Went to this shop over the weekend of 4/12 with my friend and her son. We are all people of color (I am black, my friend is Chinese and her son is biracial). The person who was at the store (female presenting) was not friendly and very off putting. My friend had put some items on the counter and shared with the staff person that she was still looking. I purchased a couple of items and the staff person assumed I was paying for my friends items as well. They could have asked if I was buying all items instead of assuming. Everything you want in a sweets shop - bags of the classic candies you know and love, Swedish candy, licorice, homemade chocolates from a nearby chocolatier. Loved the unique banana-black licorice candies we got, unlike any combo and pillowy texture I've had before, like a unique marshmallow. My friends and I went on a walk... we went from Redwood City to Half Moon Bay. Sure it was a 20+ mile walk, but it was fun! We stopped by Small Town as a celebratory exploration of our end point city of Half Moon Bay. Located in the Downtown area, this shop is so cute and offers a lot of unique delectables that we have not seen before. The space is wonderful to meander and just take in all the different treats. Dill pickle cotton candy and a huge selection of truffles and bon bons, among other delectables. This is a must see place to explore. Street and lot parking in the downtown area. Casual. A great place for the candy lover, lots of different options to choose from. You have more traditional type of candies and gummies and some more novelty things to try (habanero licorice anyone)? We got a bag of salt water taffy, half a bag of apple ring gummies, and a bag of their dark chocolate, caramel sea salt pretzels to try an assortment of things. Taffy - great for those that like salt water taffy, soft and chewy, a bag has an assortment of different flavors. Apple rings - chewy, sour, delicious. Pretzels were interesting and while I liked the ingredients, I think these were made a bit on the salty side. read more

If I could eat everything in this place, I would. I love candy and this place just widened my eyes (and my belt) as I was surrounded by the variety of sweets. Entering the shop, you are greeted by wonderful workers alongside people who are also enamored by the wall to wall choices of sugars. The place is clean, neat, organized, and very presentable. It is not thrown together like many other candy shops, and it feels like you can be an adult and a kid at the same time with its more modern take on a sweets shop. Be sure that you are ready to climb the steps up and down into the shop as it looks like it can be dangerous, and spend some time in there. Where's the six-star choice? I'm an unashamed candy lover. Been that way since I was able to crawl. Some call me a diabetic in training. A friend let me know that a new candy shop had opened in Half Moon Bay just across from Johnny's, which was Main Street Grill. I photographed Bill, the owner of MSG, so I have a soft spot for that location. Anyway, I went into Small Town Sweets, and this sweet young woman was there. I later found out that her name is Jazmin. Because I had ridden my motorcycle to HMB, her expression seemed a bit suspicious of me. Apparently, us motorcycle types 'look' suspicious. But as soon as I asked her questions about candy, her demeanor was super friendly and engaging. She recommended some malted milk balls, locally made English toffee with pistachios, and some sugar treats. I bought them all! I am SO HAPPY to have discovered STS, as well as meeting Audrey and Jazmin. Always a fantastic experience going into their shop. read more

What a sweet find. I'm super impressed with this lovey shop. The store is clean and well organized and simply full of delicious options. Their chocolates are so good! They have a lot of copycat flavors mimicking a large California beloved candy chain ...but a bit fresher and more flavorful. Their chocolates have the freshness that can't happen in larger chain store no matter how venerated and and awesome they are. I'm particular we love their caramel options such as dipped caramel and chocolate cookies with sea salt and the hard brittle toffee with dark chocolate and sea salt. And the s'mores bar in dark chocolate is unbelievable! The packaging is lovey and I'm planning to do all of my holiday stocking treats here from now on. This place is spacious and well-located, conveniently downtown-near all of the other darling shops. There is no place that you can find this quality of hand-crafted, shockingly delicious treats at this price point. The store owner was beyond sweet-fitting the theme. She was extremely knowledgable in all things candy. She gave us some great info about one of the local chocolatiers. She gave my girls a taffy for finding Waldo (a little event currently going on downtown). They wondered around for a while during the time I found the perfect candy for my husband (Belgium Milk Chocolate Malt Balls)...among some other sweets. My son and I have gone to both the old location and the new, more spacious one. Both times, the owner and teenage male employee were helpful and friendly. My eight-year old had a million questions about everything, and the owner was so patient with him and treated him like a little adult. The candy shop was the highlight of our visit. We were on our way out of town and only purchased two bags of candy. Maybe I was overwhelmed by all the beautiful candy but I wish I had bought more. For a little shop, it was spacious, clean, and fresh looking candies! They have a good selection of different flavors of water taffy and popcorn. They also provided a variety of hand-made dark and milk chocolates. What a tough choice to make?! The lady behind the counter was warm, friendly, and provided information about the artistic made chocolates. We were so impressed about the artist /candy maker, my hubby and I purchased a little cup of milk chocolate Rocky Road candy and 2 milk chocolate turtles! Disappointed as I wanted to come and support local business - I came during working hours and there was a sign on the door that said be back in 10 minutes - I waited for 35 and no one came back . Yes- I as annoyed as I took time out of my work schedule to get something for my son but also I am writing this more out of concern for the owners - several customers came and left and not sure if you even know your store is closed during working hours . This store has been a favorite of mine for years. Every time I'm in HMB I make sure to stop in and grab some delicious treats. I love the new location! The bigger space has allowed them to expand the variety of candy they carry. There are many candies in there I haven't seen since I was a kid adding to the nostalgia. The customer service has always been excellent! This is a must stop if you are in town. Last time I was in was over the 4th of July weekend.
