Something is happening there. No one is altogether sure why this place works, but it does. We think the resident art collective that founded the studio space is only doing this because no one else is. There seems to be one hell of a demand for it though. Praised by bicycle-riding hipsters, Schlitz-drinking indie darlings, and second-hand fashion kids of every variety, Flotsam studio parties have nearly achieved cult status and the red ribbon hasn't even been cut yet. Featuring bizarre sculptural works, nerdy art objects and eccentric collage, the priorities here are clear: keep the scene small but keep the scene alive. Aside from the artwork (which is concentrated and minimal) the space boasts American red brick walls, a vaulted tin ceiling and decorative stylings that are decidedly homemade. With books and sneakers suspended from the ceiling, tumbleweed chandeliers and vinyl records serving as a window blind, the place seems less like a traditional art gallery and more like an homage to DIY culture. Located near the intersection of Swiss Avenue and Hall St., Flotsam is the brainchild of resident artists Evan Horn, Elliott Horn and Cody Ross, but the list of contributors is not only long, but inspired. With the closing of Trees, Gypsy Tea Room and other medium-sized music venues in Dallas and Denton, this gallery/music hall has hand-selected bands and party anthems that attempt to articulate where most of us wish Dallas was going. However, without compromise. Seating only 750 patrons,there's not a bad seat in the house. Acoustics are almost perfect, comfortable seats,easy parking. I can't say enough good things about this space. Problem is,Dallas has so many venues, getting back here may take awhile. Obviously Jon Andersons peeps did their homework on selecting this auditorium to showcase Jon's skills,still viable at 80 years old! His singing and music still thrills after decades. An interesting aside. As a young man,I saw him with Yes just down the street in 1972! That would have made him 27! Here we are 53 years later and he's singing not only classic Yes Hits but very good recent music he has written. If you get a chance,check out Moody Performance Hall,you won't be sorry. Go!

Hubby & I attended the critically acclaimed production of, "Hedwig and The Angry Inch" Friday night, 03/07/15, to see my daughters boyfriend, who is playing in "The Angry Inch" Rock Band. WOW......the band / music is amazing! Robert Rain, as Hedwig, and Jenine Galante, as Yitzhak, both give captivating performances! The story is sad, yet some parts are unexpectedly funny, as told by Hedwig Schmidt. The theatre was Rockin', the audience was singing and really involved in this play. Again, I really like this venue and hope to see more plays / productions here! The Margo Jones / Magnolia Lounge is truly a Dallas Icon, as was Margo Jones, herself! Per Wikipedia: ***Margo Jones (December 12, 1911 - July 24, 1955) , was an influential American stage director and producer best known for launching the American regional theater movement and for introducing the theater-in-the-round concept in Dallas, Texas. In 1947, she established the first regional professional company when she opened Theatre '47 in Dallas. However, during the party an artist spilled red paint on the carpet, so she later brought professional cleaners to deal with it. Unfortunately, some carbon tetrachloride had been absorbed into the carpet and later evaporated, filling her home with toxic fumes. So she woke up dizzy; it was later discovered the gas had caused kidney failure. She was then found unconscious on the couch resting and she was rushed to hospital, but died 9 days later. According to her friends, she briefly regained consciousness and found out she was going to die, and made elaborate preparations for her burial, including asking her friends to dress her properly and grooming her for her funeral. Locals peddling thier products they have spent hours crafting with love to others in the community. And the city was so supportive of the vendors- the city employees working the event were constantly making rounds insuring everything was going well and the visitors were having a good time. The Mayor even came around and was shaking everyone's hand and taking selfies with the booth vendors. I see you, Mr. Mayor Jim. They had a ton of food and local bands/ performers as well. My favorite was Poly Hwy- go check them out on FB. They were Polynesian and had a very island-y vibe. It was the perfect chill music to have playing while you stroll around. John Tipton was second- dude if you are reading this- that was the best cover of Bad Leroy Brown ever! And all of this was FREE! Silver Dollar Winery was serving up vino- although I wish they would have had the frozen peachy wine slushie- hint hint for next year guys ;). Crazy Cowboy was smoking up a storm and slinging brisket sandwiches and Rahr beer. La Rosita truck was also there in case you had a hankering for a taco. Bedford is a hidden gem guys, real talk. It was a beautiful day and a great spot for all this fun. Bookmark this and meet me there next year!

There is an orchestra pit I've seen used as a dance area or more seating. During the daytime it has little to no shade. It is perfect for the Bird show during the State Fair as the openess allows the large birds room to fly over the audience. So glad to see them coming back after a long dry spell, due to covid. Wine & beer are for sale tonight, along with tex-mex from a local restaurant. Hope to see the return of numerous food trucks that they've had in the past. Counting on the return of local vendors, too. It was like a farmers market and craft show mix with 15 or so booths. Tonight, I'll enjoy PriMadonna, Texas' only Madonna tribute band and Even It Up, a Heart tribute band.

We've been coming here for years and every year they add new stuff they now have a good sound/light system and a covered area for the band. There is a small dance floor. They allow you to bring food and non alcohol drinks in(this year lots of fencing and they check your bags and coolers) they sell beer and wine and theirs a Mexican food booth. They had face painting and balloon art and a crazy big dart board. They now have live music 6-10 once a month with 2 bands.
