This has to be one of the loveliest places I have ever visited on the Marin coast. I went to Slide Ranch with a friend yesterday, after we made a trip to Muir Beach and the Muir Beach Overlook. I'd passed the ranch many times on Hwy. 1 going up to Audubon Canyon, but if you're coming from the south, you have to make a hard left turn across incoming traffic onto a gravel road that appears to go straight down - you can't see any more than the first few feet of it. I always thought the place was aptly named "Slide" Ranch. This trip, however, we knew it was open to visitors. After driving down a steep gravel road, we were able to park and walk around and visit the ranch -- we saw goats and sheep, a duck pen, and many chickens poking about. People volunteering and staff people were around, who were friendly but not intrusive. We hiked down to the tide pools and just sat and drank in the natural beauty for an hour. We felt perfectly safe, whereas earlier we had started to trek the Owl Trail from Muir Beach, and come across a really sketchy, solitary fellow on the trail who was a little too friendly...and turned back. Slide Ranch was a welcome haven. After returning from the tidepools we sat at the picnic tables and watched the ocean some more. When we used the porta-pottie, I was astounded to see it was spacious and had everything -- paper, seat protectors, a flashlight in case it was dark, even a vase of calla lilies. That's a first, and it is the little touches that count. I will definitely be coming back for one of their events. read more
