dozen cupcakes for a work event would not be fulfilled I had to quickly find a replacement. I won a gift card to Smallcakes cupcakery and purchased a chocoholics cupcake. SWEET NIGHT...literally! It was so moist and rich and big enough to where I ate half of it then and enjoyed the other half a few hours later. After the pleasant experience, I decided to buy my Dad one for Father's Day since he LOVES chocolate cake, but opted out of us making him an entire cake to celebrate because he's trying to watch what he eats. I got Dad the Hot Fudge Sundae cupcake and he absolutely loved it. He opened it up and right away my Mom was looking over his shoulder into the cute little to-go box you get when you purchase one and she was asking where hers was. Dad was impressed by it's appearance and Mom immediately went to take pictures of it. I went upstairs and came back to find that he'd already devoured it! He said, "That was really good, thanks! It was almost as moist as my cake.." which is his way of saying, it was REALLY good! I ordered a custom cake and cupcakes for a milestone birthday. The order did not include an important ingredient - one of the main stars of what makes the cake great. During my entire email exchange with the Allyson, the owner never once did she acknowledge how this impacted my special day. We had several exchanges prior to me ordering the cake, so she knew how important this was to me. Customer service is definitely NOT a strength for her to say the least. She never apologized, nor did I feel she believed what I experienced and several of my guests expressed the same sentiment. The cake/cupcakes were supposed to be an earl grey cake with honey lavender frosting. However there was NO taste of earl grey in the cake. It was vanilla! She was not willing to try the leftover cupcakes, or have someone at her store try them to confirm. I called the very next day after my party. During the email exchange she offered to refund my entire order. I would have been fine with a dozen regular size cupcakes, but did't get a chance to suggest this before she offered the refund. To make matters worse, she NEVER made good on her word to refund my order. I followed up after waiting almost two weeks to ask the status, with no response. This incident occurred the end of March. The lack of integrity, business sense and customer service does not exist with Allyson. This is not her full-time role and it shows up in the way the business is managed. The chocolate cream has the most amazing frosting! My husband picked up four cupcakes for my birthday this summer and yum! I'm glad we split them because they were all tasty. By far the best one was the chocolate cream. It was similar to a Hostess Cupcake (if they were made fresh) and the frosting was so smooth and creamy and soft! I'm usually disappointed with bakery cupcakes because the frosting will be grainy or stale or just have way too much frosting vs cake. This one was absolutely perfect though. The drumstick cupcake also had the same creamy and deliciously silky smooth frosting on it which put it right up there with the chocolate cream. I'll be anxiously awaiting another special occasion so that I can grab another one of these tasty gems. read more

As a seasoned traveler & cupcake enthusiast, I am happy to report that Smallcakes has the best cupcakes I've ever had in the 26 different states I've been! (Maybe there is something out West I'm missing out on...?") The cupcakes are large & the ratio of cake to frosting is pretty good (although I think they'd benefit from just a TAD less frosting). My absolute favorite flavor is the "pink chocolate" which is a pretty standard cupcake, but TOTALLY delicious! I can only hope that there will be a Smallcakes opened up in the Charlotte, NC area in the near future - because right now I'm considering a 4-hour road trip to Atlanta, the closest location to me! :) read more

Must say I sadly do not visit Smallcakes anymore because they no longer honor the Her City Guide special and their frequent buyer punch cards. (I just saw a comment on Facebook that the Olathe location is now doing the punch card again!) They new "Belly" card they offer is worthless, DO NOT sign up for it. Also, their website says they promise a response when you contact them and I've sent them 3 emails and have gotten NO response. Don't have that on your website in large letters if it's not true. It would be easier for me to give up on Smallcakes if they weren't good cupcakes but they are so good. Well let's start with it was completely dead and only a few cupcakes remained. The bathroom was clean and so was the dining area. There just wasn't any fun there except us. The girl employee sat on her phone the whole time and I don't recall even a small smile or thank you. The cupcakeswere moist and frosting was good but very heavy and sweet. We tried the PB cup, pink frosted, and birthday cake. All were good and I'll probably return just bc I heard they give all their leftover cupcakes to the foster kids at KVC. Lots of choices, but not very customer friendly. Called a few days in advance to place an order - got VM when I called - ended up playing phone tag. My husband and two kids stopped by there last week. We see it while driving all the time and stopped in to give it a try. Pros: -The cupcakes were very tasty. Heavier than you would expect for a cupcake and yummy frosting. -The have little bottled cokes which is always fun :) Cons: -The chick at the counter was unbelievably rude and seemed more interested in doing her homework than selling $3 cupcakes -The tables were dirty, the stools have loose legs and the floor seems to have been painted concrete once, but is now more like a service station - chipped, dirty and stained -There was broken glass in the coke cooler. Obviously a huge safety hazard. If I can figure out how to post pics, I will. Given the fact the novelty of cupcake bakeries is sure to wear off, Smallcakes may want to clean up their place a little to encourage repeat customers. read more

There are several better cupcakeries in the KC area. I've tried three different smallcakes cupcakes and all had the same problem. The texture of the cake was too light in comparison to the frosting. The cake essentially collapsed on itself when I took a bit. Also, more heavily textured frosting made the cupcake top heavy. It not that the frosting was bad or the cake was bad, they just have too much contrast. I would have preferred either a lighter, whippier frosting or a denser cupcake. I'll save my money for other cupcake joints. read more

I SO want to love Smallcakes but after several tries, it's just not my "go to" bakery. The first few times I went were shortly after they opened (Metcalf and then 119th St) and several more since now. They have since fixed my first "ugh" moment of their packaging. It was first in plain boxes without the cupcake form in the bottom to hold them upright. Then, it was Chinese takeout boxes; better support but a B*%& to get them out off in one piece. Now, they have the proper boxes. The second "Ugh.. I've gotten "day old" items. Now I can't say 100% that they were day old, but the cake was dried out and not "fresh". Maybe it's because they were setting out or something. I don't know, if I pay that much for a baked good, I want it fresh. The third "Ugh".. although their frosting is yummy (frosting lover), it's too heavy for the cake when the cake is fresh. You almost have to eat the bottom of the cupcake first, then the top with the frosting to get a decent bite..which leads me to my forth Ugh... Size. Yes.. these cakes are too big. Although I can eat more than one in a sitting, I also like balance in my foods. If there was less icing so you could taste the flavor of the cake.. it might be better. It's sort of like a Reese cup. The miniatures are better because it's a nice balance of chocolate and peanut butter. Fifth and final Ugh... customer service. This is 50/50. Some stops have been great. Some, not so much. Overall.. If you are having a sugar craving, stop on by. If you're looking for that perfect dessert to impress friends or family.. move along. read more

Let me start off by saying that the Smallcakes in Mission Farms is great - the Olathe location was awful. Night and day! It was our wedding anniversary and we were looking forward to celebrating with some awesome cupcakes - and to make a long story short, we ended up throwing half of them away. Not fresh at all. I hate when you look forward to eating something yummy and it ends up tasting yucky. I ordered three different varieties of cupcakes and they were all old and stale tasting. It was such a disappointment. The icing was hard, the cake was dry, and no filling. Paid $10 for 3 cupcakes. Total waste of money. Next time I will stick to the other location. read more

Meh, nothing special. They have a fairly big store, but it feels awkwardly empty. The staff girls working, seemed like I was almost irritating with my questions (will they be good tomorrow, best seller, etc). Their cupcakes are displayed nice, and have a nice selection of different types. I've been in twice now, and they had switched up a few of the flavors- so it's nice to know. Not sure what has happened to small cakes maybe they are under new ownership. Ordered cookies for graduation and when I went to pick them up the young person behind the counter said find your name on the wall and just grab your order and go. I did this and when I got to where I was going the cookies were burnt on the bottom and not able to be eaten. I call the store and they had to call the owner. I received a text that offered to replace them however I was now out of town and couldnt get back to the store. I call the store back and a very rude person said sir are you sure they just aren't golden brown!!! and went on to say they would have sold burnt cookies. I would have been in total agreement however they sold me burnt cookies. They refused to refund my money which is very sad because prices have increase and this was a gift. not sure how you stay in business with such terrible customer service. I'm definitely a cupcake lover and was excited to discover this place on a visit to the Kansas City area. Now let me say, I have pretty high standards for cupcakes. I've had, what I consider, the holy grail of cupcakes from Sprinkles in both Hollywood and Washington DC. On my visit to smallcakes, I chose the cookies and cream. It was good, but it wasn't the greatest. I enjoyed the icing but the cake part was disappointing. It fell apart so easily and I was hoping for so much more than just chocolate flavoring. While I would visit again because that's how much I love cupcakes, this isn't my top choice. read more

Droopy is not typically a word I would use to describe a cupcake, but it works for the experience I had a smallcakes. You know when you have a cupcake that is so soft and you are about two bites in and the heavy frosting on the top starts to overpower the soft cake and makes it....well.....droop? Yeah, that's what happens at small cakes. The frosting is simply heavenly. It is the perfect blend of sweetness, creaminess and lightness. All I can do is close my eyes and dream of swimming in a pool of that stuff. The cake tasted amazing, but as I mentioned before the texture was too soft and crumbly for me. If I can't get all of the cupcake in my mouth I tend to not be a happy camper. There were definitely crumbs all over the place after I tried to demolish as much of the cake as possible. I want to like this cupcake place because it is in a convenient location and has hype from national tv shows. The sad news is that all of the cupcakes seem to have the same base (vanilla or chocolate) and flavored icing, which leaves the experience lacking. I have been in several times and noticed the problem to be consistent in their selections. The only cupcakes I would suggest are ones that are vanilla or chocolate, because you won't be disappointed by the flavors. The flavor in the icing is not alway pleasant and can be a little overwhelming at times. I have rarely met staff with inviting personalities. The Carmel Crunch cupcake has all the necessary elements, chocolate, crunchy salty pretzels, and caramel. Who could ask for more? Me! The cakes may be small but they are BIG on taste! These cupcakes are some of the moistest cakes I have ever tasted! They have a standard mix of flavors each day but then feature special flavors that rotates. Hands down my favorite is the "Fat Elvis" which is a banana cake with peanut butter frosting and a caramel drizzle (they have this one on Fridays). You can't go wrong with any of their options! Our second Cupcake Friday of the summer was spent at Smallcakes. We have had their cupcakes before and were hopeful they would be as good as we remembered. They didn't disappoint. I had the carrot cake and I will say, I have had better. The frosting was delicious, but the cake itself was on the dry side. I like a moist carrot cake so I was a little disappointed. My kids had pink chocolate and cookies and cream. They goobled them up! My husband had the pineapple upside down cake and gave it two thumbs up.
