WE thought we were getting wood cabinets since that is what they showed me when I chose the stain for the cabinets I wanted. They showed me solid wood samples that had stains, paints and different cabinet trim.
But make no mistake these are NOT wood cabinets. They are a type of particle board with a crappy veneer that looks more like a photograph of wood than any wood. Only the frame of the door and the front of the drawers are genuine wood. Also when we changed the plans cutting half the kitchen out and putting an island instead Sligh DID NOT CREDIT THE CHANGE. BEWARE! They just charged more for the changes without showing a credit for what we took out. And here is where buying cabinets is tricky...BECAREFUL who you trust with this as there are many ways that a dishonest company can make extra money on you. One of my contractors who has dealt with STEVE SLIGH on other jobs told me that he operate like dishonest used "car salesperson". They count on the fact that you don't know the way they price. Read on to know how to protect yourself!
At the beginning they had to take back and fix many of the wood edges as they were not finished correctly, they were rough and the stain wasn't blended. As photo shows we still have edges of wood that are rough and unblended.
WOULDN'T you THINK IN A SMALL KITCHEN THAT COST $16,700.00 for just the cabinets that you would get quality control AND high quality drawer glides. NOT WITH SLIGH CABINETS!
We were told by many that MORRO BAY CABINETS is a much better choice. Advice from the contractors I hired AFTER we got these cabinets: Get 3 or 4 bids including Lowe's or Home Depot as cabinets from Slighs are not better quality than a big box store EVEN though they charge more. Our bid for the original design from Lowe's was $10,500.00 approx. and $13,900.00 approx. from SLIGH. We thought it was worth more to pay for custom wood cabinets....WRONG! At Lowe's the sample is what you get! Why does SLIGH show you a solid wood piece including inside the door frame IF THATS NOT WHAT YOU GET? You get low quality that looks good after all the cracks and crevices are puttied up by the installer. My contractors say these cabinets will not hold up or stay looking nice over time!
ANOTHER PROBLEM: new Bosch STOVE DOESN't fit correctly. Sligh built the cabinets to have a finished height after quartz top of 37.25" inches high. Why? Standard high counter tops are 35-36". Steve Sligh lied straight to our faces that that is not the standard height. I feel he will say anything to get out of responsibility that requires money to fix the problem. The stove was installed where there was a 4 inch gap between stove and floor. Sligh built a wood frame to cover that air gap. Not an ideal look! It was clear that Sligh would not make this right. We watched while Steve Sligh just tried to talk his way out of any responsibility. This is his main job I feel, to smooth over the lack of quality control in their process. He is very experienced at these cop-outs.
Steve Sligh's business model seems to be install low quality cabinets and see if you notice. The installer quickly tries to putty up as many blunders as he can. The "melamine" inside the cabinets is not even a normal thickness. It's this really thin plastic that chips easily. Originally the father Sligh built a good reputation, but this is STEVE SLIGH's baby now and it's a different game!
It was hard, us not being contractors, to understand what Sligh Cabinets pulled over on us. Let me help you with how they write their contracts....since the installation I've had three reputable contractors review our contract and look over the cabinets from Sligh Cabinets. Every line item on a cabinet contract should have a $ price Or a DEDUCTION when you remove something! The contractors that came AFTER cabinet installation were shocked at the price we paid for these "veneered" "particle-board" and "thin plastic" lined (can't call it Melamine brand), and "cheapest glides" cabinets SLIGH delivered. MY contractors pointed out that STEVE SLIGH put in the cheapest glides (I found them for $3.24/set online) and they examined the crack near the ceiling and told me stories of other cases where people were unhappy with SLIGH. We are not an isolated case!
Steve Sligh's main job seems to be to try to talk you out of how you feel and what you see. All complaints go straight to Steve Sligh and he just try's to smooth talk you out of what you know. Steve people are smarter than you give them credit for! Steve Sligh tried to tell me that the large pan drawers NEXT TO THE STOVE should NOT have pan drawer glides. UNBELIEVABLE! They put $3.24 glides in all my cabinets drawers except for two pan drawers across from the stove. Notice the cracks above the trim. NOPE not something he'll fix! Steve Sligh takes no responsibility if it costs him more than a little money to fix it! read more
