One of my favorite parks as a kid, and now one of my favorite parks to bring my own kids to. Péri Park in Fairfax has a calm, tucked-away neighborhood feel with giant redwood trees, lots of shade, and a softer energy than bigger playgrounds in Marin. Quick guide below. One thing I really love is that it has separate little kid and big kid play areas. Sometimes parks with toddler sections accidentally make the older-kid area feel boring... but not here. The bigger playground is still genuinely fun and adventurous for older kids too. The toddler playground is designed for ages 1-5, while the larger play structure is designed for kids ages 5-12, which makes this a really good option for siblings with different age ranges. There's also a shallow creek behind the park that families bring their kids to explore. It's only a couple inches deep in some areas, so children can safely splash around and play in the water while parents supervise nearby. That little creek honestly feels like part of the magic of this place. I stumbled across this quaint little park on a trip to Fairfax. I'm glad I did, because it made for a welcome break after a long drive. There's a well maintained baseball field and batting cage on one side of the creek. On the other, there are tennis courts, a playground, and a nice shady area to unwind. There was a cool breeze blowing, and birds chirping in the trees. I think it's one of the most peaceful, relaxing parks I've visited in a while. I hope you like it too! read more

Peri Park - Playgrounds Near Me - Fairfax, California

This is the epitome of Marin. A playground in the middle of the redwoods, in a residential neighborhood. There are things to do for kids of all ages! The two play structures are similar, and they both have appropriately-sized climbing structures. The bigger kid side has monkey bars and bridges and multiple slide options, as well. The little kid side has smaller slides and climbing areas, as well as little animal stepping stones and a hollowed out tree to play in. The park also has a pretty awesome party space in the redwoods, with bench seating and plenty of shade. The parking can be rough, as the park is on a small street in a residential neighborhood. There is a small lot nearby, but be prepared to drive around for parking if there's an event. The lack of a perfect score is because this is also a park full of broken toys. There are so many little ride on scooters and cars, but many of them seem to have been tossed aside at the park rather than the dump. Kinda sad. read more

Peri park is much bigger than what you first see and that's the beauty of it. There's so much to do and explore. Shady paths, streams (when we're not in a drought), baseball, old homes converted to special-use facilities, exercise areas, great play areas, and much, much more. My only note of caution is that there have been a couple of off-leash dog issues that have been very unfortunate. One dog killed another dog and attacked a small boy, sending him to the hospital with bad bite injuries. The owner of the dog who attacked didn't take ownership of the situation but has reportedly been seen with the dog around the park on subsequent occasions. Other, less traumatic, dog incidents have been reported. So keep your eyes open and ears alert. read more

Peri Park holds a wealth of nostalgic value for me. I remember hanging out by the play structure years ago, watching friends' adorable kids conquer the monkey bars with determined clenched jaws. I remember hanging out with friends on a mellow summery afternoon as we caught up beneath the lush overhanging green trees, and just recently I enjoyed Peri's picnic area, perfectly shielded from the beaming sun. What a nice big park! Fairfax is such a great small unique town, and this park reflects that energy. There is a fenced playground for kids, with several structures that I would have liked to play on! There is a picnic table area shaded by tall trees (sadly no bbqs), and what looked like a low stage, maybe for live music? There was a long creek with kids (and adults) playing in, a bridge across to the other side with short trails to the other side. And there is a nice grassy area where people were just hanging out on blankets enjoying the warm sun. Beautiful! read more

I do not have children. However, I do have a dog and the parallels between dog parks and kid parks are quite astonishing. That dog that keeps humping your pup? Same as the little bruiser who keeps popping your kid upside the head with a shovel. That dog that is nipping at your pups ankles? Same as the kid that keeps kicking your kid in the shins. That dog that runs riot and causes a ruckus all over the park? Same as the kid that runs riot and causes a ruckus all over the park. The common denominator in both? Bad parenting. Now before I get tons of indignant hate mail, I am not saying that kids are dogs or that my dog is my kid. I just can't believe how similar both are and how parks for each tell their own stories of parenting and dog ownership. Truly, I do love kids. I like to play with them and feed them sugar and then give them back to their parents. :-) Peri Park has a lovely playground where the play areas are divided into areas for little ones and then another area for bigger kids. Much like dog parks have the small dog areas and the large dog areas. The park is new and has all kinds of fun things that make me want to run and play. . .it's got that nifty soft flooring that is covered with sand. I saw many a kid take a header and literally just bounce right up and keep on playing. On a Sunday afternoon it was crowded with little ones and their parents. Sadly, much like a labradoodle run wild, there was a beastly kid terrorizing the park. He pants some little kid and all I could think of is that psychological scarring that kid would have from now on and how he would never, ever want to dangle off the geodome. Then our hero kicked a kid off the slide platform. Literally. Kicked him. Off. Ouch. I don't know where this kid's parents were. . .probably hiding from him. YIKES! I am glad that I didn't have kids 'cause I don't have it in me to grin and bare it. I'd be holding that kid upside down off the monkey bars until his face turned blue or I guess, to be fair, I would really need to do that to his parents. Other than the human version of Cujo, it was fun to watch the kids play while relaxing under the redwoods that surround Peri Park. A small creek trickles through right outside the fenced in play area. There are BBQ pits and picnic tables under the shade of the statuesque redwoods. There is a community center with a nice, clean public bathroom. LouLou had a blast splashing through the creek and playing among the redwoods. We plan to make this a regular stop on our now weekly trip to Fairfax for ice cream. I mean to take LouLou to the park and to splash in the creek. Yes, the dog is the priority here. That and she LOVES the peach ice cream from Fairfax Scoop. :-) read more

This is a humongous playgrounds when it comes to such a thing. I want to give the park a 5 and the people a 1. but I will settle for a 3. There is an area for younger and older kids, just no real separation. It has great new playthings and swings. The only downfall, in my opinion, is the fact that there are a ton of nannies who bring their kids and just let them go at. Totally oblivious to the fact (while they are chatting away and are on the opposite side of the park) that the kids they are being paid to watch... well just aren't being watched. I will admit I am a first time mom so I should probably let some things go, I can't stand it when a 4 year old runs the show, if you are the mom grow some balls. sorry had to say it. This little girl kept throwing sand on my son, and then pouring it on the slide he was playing on. The mom kept saying, "that isn't very nice (insert kids name here), if you can't be nice we are leaving." my favorite thing about this mom was the next statements, "(kid's name) we are leaving in 2 minutes" kid throws a fit and screams NO NO NO, mom says " okay 5 more minutes, hey don't pour sand on the little boy or we are leaving.." I think you get my point. But just in case, read below: I don't think it is cool for kids to just come and take from other kids. I believe in sharing and I above all believe in teaching how to do this. I can't teach someone Else's kid how to share the ball, or go get his own. This place saved my family's life. It brought sanity to the insanity concept also knows as CHILDREN!! Awesome shade to get caffeinated as your children collect sand to dump all over your floor. I love this park! While you sometimes run into kids that are not being nice, and/or 13 year olds taking up the swings, and/or people who bring their dogs and lets them run loose while the signs clearly say otherwise, you run into this kind of situation at any park. So, that being said, let's rate the part it self and not the people. I love that it has two areas. My 4yr can still go back and forth between them. The playground structure themselves are somewhat new, and the whole organization of it is great. Right next to the playground is picnic and bbq areas. And then, there's the creek. You'll always find kids exploring and splashing around in there. read more

I have pretty much lived at Peri Park for the past 2 years. I'm probably there 3 or 4 times a week. I'm often the first mom there on a Saturday morning, so I go around the playground and pick up trash left behind by Friday night revelers. I've donated lots of shovels and buckets to the park, and have volunteered in the annual park clean-up day. I put lost and found items on the recycling bin, I tidy up the bulletin board, and I throw away the toys that are broken and potentially unsafe. I'm not writing all this to get brownie points. I'm just sharing the fact that for some of us, this is like our second backyard, and we really love and care for it. There is a community there and a lot of really cool moms, dads and caretakers. If you are new to the park, just smile and say hello to the moms or nannys hanging out on the benches. Some of the parents are a little lax with their kids, its true (this is Fairfax people!) But the park is big enough that if you see behavior you don't like, you can scoop up your little one and go play in another area. The amount of trash in the park and lack of enforcement is troublesome. Considering that this park is directly behind city hall and the police department leads me to believe little will change. Its a shame considering how beautiful the area is. "think globally act locally.'' read more
