Please read the other reviews on here as well as mine, as there is a common theme. Dr Allen is not a good dentist, is not receptive to feedback, and only wants to take your money. My wife went to him for a filling, which was OK. He then recommended Invisalign, which was also OK, even though he is not an orthodontist. What is most regrettable is how he dismissed her after only 7 months of treatment, after we paid everything in full (over $4000) at the beginning of treatments. I myself have undergone Invisalign treatment, under the care of an orthodontist, for the same amount that my wife paid, and did not finish treatments for over 3 years. Every single person I have talked to have also had their Invisalign treatments for over 2 years. After stating that her treatments were done, he then charged nearly $500 for her retainer. Less than one month after her last treatment, my wife's teeth started to move back to being less than straight. It gradually became worse, leading to her retainer breaking after 9 months. When we contacted Invisalign, the company said that we have to talk to Dr Allen about any warranty, which was not given at the beginning of treatment. He stated that the warranty is only for 6 months and that it would cost my wife over $300 for a new retainer and over $3500 for another set of Invisalign treatments. We are considering taking other, maybe even legal, action for Dr Allen's malpractice and cavalier attitude about her outcome. read more

The hygenist Stacey is amazing. She makes my daughters want to get teeth cleaned and they actually ask me if they can go to see her again. The previous receptionist Sarah is also the sweetest person. I don't have much interaction with the new receptionist yet. Their office is always clean and pleasant. The appointments are efficiently done. I have not had major teeth work done there yet, but Dr Allen always seemed professional. I needed an invisialign and I went elsewhere because the other place offered a slightly lower price because of their bigger invisialign volume. I told that to Dr Allen and he was totally understanding about it. read more

Positives: The receptionist is stellar and the facilities are very nice. Negative: Dr. Allen. I found him to be very irritable and condescending. I have visited Sloop dental three times. During a procedure, Dr. Allen was clearly annoyed and visibly frustrated with the assistant. He spoke down to him with plenty of exaggerated huffing, puffing, and banging right in front of me. Very unprofessional and pretty awkward for the patient. During my third visit, he couldn't have been more condescending towards me if he tried. I almost said as much, but I thought it would be unwise to piss off someone who is about to put a drill in your mouth. I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt after his unprofessional behavior during the prior visit. For all I know the assistant wasn't performing well and Dr. Allen was having a bad day - don't we all? But after his blatant condescension towards me, I've chalked it up to his less than desirable personality and poor bedside manner. I won't be back. read more

The hygienists are really good and Dr. Allen is usually very cheerful. The practice is clean, with simple decor that makes me confident that the management are honest and patients are not over-billed or diagnosed with unnecessary procedures. I have not witnessed any negative behavior between Dr. Allen and his staff. My impression is that this is a small practice and Dr. Allen has a military background. Unlike older, more experienced clinicians, and perhaps because of his military background, he isn't used to being questioned by patients and may be abrupt when responding to questions. I don't expect my dentist to have encyclopedic knowledge of the entire dental literature so it's OK not to hear an answer right away. read more

I started going here about 2 years ago. I needed a general checkup and possibly a mouth guard. Everyone there was awesome. The hygienist was super friendly and they remember little details about you when you come back 6 months later. Just a small thing that makes you feel more welcome. She did a great job cleaning my teeth and eased up when she hit sensitive areas. As for Dr. Allen, I've got nothing but good things to say about him. He was nice to me, he had a good report with his staff and generally seemed like a nice guy. When I went to pick up my mouth guard the company that molds them sent the wrong one. He was apologetic, was able to get the correct one overnighted and gave me a Starbucks gift card to say sorry about the wasted time. Nothing huge, but a nice gesture nonetheless. Dr. Allen is a CONDESCENDING A**HOLE!!! I just wanted to make that clear before writing the rest of my review... Today was my second appointment at Sloop Dental, but it was the first time having work done by Dr. Allen. My first experience was a few weeks ago for a cleaning and some X-rays. The dental hygienist (Amanda) was great. She was very friendly, professional and good at her job. The office staff (Anthony and Sarah) are really great too. They are friendly and knowledgeable. Basically, my experience with Sloop Dental was all positive until the dentist came into the picture. I had two fillings scheduled for today. I was greeted by a very nice dental assistant named Leroy and taken to the room where my dental work was to be done. Everything was great until Dr. Allen began his work. He was clearly frustrated and irritated. Anything Leroy did (or didn't do) was wrong. (To Dr. Allen - I'm sure Leroy wishes that he could read your mind, but he can't.) He was condescending and borderline verbally abusive with his employee. I felt pretty terrible and disgusted when everything was finished, and it wasn't because of the fact that I couldn't feel half of my face. He continuously reprimanded Leroy throughout the procedure, showing little regard for professionalism or decency. Maybe he was just having a bad day, but that doesn't make it okay. Message to Dr. Allen (as I sure you will see this review): You have a great staff... I hope you don't treat them all the same way as you treated Leroy today. Your employees' level of competency is a direct reflection of your ability to properly train them. Rather than taking your frustrations out on your employees, try taking some ownership in your business. If something goes wrong - it's your fault (even if you don't think it is). I'm sure you learned some of these values during your time in the military. If not, just read any decent book about leadership (I personally recommend "Extreme Ownership" by retired Navy SEAL Officer Jocko Willink). Where to begin... From the moment I walked into my first actual appointment I was rushed and disrespected. Not only did they put me down for the wrong appointment time, but I was uncomfortable from the moment I walked in the door. I knew there was a problem when I laid down and the doctor started to review with me what the plan was for the day. When I left my consultation, weeks before my second and very last appointment, I was planning on coming in and having a few fillings redone and one of my back teeth shaped a bit. The doc made it sound real simple, quick, and painless - "would only take an hour, you'll hardly feel a thing". I came to find out that evening that what was about to happen was everything BUT simple, quick, and painless. The worst part was, he didn't even take down what the original plan was for the procedure and was only going to work on 2 teeth when he ended up having 5 to work on and the reshaping of the last one. If I thought I was already being worked on in a rush, this just sparked a whole nother issue as the doc became visually agitated. After being numbed I had to rush to the bathroom to spit out a mouthfull of blood. The shot of novacane that was given was a shooting pain throughout my entire face and was just shove right in there and I was shot up four times. Noooot necessary. But talk about rough and uncomfortable, not to mention gross. This was then followed by the doc using the drill to get rid of old fillings that needed replacing. This was done with zero sensitivity and care for me as a patient. He was pushing, prodding, pulling very roughly to the point where I was yelling "ouch" or "stop" which was then repeatedly ignored. All throughout this painful procedure, the doc was talking down to his assistant and belittiling him - poor poor guy - making him sound, feel, and look completely stupid and incompitant. So the doc decided to take a break and tell the assistant out loud in front of me "we'll just have to talk about this later". The rest of the procedure continued with a female assistant which the doc certainyl did NOT let up on at all. He continued to belittle and talk to her as well right in front of me and I was clearly shooting stabbing looks at him and rolling my eyes. How rude and inconsiderate - I'm right there and he thinks I can't hear or I am just going to disregard. This ruined my entire experience even aside from the physical discomfort. I was embarassed and walked out that evening refusing to set up another appointment. They then had the audacity to email me and ask me for a follow up report... I spoke briefly as I wanted to make sure the real details were in my review here, where it actually matter and will be shared with other potential clients. Needless to say, I was seriously displeased and uncomfortable with the overall experience while I was there. It's really quite unfortunate because I was referred to this doctor and carried through with my appointment (a very heavy one at that) in addition to paying $240 for the worst, most rushed and insensitive dental experience of my life. What a regrettable use of my money and insurance coverage. After only a few minutes into the appointment I was made extremely uncomfortable, and almost embarrassed, and had committed to never returning again. I shared this with the person who referred me and, needless to say, him and I have quickly decided to refrain from returning as clients due to this last experience. read more

This is the best dentist I have ever been to. Very friendly staff, the office is in a great location and very modern, plus Dr Allen has great bedside manners. I had to have some fillings put in and there was a TV pulled up above me and I wore noise canceling headphones the entire time. I would highly highly recommend this place. My entire experience at Sloop Dental was wonderful. They scheduled me quickly, they told me exactly what my insurance would cover and were friendly and helpful throughout the process. Both the dental hygienist and Dr. Allen talked me through exactly what they were doing and made me feel as comfortable as possible. If I could give a negative star I would. Long story short, after scheduling an appointment Sloop Dental decided they were no longer accepting my insurance and never called me to tell me. My insurance coverage was scheduled to end and I was trying to get in beforehand. Had I known this, I would have went elsewhere. Here's the thing. I can put up with a lot from a dentist. I've been to some sketchy ass back room dentists. I don't care if you don't speak English. I don't care if your place looks like a torture dungeon. Hell, so long as I'm unconscious I don't care if your place is an actual torture dungeon. BUT - I HATE feeling ripped off. I really, really, really hate it. I went to Sloop dental because I was working in town and my tooth decided to try and kill me from the inside. I was extremely hesitant to go to any dentist other than my home dentist, because I KNOW it's super expensive and often times there are hidden fees and such. So I called around and Sloop told me it was $45 for the exam. I said hey, not bad, for fifty bucks I can at least see what i can do. I get there, quick exam, the guy wants to take Xrays. "How much? I need to know how much before you take them." [i thought this was very smart of me.] Guy says "around 20 bucks." I'm like - hey, not bad. Go ahead. X rays are taken, dentist comes in, everyone is really nice. They take some pics of my tooth and tell me I have to pull it. I can't pull it, I can't risk it as I'm working in a very public facing position for the next week and a half. But thanks. Now I know. I leave to pay and - lo and behold - it's $80. NOT $65 like I thought it would be. How much was the xray? $35. Look - I know that $15 is not a lot. But SHOULDN'T YOUR EMPLOYEES KNOW HOW MUCH AN XRAY COSTS? This is my BIGGEST PET PEEVE EVER. I am not happy about this. The xray was 75% more expensive than I was quoted. I mention this and they told me - "he said AROUND 20." Since when is nearly double an acceptable quote? Especially for something like an xray - which is a fixed cost. Anyway. This is something that might not matter to many people so I'll tell you guys one thing. The office was nice and if you are afraid of the dentist for whatever reason, this is a good place to go. The chairs are comfy, they play Hulu for you while you sit [so if you are freaking out I'm sure this is a great diversion] and they are definitely very considerate about your comfort. Their stuff seems very high tech. If you have insurance that will cover your costs, by all means I think this place would be great. BUT. JUST HAVE A PRICE LIST OR SOMETHING. PLEASE. EDIT: I asked them to email me the xrays and the pictures of my tooth so I can go to my dentist back home and they did it pretty instantaneously. I've struggled with this from other dentists so I bumped them up to 3 stars. Honestly it seems like a decent place from the 30 minutes I was there, I just really, really hate being misquoted on stuff that should be straightforward. EDIT 2: Brought back down to 2 stars because after getting a 2nd opinion from another dentist, I think that Dr Allen is totally full of crap. He tried to convince me to get my tooth pulled by him while I was in Chicago. I work 10 hours a day, every day, for the next 10 days in a public facing role. I was VERY clear about my job, my responsibilities and how important it was for me to not be incapacitated in any way. He said "no you'll be fine, we can pull it in the morning and you'll be fine to go to work at 1pm the same day!" Even if this could POSSIBLY be true, it most likely won't be. So I feel like he was either lying and trying to get me to spend more money with no consideration for my situation, or he is some magical dentist that can guarantee a 3 hour complete recovery time for a tooth extraction with zero complications. If it's the latter, then I apologize and you should get 5 stars. Otherwise, screw you. If I had listened to you I may have had to gone to work drooling, bleeding, unable to speak and would've probably been let go. read more

I broke off a bonding repair on my front tooth that was in place for 20 years that was installed by another dentist. I called Sloop Dental in a panic at 730 am on a Saturday, and they told me to come in. I just walked out, 2 hours later and it looks better than it did before it was broken. Color match is fantastic, sizing is great. The pricing was reasonable, as I paid out of pocket. Office staff was super friendly and they exceeded all expectations. I planned on this being a temporary repair, but the dentist advised me he could make it a permanent one. This team of professionals has earned a patient for as long as I'm in the area. I tried this office as a referral from a coworker and couldn't have been happier. They were so friendly from the second you walk in the door! They're up to date on technology with giving you an iPad to fill out instead of a clipboard with papers and can do your X-rays right from your exam chair. They also have great hours if you're trying to make an appointment after work, they're open until 6:30pm. I would absolutely recommend this place! read more

TL;DR version: I legitimately signed up for Yelp so I could write a positive review for my root canal- that should say everything you need to know. Specifics: Very surprised to see negative reviews on here as this is legitimately the best dental experience I've had yet. Due to a broken filling from some less than ideal work done at a different clinic, I had to get a last minute root canal, crown and filling. The receptionist, Jillian I believe, was incredibly friendly and able to work me into the schedule. I ended up needing to come in a total of three times to get everything done and was able to easily schedule appointments around my busy work schedule. I can't usually get to my phone and even though my mailbox was recently (and accidentally) full so I couldn't receive messages, she texted saying it was Sloop Dental and asking me call and schedule my appointment to make sure I got the message as I had a temporary crown and was waiting to hear when my permanent came into the office. As this is a smaller office, I saw the same staff members each visit and cannot speak highly enough of the service I was provided. The treatment coordinator, Nina, was both courteous and professional when she walked me back to the room. Although I only briefly interacted with her, she greatly contributed to the welcoming atmosphere. When you get back to the chair the dental assistant, Leroy, gets you ready for the exam and then gives you sunglasses for eye protection and then headphones to wear so you can hear the show you pick out on Hulu that's put up on a screen above you. Like what? Who even does that. Leroy was similarly kind and professional, even asking about a show that I mentioned I was rehearsing at a previous appointment. I had a great experience with Dr. Allen, both in his patient care and the quality of his work. I can't use lidocaine and he was able to use an alternative medication to numb the area and frequently checked in to make sure I wasn't in pain. He took great care to ensure the crown fit correctly and that I was comfortable throughout the process.I was born with weak enamel and have struggled with numerous cavities despite my best efforts to prevent them. When I try to explain this, I've often found dentists to be dismissive or condescending, but Dr. Allen listened to my individual concern and prescribed a toothpaste with an increased amount of fluoride to help prevent the issue. Finally, Milena was an absolutely phenomenal help in handling insurance issues. I have multiple insurances and wasn't sure about the information on one of them, but because of her expert knowledge, she was able to find my additional insurance info by searching based on the few bits of information I could remember. This saved me several hundred dollars and I'm terribly grateful that she took the extra steps to make sure I was getting the best care possible. I really liked that they took pictures of potential problems so I could see what they were talking about. As a resident of the South Loop you can't ask for much more: convenient location, modern dental office and a great staff. I admittedly slacked on getting my teeth cleaned for several years but after a two hour deep cleaning by Amanda my mouth felt amazing. When you consider what she was doing (going underneath the gum on every tooth to scrape away plaque) it was a pleasantly uneventful and pain-free process. I needed to have one cavity filled by Dr. Allen and never felt a thing during that process, either. The end product looks great. Some people may view his demeanor in a negative way, but in my opinion, it is because he is confident in his work and matter-of-fact when it comes down to it. His personality is not overwhelming though so don't be dissuaded by a few people's bad personal experiences. If you're in the South Loop you need to check it out. read more

I want to start by saying that I am probably one of the worst dental patients ever. I have very high anxiety when it comes to working on my teeth from a dental work I had done many years ago. I had to have a crown on my last molar. The 2 step process was not painless but Dr. Allen made it as comfortable as possible. The temporary was slightly off and I did not realize it until the nova-cane wore off. Dr. Allen accommodated me quickly to make the temporary more comfortable. Dr. Allen did not take an impression of my tooth for the permanent crown but used new technology that took 3D images of my teeth to insure a perfect fit. I was a little skeptical that this would be accurate. To my pleasant surprise, when the permanent was put in place, it was indeed perfect. No additional drilling for an off bite. During the actual procedure, I had warned Dr. Allen of my anxiety. Stressed it that this anxiety is very real. He understood and few times stopped during the procedure and said that I was starting to hyper ventilate and we should break so that I could get the rest. He assured me, told me to relax and breath to get through so that we could begin again. He let me know what was going on and what steps were going to happen next (I find that very soothing when I know that the tooth is about to be drilled, I'll feel a little sensitivity, I'm gluing the temporary on, etc.). The staff is great! Leroy, Dr. Allen's assistant was awesome in calming down, Amanda, the hygienist is great. No complaints. read more

I've been to SLOOP dental twice now and it's the best dental office I've ever been to. The receptionist is very welcoming and understands all insurance and billing. She was very helpful, and even offered to give me my bill prior to getting my wisdom teeth out (so I wouldn't be loopy). All of the hygienists are so friendly and professional. They do a very thorough job, but also are very delicate. Dr. Allen is VERY good at what he does. I was very nervous about getting my teeth extracted since I'd never had any dental work done and I was being a bit of a baby. Dr. Allen was very calm and patient with me. He calmed me down, walked me through the procedure, and told me we could take breaks as needed. Dr. Allen is definitely a perfectionist. This is evident by all of the detail he put into the clinic (TVs in every room with movie/music options so you don't focus on the work he's doing, clean environment, and he trained everyone that works for him (there's no office manager, just him)). I think that perhaps some of the negative criticism about his bedside manner is simply because he is so particular about how everything is done. I would rather have someone nit pick until the job is perfect than have someone that is friendly but slacks off. You can't go wrong here. Glad they're in the South Loop! read more

Just had my fillings done. The procedure was quick and painless and I would say that Dr Allen did a good job. My gripe, however, is with the admin staff. The first time I visited the clinic for a cleaning last month, I presented a coupon for free doctor examination and all necessary x-rays which the clinic gives out at their website. I got a panoramic x-ray worth $95. I didn't notice it but I got billed for it. When I went back the following week for another cleaning session, I pointed it out to the staff and she said that I shouldn't have been billed for it but since they already forwarded it to the insurance, they'll just wait if the insurance will cover it and if it is covered, the clinic will adjust/credit the $95. After my visit today, I asked about the adjustment. The same staff said that there's nothing to adjust since the insurance covered it. This is where the confusion begins. She said that the coupon will only work if I didn't have insurance! So now she's telling me another thing. The coupon didn't have any disclaimer that says "not valid with insurance". This coupon is clearly a fraud! Where is the "savings of up to $350" that this coupon is boasting of? Now, I'm having second thoughts of continuing my dental program with this clinic. Dr Allen, I know you do good work. It's just a shame that your admin staff doesn't know how to handle such situations. read more

I'm new to Chicago and was looking for a local office in the loop. I scheduled an appointment blindly without reading any reviews...which was a big mistake. Sloop has friendly staff and dental hygienist. Probably one of the most most informative and painless cleanings I've received. Unfortunately my whole experience was abruptly finished when I met the dentist. A sealant of mine had fallen out and the dentist here recommended I get a filling done. I had concerns about getting a filling done, and wanted to understand the differences between a filling and a sealant. His explanation was in an incredibly condescending tone and was very brief as if he was in a rush. I was speaking to my mom on the phone before I made my decision while waiting on the cost of the filling to be processed. I asked Dr. Allen to explain it to her on the phone and his tone continued to be incredibly condescending and rude. He passed back my cellphone mid-conversation with my mom while she was asking him a question and said to me "I don't know she just keeps talking" and left the room. How insulting! I'm sorry I'm not versed in dental care procedures and I've never had any dental work besides the one sealant! all I wanted was a little more information before I agreed. I left the dental chair after this and told Dr. Allen that I was not doubting his clinical judgment, but I work in healthcare with patients on a daily basis and I just wanted more education. DO NOT go here. They list themselves as being in network for Humana, and then charge as out of network because they never updated their tax documents. It has been 6 months now and they are trying to make me pay cash for services because of their mistakes. I have spoken with the insurance company multiple times who continues to say that they haven't updated their tax documents and they don't answer the phone when Humana calls them. A complete scam. Also screwed up my filling and had to have it done multiple times. I had significant pain afterwards and couldn't eat for weeks. He told me to "take ibuprofen" and after a couple weeks of not being able to chew I finally convinced him to remove the filling and replace it (pain eventually resolved after the new filling and he found that there was in fact a problem). Oh, and had to fight them to not charge multiple times for the same filling as well. Choose a different dentist. read more

This is the second review I'm writing. The first review, at one point was visible when I wrote it over, and now yelp has hid it...shocker. If this one gets hid, I will be sure to right another one. To all the whiners that are giving Dr. Allens bedside manner a knock, I think he is to the point, accurate in his diagnosis and he has been nothing but kind. He has always been extremely courteous and as a guy, I'm definitely a baby when it comes to dental work. It's just sad to see how many whiners there are on this site. I have NEVER been more comfortable at the dentist than here and it's a shame to see so many putting this place down. I have been hear at least 4 times for different kinds of work. One would think I would notice something out of the ordinary. I just had two wisdom teeth pulled. They made sure I was good all the way around and I couldn't have been happier with the outcome. So to anyone hesitant, first check out the reviews that yelp decides to hide (as I'm sure this one will too). Dr. Allen is a great dentist with a great staff and extremely quality work. I've never noticed one instance of unprofessionalism. But yelp does cater to the babies with nothing to do but complain. Thanks Dr. Allen! read more

Sloop dental is seriously the best! We used to live down the street from this location and were constantly impressed with their friendliness, efficiency, and overall experience. Dr. Allen was very easy-going and thorough and it was probably the only dentist office I've been to that I didn't mind going to at all. Unfortunately we moved out of the area but for anyone in city/surroundings I would highly recommend it! read more

Sloop Dental is an excellent office. My first visit there was nothing short of spectacular. The front desk staff was friendly, and the clinical staff phenomenal. Coming from a small dental office that had barely anything to offer, I was pleased to find that Dr. Ken is very thorough, takes his time, and focuses on treatment and education. read more
