Ive heard great things about Slimmers but all I can say is that I left incredibly disappointed. I brought my car in to see about getting the AC fixed, they told me I needed a new radiator and AC unit so I listened and paid 2k to fix it. When I got it back I was super happy because it took about 3 weeks and I needed it back. But immediately after I noticed a lot of HUGE issues, car wouldn't accelerate, wouldn't turn off, wouldn't lock or go into park. I had to get it towed in, and they said they'd take a look at it. The receptionist woman was very unfriendly on the phone and in person, which was shocking because most of their other staff seem very polite. When they had it they said they'd fix it in the next week and it took them about 3 more weeks to get it back to me. Then finally I get it back for the second time, and my door dont open from the outside. I emailed them and told them about this issue and I was not rude or anything but I felt like the email I received back was very unfriendly. When I told them about this they told me not to take it to them if I cant trust them with my vehicle, which seems redundant since they are the reason I dont trust them, when I obviously trusted them enough to bring it there and to give them the opportunity to fix whatever mistake was made. I am a young woman and honestly felt a little taken advantage of and or not taken seriously whatsoever. I also received a couple voicemails saying essentially they didn't know what they were doing and they'd never worked on this type of car before (Hyundai Sonata), so Im not sure what "trust" they expect when they treat their costumers like this. They seem to lack a lot of basic costumer service skills and knowledge. They deal with a huge part of peoples lives (their vehicle) and people are bound to be frustrated when stuff is wrong with their car, so if they dont know how to deal with that they just shouldn't. read more

I give them 4 stars even though I have not yet employed their services. I was recently looking for new tires for my car so - upon recommendation from several knowledgeable friends - I emailed Slimmer's. I got a response by phone right away. The owners were incredibly helpful and even researched tires for me. Not only did they provide their costs, they recommended other places for me to look. When I found a deal on the tires I wanted and Slimmer's couldn't match the price, they told me honestly that - if they were in my shoes - they'd go with the deal I found. My daughter was a student at KU. We had another local automotive repair check to make sure the car was ready to be driven home back to CA. That other repair shop neglected to check the headlights and brake lights. We noticed they were not working. Thank God we noticed before we left town. We headed to Slimmer's automotive where Marcus helped us out. Not only did he replace our headlights, he topped off our coolant and checked the engine to make sure we were safe to drive home. He did find a small leak in the coolant hose but says it would make it back to CA. He was so honest and caring. If I lived in Lawrence, I would definitely trust my cars at Slimmer's. I have been working with the fine folks at Slimmers for years. They are honest and their work is fantastic. In this day and age where everything is disposable, and mechanics simply replace versus repair, it is very refreshing to find a business where the craftsmen take pride in their work and get the job done right. Yesterday, I picked up my parents' handicap van from them and was amazed! In addition to fixing the immediate problem, they had put the vehicle back together BETTER than when we bought it used. Their prices are more than fair but mostly, their quality of work is second to none. I will always bring all of my cars to their shop - oh, BTW, I live in Kansas City and it is worth the trip. This is the best car mechanic I've ever had. They have worked on my cars for years. They are reliable and honest (to a fault -- one time I had a $16 repair!). They always take the time to explain what the problem is and even show the faulty part. Their scheduling is efficient, so the car is always done when they say it will be. A big plus for me is that they treat both men and women equally -- no talking down to women or dismissing us. This is a great local business that does honest work. I highly recommend them! read more

They most honest mechanic you can get is a family member who's worked on your cars for decades. The next best place you can go is Slimmers. They are a business so they're not handing out charity work, but if there's a way to keep your car repair bill lower, they will look for it. They absolutely do not recommend unnecessary repairs which is nice because mechanics at other locations always gave the vibe of wanting to squeeze every penny out of me. Prices are competitive, they won't always be the cheapest place in town, I do call around other places from time to time out of curiosity, but I'd rather pay the extra $10-50 going to them and being able to trust the mechanics rather than going someplace else that's mildly cheaper and crossing my fingers they don't try to rip me off and claim my car needs a monstrous repair. The people who work there are polite and they're willing to communicate by e-mail, which works great with my schedule as a college student since I'm not able to answer phone calls when I receive them 90% of the time! read more

Now matter how busy they are they always will try to get you squeezed in and do a fabulous job. They worked on my college students car and they treated him like he was their child. They wouldn't return his car until it was absolutely perfect, which was about 4 days. To preface this, I am a 27 year old male who grew up in the country in the middle of Kansas. I read good reviews online about Slimmer's so I brought my explorer in to fix a problem that I couldn't figure out. The first time they said they couldn't figure anything out so they just cleaned up the manifold. They told me to bring it back as soon as the check engine light came back on, but they still charged me 300 dollars. I brought it back in as soon as my check engine light came back on. Then a week and a half later I finally called them and they told me they forgot about it and would have it ready the next day. I came in the next day and they told me they couldn't figure anything out but "cleaned up the manifold." Again, they charged me 300 dollars. After I paid, I went to get my car and found a bullseye crack in my windshield. I told them that it wasn't there when I brought it in, and they told me it looked like something I did, so they refused to fix it. The service was the worst service I have ever received at any store in the history of my life. I am a very easy going guy for the most part, but was outraged the way they treated me like an idiot, even though I am fairly knowledgeable about vehicles. This is the only place I have ever reviewed, and am only doing it to, hopefully, save other people the time and the money that would be wasted going to this shithole...
