It did fill up as time went on, but there is a 90 minute limit on tables, although I'm not sure how strictly enforced it is. I ordered a few brunch items for delivery. Those included the Spicy Tuna Bowl, a side of Chicken Sausage and a Grilled Cheese Sandwich. The delicious tuna bowl included fresh seared tuna (done about medium rare), avocado, cucumber, radish, arugula, wasabi nori, cilantro-pepino quinoa with a generous dousing of tamari-ginger vinaigrette and a spicy aioli. I was not a great fan of the quinoa seasoning, but I never cared much for cilantro so that's on me. If I were to order again, I would get the regular quinoa bowl and add the seared tuna. The chicken sausage was very tasty, as was the grilled cheese. Delivery was fast, and packing was perfectly done. A rainy Sunday morning brought us to Slate Cafe in the Turtle Bay neighborhood of the lower East Side of Manhattan. The cafe is cute and modern inside. Order at the counter from the menu on the wall or handheld copies found inside. A decent amount of seating is available with a half dozen two tops and 2 8 tops with a smattering of window counter seats. The cafe was busy and most seat taken, a few by study/work folks oblivious to the need to turn tables on a busy weekend. We ordered coffees and entrees and crossed our fingers hoping to find seats. After a few minutes we secured a pair of window counter seats and counted ourselves lucky. The coffees were warming and tasty. Our entrees arrived and we dug in. My wife ordered the mushroom omelette and I had the avocado burratta sandwich. My wife loved her omelette as it was hot and hardy. My sandwich was tasty but battled to stay with the confines of the bread. A crispy piece of prosciutto would add some crunch and some structure, perhaps a suggestion worth taking. All in all we enjoyed our respite from the rain and enjoyed our visit to the Slate Cafe. read more

Had a lovely breakfast with a friend here on a weekday morning! The Midtown East location is mid-sized and bustling from 8 am onwards, but the line moves quickly. There is quite a bit of seating, but the place fills up quickly and is a bit noisy. This is better suited as a social or catch-up breakfast, brunch, or lunch spot, rather than a "work from home" spot. My friend got a tea, and I ordered a cortado and the "Breakfast Bowl." The cortado was high-quality, and the Breakfast Bowl was SO good, I had to write a Yelp review specifically to shout it out. :D The food pricing is pretty standard for the area ($13-18), but the portion sizes are huge, and this dish in particular was incredibly flavorful. Nice looking place with table seating and big counters to sit at. The sandwich menu is limited but they also have a pretty large "all day breakfast" selection to choose from and some salads. I was feeling like a sandwich and got the rustic chicken. Presentation was beautiful and ingredients were all fresh. The chicken was tender, but lacking a little flavor. The balsamic vinegrette was good, and if there was some more of it on the sandwich it would've added flavor. The first couple times we went here I loved it unreservedly... however the Nomad location is perfectly awful for ambiance- the design of the restaurant was created without any attention to acoustics whatsoever and it is literally one of the noisiest spaces I've ever inhabited in Manhattan. However the midtown location is pleasant, has ample seating and some wood and plaster to absorb the din. Now for the food. My daughter and I are obsessed with the matcha yoghurt bowl which is actually half chia pudding and half matcha yoghurt- a creamy meltingly smooth jade green whip with a subtly sweet flavor. The deviled egg trio was nice on a morning I needed a savory flavor and a protein boost. I tried the Avo toast as well and find the bread much too hard. There's a gluten free option but the flavor of that is meh. On the drink side, my daughter and I are also kind of obsessed with the London fog Vanilla oatmeal latte, but I have to say that this drink is really hit or miss depending on which barista is preparing it. It seems like sometimes they overdo the vanilla and sometimes forget it all completely, and then the other day the oat milk was less than fresh, or perhaps it was that the milk had been slightly burnt it is a delicate milk, unlike real milk or almond it tends to get scorched more quickly, so perhaps that's what I was tasting after all in any case I really do like this restaurant a lot and I need to try more of the menu items the bowls look Particularly delicious so I will definitely be back to update my review. read more

It can be crowded during the day, but love coming here for the grilled cheese with bacon. They have gluten free bread but it's not a gluten free facility. The side salad that it comes with is plain. I've tried the hot matcha latte from the nomad location and I passed by this cafe in midtown and decided to try the cold option. I love the hot matcha so I had high expectations again. This matcha was just as delicious as the hot one. I got it with oat milk unsweetened and it was nice and strong. Only critique was that it was a little clumpy towards the end compared to the hot version but totally fine after a few stirs. Will definitely be a regular for the matcha! Perfect place for a casual breakfast! We wanted to get an early start one morning, so we walked to Slate less than half a mile from our place. I've been waiting for the opportunity to try it since we read about the lawsuits and the really hard time they got from a new coffee chain that had a similar name. During Covid, after lockdown but way before anyone was eating indoors, we stopped at a little coffee shop called Blank Slate, on Madison Avenue in the 30s. The barista was so nice. Made me a pretty and very good cappuccino and a decaf Americano for my husband, and he carried them out to the sidewalk shed where they'd set up seating. I later found out that it was a family owned business with a few spots around the City. They've since had to change their name to simply Slate, and there's a location in our neighborhood! Anyway, this visit to our local Slate, hubs had the mushroom scramble and an Americano. I had the breakfast pizza, yum, and a skim cappuccino. The food was good, the coffees were strong. You order at the counter, get a number, someone brings the food to you. We waited under 5 minutes for a table, put our coats down, ordered, and when it came, we definitely enjoyed the breakfast! While the maple latte was alright--pretty standard all things considered--I was pretty surprised by the smoked salmon bagel (perhaps I should've checked some reviews before ordering it). This is my go-to crowdpleaser spot for a casual, delicious breakfast. Whenever I have people visiting and we want something quick and satisfying to start our day, Blank Slate is the top choice. It's counter service with plenty of seating, including some nice outdoor pods. I have tried bringing my computer and doing work here before since there are a lot of tables, but even on a weekday this place will get pretty busy and LOUD. Definitely more of a spot to come with friends than a good working cafe. My fave order here is the bacon egg & cheese sandwich -- SO good that I get it every time! The salmon bagel and quinoa bowl are great too. To me, all of the food has a very fresh quality that separates this cafe from other similarly casual breakfast cafes in the area. There is great wifi, and lots of tables and seating space. I wish they had more outlets (I could not find any), but besides that, a great cafe! Many people order to-go coffees. We met an interesting woman who works at MOMA and is an artist. (We met her because we asked her to take our picture). You never know who you will meet.
