I really must have caught this place on an off day. My fish tacos were supposed to be with fried fish (I asked the woman at the counter specifically and she said absolutely) but they came with grilled fish, and instead of being served with onion rings like the menu said they came with curly fries. The tacos were unfortunately bland and there was way too much onion. Even after letting most of it fall off, there was still an overpowering onion flavor. The real miss of the day was the chowder. In addition to being bland like the tacos, it just wasn't done yet. There was separated starch chunks in it, the potatoes were still crunchy, and in the three bites I tried there was sandy grit in each one meaning the clams weren't properly cleaned. I could see how if this recipe were executed well that it would be good chowder, but it was not. It was very very bad. They don't have a phone number up, so you can't call if something goes wrong. I'm going to go head back and politely ask for the money back on my soup. The tacos are what they are and I already ate them. But this experience was so bad it made me open up Yelp and leave a review right away. UPDATE: It turns out the lady working there was not good at communicating that she didn't understand english. In my best attempt at Spanish I told her "I don't know if you don't understand me" and while she gave me my money back for the soup, she was otherwise dismissive and never apologized. I don't know about anything else on this menu but I just had the best soft serve cone I have ever had in my life. I walked up feeling blue, one of those days. I had driven a half hour to Oceano Beach, not realizing that the space in nature that I had chosen to pray at and stare at the waves was for vehicles, not wanderers. It was a great location for all those families who wanted to pop open their trunks and be loud and grill hot dogs all day. But not so much for quiet me who just wanted to relax and think. It was amusing, but not ultimately peaceful. As I trekked for blocks back to a car that I didn't realize I could have parked on the beach for five bones, I saw this shack. I started to walk past, having not woken up in the morning craving a cone but I saw it on the poster, next to their sandwiches and such. That swirly, icy confection - something about it said, "comfort." Someone in front of me had the same idea and had ordered two. They were colossal, so when I stepped up, I asked for less ice cream. The server looked at me, confused, and said something to another worker, who looked slightly askance. The server came back to me and said, "How about I put it in a cup, so you can have both?" Where do you offer to give a business a break and they choose to indulge you anyways? Maybe when you look sad, and seem like you need a little lift. Mission accomplished. That ice cream was so authentically good. Creamy, cold, no artificial aftertaste. The chocolate tasted like chocolate and the vanilla like vanilla. It didn't dissolve into foamy chemicals. I enjoyed the sweetness down to the last drop, with the delicious accompaniment of a decent, crunchy cone. Food sometimes is the food of life. A blessing. This place use to be a dessert shop, so it was good to see something really take advantage to this spot. Love the seating and atmosphere. Just like everything it's a little over priced. We got fish and chips which were decent lacked flavor and the batter was too soft. Hot chicken sandwich was good. Good portion of chicken and the coleslaw was good. Tri tip sandwich was good and flavorful. Sliced thin so it was easy too eat. By far had the most flavor out of all of it. We also got a corn dog which the batter was super soggy. The curly fries are good. Ice cream cones good. Just work on the serving. 2 of the 3 cones the ice cream fell. All in all they need to add salt/season more and fry a little longer to get the batters/fries crispy. read more

A Little hole in the wall type of restaurant, but right by the beach with outdoor seating. The people working the ordering are also the cooks. Be patient when you are there, it'll be worth it. My family and I went offroading in the dunes one day and hung out on the beach another. Both fays we ended up grabbing dinner from slappys. Portion of food was more than enough. We ordered the tri tip sandwich, fish n chips, shrimp n chips and clam chowder. First day we ordered and ate on the beach in the back of our gladiator. Second day we ate on the beach again, but inside the gladiator while I aired up our tires. Did not get a picture of tri tip sandwich. Was too good to stop for a picture. Smoked tri tip, you can taste the smokiness. We also ordered a side of onion rings, all were very good. There were much more that we wanted to try. It'll have to wait til our next trip. Full disclosure - we only grabbed snacks from Slappy's. My daughter got shaved ice. Exactly what you'd expect. My wife and a friend ordered the churros - they were hot and cinnamony/sugary with just the right crips on the outside while being hot and soft on the inside. They may have been made fresh as I watched them roll them in the sugar/cinnamon before serving them to us. My some and I both got soft serve cones and it was delicious. They filled them all the way to the bottom of the cone instead of just on top like most places. There was ice cream in every bite! Will definitely be grabbing some more food from Slappy's in the future. read more

Don't let the giant pictures of random greasy food turn you away. This place is ACTUALLY REALLY GOOD! The tri tip sandwiches are fantastic and look nothing like the pictures to be honest. They are even better! Minus one star for the price (but hey, you are the ding dong that forgot to bring enough food in your ice chest right?) so go ahead and get your dinner here and start preparing for your long drive home on Sunday to wherever you came from. If you're visiting pismo beach, this is the place to go for some good clam chowder and fish tacos! The clam chowder was perfectly seasoned and had a good amount of clams. The creaminess and thickness were perfect. We also ordered the fish tacos, and wowww it was loaded! Perfectly crispy and had a hint of spice. Also came with some onion rings, which was a plus! Exactly what we were looking for! We are camping at the Oceano camp ground just down the street and wanted something warm and filling, this hit the spot! We got the fish and chips, large clam chowder and a churro. The fish and chips comes with 3 pieces but they were kind enough to add another piece (paid as a side) so it was all perfect to share! All 3 items were delicious and I highly recommend! They don't have hours listed anywhere but from our experience I know they open at 8am on Saturday and Sunday and closed around 8pm, hope this helps! read more

For a beach front establishment this is terrific. FYI there is no phone number to call. It is an owner run business and they take pride in what they do. Great menu to choose from. The owner brought us a sample of their tri tip and wow it was fantastic. We split a small cup of clam chowder and the 1/3 pound burger with pepper jack cheese and curly fries. Everything served hot and fresh and taste was very good. Clam chowder has some bacon in it which makes it unique. Great service and great food. We will be back. read more

Honestly food was really good but after the fact, I realized they charged me a tip without my permission. We went back the following day and the cashier told me the total is $43.70 but they added an $8.15 tip to my card without asking me. When I asked the cashier about it, they said that it is automatically added once the total reaches over $20. I am extremely frustrated by this as it was not posted anywhere. The staff member seemed frazzled when I inquired about the tip. Also, when they charged me they did not offer me a receipt, I had to explicitly ask for it, that should have been my first red flag. As an update a year later, the portions are way smaller, but the prices appear to be too. It was noon so they let me get one of the four different types of breakfast burrito, even though it was past the time they serve breakfast. My wife got her favorite tri-tip sandwich. They were both reasonably portioned, and the prices were quite good. We did finish all our food this time, and it was all delicious. The meat is tender and smoky, and the fries crisp. Normally I would give this place five stars but I have to give it three stars today. We flew over and landed at the local airport just for clam chowder. At 11:25 they had no clam chowder yet. It's literally why we came here. If the largest picture on your menu is clam chowder in a bread bowl you should probably have that. Other than that I've had good experiences in the past.
