We had passed Twin Pines while traveling so we went back to see if they had availability. The office was closed so we decided to take an empty site for the night. In the morning the campground manager and owner were amazing. Super friendly and accommodating. She even gave us some breakfast, a fridge magnet and a sticker. Such great people. The desk clerk was behind a barrier and wearing a mask. Patrons are required to wear a mask to enter the office. Hand sanitizer and single use wipes were available. The property is well cared for and very clean. The towels were thick and fluffy. Our bed was comfy. Our room included a nice reading chair by the large windows that overlook the river. The coffee maker, fridge and microwave were in good repair. A very nice choice if you find yourself in Landers, Wyoming.

We stopped in Lander, Wyoming for a few days, so we decided to check out the Sinks Canyon State…read morePark. Good decision! Sinks Canyon is so named because of a rushing river that flows out of the mountains and through the canyon. Halfway down, the river turns (sinks) into a cavern and runs underground for 1/4 mile where it emerges in a pool called "The Rise". In the Rise there are Rainbow and Brown trout; the larger ones may weigh up to 12 lbs, but NO FISHING! For a quarter you can buy fish food to feed the fish, which is fun for everyone. A must-do if you are in the area! Also check out the Visitor Center. It is small, but is one of the best I've seen, and I've seen many. The wildlife is well displayed; and I loved the wildflower displays. The geologic rocks outside the visitor center are also A+. Well done, absolutely 5 stars.

The not great; The size! Seriously, our "overnighter" single queen room was so tiny. I mean it was by far the smallest single queen room we experienced in a 10 day road trip through CO and WY that included 3 similar vintage renovated motels. There were NO tables and NO countertops in the room. No place to sit an ice bucket (which they provide and we kept in the sink). No place to put a drink or cup of tea/coffee unless you want to have it in bed (there was also only one chair). No place to put grooming items in the bathroom. Just felt really poorly thought out. Lastly - this room was so expensive compared to similar lodging we stayed in. And by similar I mean vintage motel renovations so much alike that these people must all watch the same mid century motel reno YouTube channel. This motel was fully 2x the price - and less than half the room in terms of space and thoughtful design - as a nearly identical motel we stayed in. I mean right down to the window shades and the FLOR tiles. The Lander Motel was by far both the priciest and our least favorite stay out of 8 different lodging choices on this trip. It was definitely in last place among the 3 mid century renovated motels we stayed in. Honestly, this place may have suffered from comparison - but we would have had the same issues regardless. It just doesn't function well. At least this type of room didn't for us as a couple. Maybe the larger rooms have more functionality. We just felt that the experience didn't justify the pricing. Finally, he called someone on the phone who was able to locate my reservation. IN the meantime, I looked around the lobby: dirty walls, smelled funky, worn carpet, and fraying furniture. This place is nothing like the pictures they post online. By the way: the Best Places rating they brag about online is from 2018! When I spoke to the person on the phone, I told him I did not want to stay and asked if I would be charged if I chose not to stay. He said "NO" I would not be charged. I left and found another hotel in town for my wife and I. Now that I am home, I checked my credit card and see that I was charged the full amount. I called the Motel to discuss and spoke to the same person as before: he lied and said we never talked about canceling and he never said I would not be charged. I am disputing the charge with my bank. Bottom line: this is not a nice place and is staffed with people who only want your money. Read the recent reviews of this property and move on. It is not what is represented.

The Dining room is set and you eat with other campers and hikers. They even let me ring the dinner triangle to let everyone in the cabins and around the lodge know that dinner was ready. We took an eight mile, over night hike to view Bridger Wilderness. The crew does pack trips, which means they will meet you on the trail with a pack horse full of supplies. This was so helpful. We are not the most experienced of hikers, and to have this option was perfect. We also took a day long ride on horseback. They packed us a lunch, and we took a guided trail ride. It was amazing! The horses were so friendly. While I am an experienced rider, my husband had never been on a horse. They have horses for all experience levels. Wayland (his horse) was perfect for him, and Rita was perfect for me. Everything about our trip was very authentic. From the dinner triangle, to the horses. From Stan teaching us about the "Tarzan call", and the other man cracking the whip and teaching one of the other campers to do it. Each morning and night there was a wood fire in the lodge, and a relaxing place to sit and visit, or play a board game by lantern light. Big Sandy is a family run lodge and everyone treats you as if you are part of their family.

They gave us a good amount of information on the area while we were having our burger. After we ate a storm blew through. They were welcoming and we stayed while the weather blew through. Jessica played us in a game of scrabble until she had to get back to work (taking the win with "chows"). We didn't stay at the lodge - they were booked.
