I visited Mary's Pizza Shack while in town for a wine tour. I came with a very large group of friends. We had varied experiences but I will start with my own. I like to choose food options that I don't typically see other places. I ordered a seasonal item--the eggplant and artichoke sandwich. It was absolutely delicious! The bread was wonderful, the artichokes were big, the sauce was perfectly spicy and the crispy eggplant was very good. I ordered mine with a Cesar salad & I lovvvved the croutons. I wonder if they were made from the same focaccia as the sandwich. I would definitely recommend the place. Never been disappointed by this little off-shoot of Mary's! They have my favorite things all within minutes, breadsticks, Mary's famous salad and pizza. If you aren't wanting a longer sit down meal, check this place out! Options include taking lunch/dinner to the park and enjoying it at the picnic tables or sitting on one of the three seats indoors. The food was pretty good although I have 2 gripes. First of all, my boyfriend and I entered the building and went up to the front counter and he wanted to know if they had any pizzas coming out of the oven considering they were looking a bit bare. The baldish 50-something man at the counter replied with an annoyed almost offended look and paused (it's a simple question it could receive a simple response) and said um no this is the pizzas we have. The question being asked is if they had any pizzas currently cooking, not new flavors or styles of pizza or anything. Pretty weird to confuse this simple question. Anyways, he lacked any decent customer service skills which was quite unpleasant. The food was pretty good the other gripe I had is the music. This made us feel so comfortable dining here. There are a handful of tables outside {as when we came it was outdoor seating only in CA} - It seemed like most folks were taking theirs to-go. If you are dining outdoors there may be a bit of a wait but tables are cleaned between guests and properly spaced apart. Onto the good stuff! Perfect spot for a grab and go slice in Sonoma. After perusing through the historical downtown area, we were craving a little snack and followed our noses to Mary's Pizza Shack. Even better, next door to it was their to-go slice spot, or "Slice Shack." Ambiance was small but cozy, there were about 3-4 pizza flavors at the front. The one with the meat and mushrooms caught our eye. We decide to order one and the cashier offered to cut it in half for us. Waited for about 5-8 min for them to toast up the slice in their oven and when it came it looked freshly baked. Crisp crust, flavorful and fresh toppings, not too saucy. Polished it off in a few minutes. I was tempted to get another one, but I i held off- it was just a snack after all. Next time, I'll try the restaurant so I can sample more of the entrees. read more

Pizza was okay. It's by the slice so that means you order which ever slice you want from the ones already made and they place it back in the oven to heat up. Staff consisted of two young teenage boys and while we were eating inside, the manager from the main restaurant came over and started scolding the boys. He's tired of this and that and this needed to be done and all that... unprofessional to do that scolding while customers are in the lobby within hearing distance but whatever. read more

Honestly I wish they heated mine through just a tad bit more, but it was fine (it was just kinda warm). Seating - 3 stars - I would say don't count there on being seating at this place. Don't expect the best pizza you've ever had, because not happening. It's thick crusted doughy pizza and priced at $5-$5.50/slice, they're actually only slightly over priced, since they're huge slices. I couldn't even finish two slices and I was beyond full and I can eat pizza. This is the take out version of the sister restaurant. They do have a few tables and a few window bar seats, but for the most part, you're taking this to go. And heads up, their online menu is outdated. They do full pies. They don't have the whole caesar salad with chicken. Let's get the negative out of the way: the young dude taking my phone order and then was at the front at the cash register just wasn't helpful. He mixed up my phone order, I ordered 8 slices since their online menu didn't show full pies. He could have told me: "why don't you order a full pie?" instead of charging me for 8 individual slices. We arrived and I saw that, and thank heavens the manager ok'd it, we ended up saving $20. He quoted us 10 minutes, it was close to 30. Granted, we were talking to the manager about the mix-up, but still. He was not the most customer service oriented as we were waiting for our food. I don't blame him, since he looked all of 16, but he needs some customer facing training, for sure. The pizza was solid. If this was in the Bay or anywhere else I'd put it at 3 stars, but for Sonoma it did the trick. They make cheese pizza and then just add the toppings after. If I knew that, I wouldn't have ordered onions (which were huge cuts, so don't order onions). The meatball topping was sad. While we ordered the actual meatball which was delicious. The side caesar was just romaine with a hard boiled egg. Where was the chicken, croutons that the menu told us about? The dressing was good and the salad was fresh, so there's that. Overall, it's pizza. It's good. It's easy. Would I go out of my way for it? No. Would I eat it again if I was in downtown Sonoma and needed pizza to go? Yes. read more

Mary's Pizza Shack has aways been quality pizza in Sonoma and remember it from growing up and living in the neighborhood. I asked for a slice of the Mary's special which is basically a meat lover's dream for $5.50. (Salami, pepperoni, cotto salami, mushrooms, Italian sausage, mozzarella, pizza sauce.) We also ordered a slice of the pepperoni pizza which was available in slices at the counter. The slices themselves are quite large and the value is good for the price! My slice was bland tasting which surprised me considering how much meat was on it! The crust had a heavy taste of flour and there wasn't much sauce. I guess it did the job and that's about it. The meatball in a breadbowl awesome. It's a monster size but manages to not be dry in the middle. Sauce surprised me - not sweet, not too acidic, and overall great flavor. I don't think I could bring myself to eat pizza in California but if I came back I might try it on the strength of the sauce. I was at a bachelorette party weekend with 19 girls. I repeat. 19 girls I was in charge of making things go well (Of course) and after doing my bridesmaids duties for over 30 hours, your girl was starving. I needed carbs. We pulled up at a nearby winery and was told that they'll allow take out from surrounding joints to be eating along with our juice. Say no more, says I! I Yelp-ed the nearest slice and this was it. I ordered two slices and they were A-ok, as my Yelp rating suggests, good, but not exceptional. A star for sheer size though, as this were some of the biggest by the slice options I'd ever ordered. The price per slice makes sense when you see the amount you get. Temperature wise, mine was a bit on the lukewarm side, but I enjoyed it overall. Service was also backed up and slow. Covid- open for takeout. First off, let me just say the staff was so so nice! We literally showed up 15min before closing time and they were extremely nice. The slices are huge and worth every penny. I customized mine with chicken, jalapeños, and pineapple, it was really good despite them just adding the topping to a pre cooked cheese slice. The pesto sticks are a MUST try as well. Do yourself a favor and just skip this place. The pizza is wildly mediocre. The Hawaiian pizza should be called a just a ham pizza. Slice places should live and die by their cheese pizza and it really seems like they're not interested in it, it's not even on display. As we were pretty full from wine and cheese platters, we felt a few slices of pizza would suffice. We arrived on Saturday in November around 7pm with no wait. We both decided on Mary's as we enjoy meaty/combo type pizzas. One of ours came from a tray that was on display and the other came straight from the oven. They warmed the slices up for us which took just a few minutes. You could tell which one was fresher, but none the less it didn't affect us much. Overall it was a tasty, hearty pizza and we were satisfied. There are a few spots to sit inside (maybe 5?) and about 2 tables outdoors. Ordered one slice each of the "Mary's" (all meat) and the "La Ramona" (vegetables). Each slice is about 10" wide at the crust end by 12" to the point. The meat dough was reminiscent of Pizza Inn 20 years ago, a little spongy in a good way with a crisp, crunchy bottom. I felt there could still be more meat, but it was acceptable. Could have used a little more flavor. Especially in the sausage and pepperoni, I definitely expected more flavor to counter the neutral dough. By comparison, the "La Ramona" was disappointing. Bland and the bottom was not crispy, nor was the dough as thick, so it was chewy and not as interesting texturally or flavor wise. Add your standard grated parmesan, dried oregano, hot pepper flakes, and if so inclined, the "Calabrain Chili Pepper Sauce" they have available which tastes like smooth tomato sauce with a kick--in order to add more textures to each bite, and a bit more flavor. The staff was friendly and nice. They did ask if we were eating in or if it was to go, however, they forgot to ask us if we wanted a box or a paper boat. We ended up with a box, which wasn't environmentally friendly when it is unclear if they recycle the boxes which are piled high in all the "trash/recycle" bins they have by the door when you leave. We would have asked for the paper boat. They have paper straws available for those who want to use them. Would I return? Maybe, but I'd be more aware of asking about a crispy bottom as you order. It's not the best pizza I've ever had, which goes to Rosso in the states, or places in Europe. But it is acceptable and fills your hungry gut when you need a hit.
