Normally I would give this place 5 stars for every aspect but... not this experience since COVID-19. Today two employees making the pizza were not wearing masks as recommended by CDC. Their masks were either below their nose or their mouth. I politely asked one of the employees if she could pull her mask up that it was making us uncomfortable her response was to pull up her mask with total disregard she then looked past me and kept walking. As she prepared our food she pulled down her mask with her gloved hand to talk to her co- workers then proceeded to finish putting toppings on our pizzas with her same gloved hand. The poor quality cloth masks are contaminated all day by moving it up and down to talk with the same hands that touch the food. I won't return. read more

Two visits in 2 days... so glad I waited to review! My first visit was just okay. Not by fault of Smack Pie but more for my lack of experience with their ordering system. It takes a time or two to get the system down. Creating your own pizza can be somewhat artful and takes some planning if you want to get it just right. Your first time through the line can be a little overwhelming. The pressure of making on-the-spot-decisions can negatively effect your pizza creating abilities. My advice... take a minute to look over the menu so that you feel prepared for whats to come. You're going to need to choose your crust, sauce, cheese, meat (optional), toppings, and finishing drizzle. CRUST: You start off at the beginning of the process... with the crust. Unless you specify that you want GLUTEN-FREE ($2 more), you'll get their delicious original crust. SAUCE: Then you choose your sauce. Red sauce, white sauce, pesto, BBQ, buffalo sauce, olive oil. CHEESE: Then cheese... shredded mozzarella, fresh mozzarella, Parmesan, blue cheese, feta. MEAT: Then meat... pepperoni, spicy pepperoni, salami, Canadian bacon, Italian sausage, chopped chicken, buffalo chicken, and bacon. TOPPINGS: Choose your toppings... most pizza-friendly veggies, garlic, fresh basil, dates, celery, apples, and grapes. All of the potential for an amazing pie. FINISHING DRIZZLES: ,,,to drizzle or not to drizzle. You can finish your pie with a drizzle of balsamic, various pestos, BBQ, different ranches, spicy buffalo... My first visit I ordered the Classic Margherita. The pie lacked a quantity of ingredients. Sparse pieces basil, sad and mushy tomatoes (Roma tomatoes would be a better choice), and a lack of fresh cheese. My second visit... FANTASTIC! My second visit I was prepared. We were wandering around downtown Lodi looking to grab a little chow and a cold brew. Group decided on Smack Pie. I like the build your own concept but they must cringe when people lean over the glass to point at the ingredients. Seriously, don't you think you can say tomato and they will know what you mean...must you point...Any way, the staff was quite friendly and helpful. Ordered a pizza to split with most everything on it. They have several beers on tap including Blue Moon. We grabbed an outside table and shortly our pagers went off signaling our pizza was ready. Pizza was cooked perfectly and tasty. Went perfect with the ice cold Blue Moon. Process seemed organized and efficient. If you are on your first visit, pause to survey your surroundings, the process and the ingredients. Choose your crust, sauce, cheese, meat and toppings. You will find pretty much everything you would ever like to see on a pizza available. The process is not unlike Chipotle except for pizza. You can choose as much or little as you want. I love the concept of all these chipotle style pizza places and had smack pie bookmarked for quite some time now. I made the effort to come here for lunch today. My bf really wanted Lodi beer company but, since we haven't tried any build your own pizza places, I thought smack pie sounded like such a great idea. To my surprise, they weren't packed for lunch time. According to yelp, they're usually packed for lunch and are very good at accommodating first timers. Reading that they're great at accommodating first timers gave me some sort of expectation that their customer service was going to be great. I was wrong . We weren't greeted like everyone else who walked in after us, we weren't asked what kind of crust we'd like, after telling them we were first timers they just ignored us and didn't explain how things worked, and some employees were extremely rude when we asked questions. I wanted to give this place at least 4 stars since the pizza was delicious , however the cons outweighed the one pro. I'm hoping the customer service improves, if not then I won't be back especially since they're are so many new build your own pizza places opening up closer to home. read more

If you know me you know I LOVE pizza. It should be it's own food group. That's why when I say that I think Smack Pie Pizza may be one of the best locally owned, non franchised pizza places I have ever eaten at, I mean what I say. The concept is AMAZING. Whats one of the main problems when you go and get pizza with everyone? One person wants one topping but doesn't want another...the next person wants light sauce, the other person wants it lightly baked. You end up compromising and you don't really get the pizza pie you want. Here at Smack Pie they took a fresh approach to that very problem...the have an almost Chipotle style setup where each person gets to order their own pizza. I would call it a personal pizza, but it's not one of those small little ones you eat in 4 bites. The last two times I have gone home I took half my pizza with me. All this for just under 9 bucks. Here's the kicker...for that 9 bucks you get WHATEVER YOU WANT on your pizza. Honestly. Whatever and how much ever you want. From the sauce to the toppings to the cheese. I watched my dad try to see how much he could get and he honestly got almost every single topping and they didn't bat an eye. Now that would be good enough...but to top it all off (no pun intended) the pizza tastes absolutely amazing. It's cooked in an oven and done in a little over 5 minutes. If you wish you can get their "Smack Pack" deal and pay $12.95 and you get a half salad and drink. (Hint...the half salad is still big and you can share it with a partner.) They even have a loyalty program for every 10 pizzas you buy you get one free, and they send you text alerts to update you on your status. Awesome little pizza place in the middle of downtown Lodi. It is understandable that they are slow they are a brand new business. For the most part the employees are pretty fast though and very nice. My problem is the one oven. You can not run a successful pizza place with only one oven. Gahhh and the unorganized lines people constantly are cutting. Wtf is that?! As for the pizza I got something simple pepperoni pineapple and jalapeño. I like the crust and the sauce a lot but my pizza was extremely undercooked and my friends were perfectly thin and crispy. I came on a Thursday night and they had a Farmer's Market on School St. There was music playing and a beer garden right outside the restaurant so it was a really fun and chill environment. Since the farmer's market was outside, the line to Smack Pie was out the door. But the line moved relatively quickly so don't worry if you see a long line. You can pick if you want to build your own pizza or pick from their signature pizzas and the the base price for both is $8.95. I got red sauce with light cheese, chicken, mushrooms, olives, sun dried tomatoes, green bell peppers, and artichoke hearts. It's not on the menu, but I saw on Yelp that you can get a peach basil sangria! It was so sweet and delicious. I didn't taste much wine, but either way it was really refreshing and complimented the savory aspect of the pizza well. I got a balsamic reduction on my pizza as a finish and it added a delicious sweetness that it needed. The crust was super thin, crunchy, toasty, and all-around delicious. I wanted to eat all of it, but it was my friend's bday and I wanted to leave room for cake. Bonus: Since it was my friend's bday, we brought a cake and were going to use a plastic knife to cut it, but this super nice bus-boy came by and brought us a knife from the kitchen! Such a sweet man. It is kind of like a pieology, where you get to choose your own toppings on your individual pizza. The line can get pretty long, however, there were a lot of employees working to keep the line moving. I ordered the veggie pizza. There are tons of vegetables on the pizza. The cheese is not chewy it is gooey...that doesn't sound good, but its the cheese that lingers from plate to mouth. But the star goes to the crust! For $15.90, $7.95 a pie our stomachs were satisfied- you get 8 slices per pizza and I took half of mine for later- ate two slices on the way home.... Fountain soda is $1.80 and craft beer is $5.00. I sincerely hope they keep these prices b/c you can't beat it. I recommend their bbq sauce- perfectly sweet. I also love sun dried tomatoes on my pizza- yum. All the toppings I had were good. You get one 'free' ranch per pie- it's good but a bit thin. I docked a star b/c my boyfriend found a long blond hair in his pizza- I have short hair so... I would suggest that the employees should have to keep their hair off their face to help prevent this b/c it's gross. My family and I love this place! For $8.95 you can get a pizza or salad with any toppings you desire. Dates, grapes, or apples on a pizza? Why not? Smack Pie has them! Or, for more mundane toppings, they have the typical pepperoni, sausage, olives, etc. It's a fun, different experience to order a pizza and pick the toppings as it's being made, rather like going to Subway, but a superior product. I had traditional sauce, mozzarella, chicken, pineapple, jalapeno, peppercini, grn pepper and onion. So so good. They put lots of the corn meal on the dough too which gives the crust a great taste and texture. We sat on the patio which is on a main road in the old town area. Went to Smack Pie for the first time this past Saturday. I wasn't sure what to expect but I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I love the concept of creating your own pizza. I'm usually the type that is like "no this and no that" so this is a welcome change! Thin crust is my favorite and the ingredients are fresh and the pizza is just delicious. It could be seen as a little pricey but I think the quality is good so it's worth it. Kids pizza's are 4.50 each plus .50 cents for extra toppings. The staff was friendly and helpful , I ordered 2 pizza's first then figured I'd take 2 more to go for my kids and they had no trouble adding them to my order midway.
