I've been following Slanj on Facebook for a little while now, and once I saw the Clyde Built shirt, I knew I had to get it for my Glaswegian husband. I messaged Slanj through FB and they responded right away that they ship to the US, so I placed my order online. Super easy! The communication was absolutely top notch! After ordering, I was kept up to date as it was processed and provided a tracking number. This is the first time I've actually been able to track a package from the UK to the US successfully. Slanj Originals (right next door to original Slanj - yes it is slightly confusing) is more orientated than it's big brother. They focus on Scottish themed clothes like Batman t-shirts, but instead of the original Batman logo, it's a bat made out of thistles, and there's a similar superman-esq one too. Or, as I bought my American friend, an "I (HEART) Boys in Kilts" T-shirt. And, for the men, 'Bawbags' boxers. Classic. The shop assistants are brilliant and helpful - only too happy to help you find something that you need, or want (sizes, colours, etc). Maybe slightly too expensive to be a novelty shop, but if you need anything Scotland themed (that isn't a 'See You Jimmy' hat, or 100% tartan), I'd go here. read more

One of the many City Centre highlandwear shops where you can get a good deal on kilt hire. It's hard to miss, on the corner of St. Vincent Street, and once inside it is a very nice shop with striking displays of highlandwear that get your attention. The prices for kilt hire are competitive, with student discount offered. The time I went, my fitting was speedy and professional and most important, hassle free. I have hired kilts for lots of occasions from various places including Moss Bros and Gilt Edged and would rate Slanj somewhere in between these two, with Moss Bros being too expensive and Gilt Edged being the best place I have been probably, with a good price offered and casual arrangements made for pick up and drop off to suit me, not them. Slanj have some really amazing gear in here that I would love to buy, but cannot afford. For kilt hire, I would recommend it. read more

Slanj Kilts is a great shop offering a welcome alternative to the high-street shops. The store is part of the Slanj Kilts shop and caters to patriotic Scots and tourists. The t-shit and hoody designs are cool, particularly the Royal Exchange Square traffic cone design. The baby kilts are also very very cute;I know that my boyfriend is very tempted to buy one if his sister-in-law has a baby boy. Slanj is getting a star alone for it's name. It's hilarious, to me it sounds like a naughty word, I'm not sure why... but it makes me giggle every time I see it. Just off the Royal Mile, Slanj stocks all manner of Scottish themed clothing. Some for practical formal wear but other a little bit more fun and aimed at tourists. I completely agree with Marj that Slanj is a much better bet if you're looking for Scottish themed clothing as Slanj stocks much more stylish and wearable pieces than you would find in the likes of the tourist tat shops along The Mile. read more

Ok, so I'm a bit of a sucker for these t-shirts that have Scottish stuff written on them. Who doesn't let out a we chuckle when staring at a 'Che You Jimmy' shirt? So when it came time to pick out a present for the old-man (father in law) I popped in here. Beyond the t-shirts, this place just strikes you as a less than fusty kilt hire/purchase type place. There is nothing twee, och aye the noo or heavily stereotypic about this joint. It just reeks of a bit o class. Price wise, i have no idea what the costs are for hire. I do know though, that a cool T costs a manageable 20 notes! Not bad for a place that could (if they so desired) rip that arse out of tourists. So for that and many other things, I reckon this wee store is crackin and well worth a visit for some rather upmarket scottish stylee gift-eroonies. Hoots read more

Slanj Originals is good idea for people like me, who want to go to a Scotland game, but don't want to wear a football shirt. I got a nice wee t-shirt, although I probably should have got a hoodie 'cos I ended up freezing and my pretty t-shirt remained unseen under my zipped-up coat. The t-shirts have a good dry Scottish wit about them, but my favourite thing ever has to be the baby kilts. They are soo cuteee and if they werent so expensive, my two wee nephews would each have one from me. read more

We had Great Experience with Slanj Kilts! They measured all the boys in a professional and friendly manner in their store for the Ancient Patriot Tartan. On our big day the kilts/jackets and all the other bits looked amazing and were all in a perfect condition. Would highly recommend Slanj if your looking to hire a kilt! My only regret now was that we hired rather than bought them as after seeing our pictures I wish my husband had this kilt for all our formal events! Do you remember when Scotland's national football team were doing sort of alright for a while, back when they beat France in France and it was the first time any team had done that in 20 odd years? That was before they broke our hearts in the last qualifying match with Italy. My point is that it was around that time that I started going to watch our national team play (I'm a glory seeker I know but I had to make the most of it while it lasted!) and I needed an appropriate outfit. Not being a footie shirt kind of girl I hot tailed it to Slanj. I had been looking online for a ladies kilt and the only ones I could find were either the tarty bum cheek exposing type used as part of a school girl outfit or the horrible frumpy over the knee type. As such I was delighted to see the perfect ladies kilts for sale in Slanj. The one I bought was a proper thick, tartan, wrap around kilt with leather waist straps and buckles. It sits about 6 inches above the knee which is perfect for that "look at me I'm a cute Scottish lass" look without looking like a slapper! It wasn't cheap at neary £70 but surpisingly enough, I have actually gotten a lot of wear out of it! I've worn it to the football, for halloween, for ceilidh dances and on holiday While in Slanj I also picked up a pink lion rampant top and matching hoodie. The hoodie is super cozy and I wear it all the time around my flat on cold nights as well as on any occassions when I am sporting my kilt! I think Slanj is a great shop for novelty Scottish gear as well as traditional kilts. The clothes, hats and other accessories are the same as what you pay for clothes, hats or accessories in any high street fashion store but the quailty is really really good. My hoodie and top both wash brilliantly and it's great to be able to buy some patriotic gear that isn't cheap, tacky and touristy looking! read more

It's not like me to praise anything overtly Scottish, but I have to admit I like the manner in which Slanj has dragged the twee and parochial world of traditional Scottish clothing into the modern age. The shop looks and feels quite contemporary, and in addition to the usual kilts and sporrans and the like, there's Scottish themed t-shirts and casualwear that looks a lot better than the sweatshop "Bonnie Scotland" hoodies you'll see for sale up the Royal Mile. Some of it even manages to be a bit self-aware. Far better than most of the tourist trap kiltmakers that litter the city. read more

Bringing the tourist t shirt into the 21st century, Slanj are a contemporary store that specialise in making tongue in cheek Scottish themed clothing. Along with selling some smart, stylish clothing, Slanj stands out from other tourist shops on the high street because its T shirts are ironic, clever - and actually pretty cool. You can expect to find a homage to the fabulous Tunnocks Teacake, immortalised on a t shirt print, not to mention some prints of a map of Scotland, depicted as the rainy place it is. Some of the t shirts are so cool I've seen Scottish guys buy them, most notably clothing from their Bawbags range. The Scottish independent designer label can be found in many skate shops, and proceeds from sales go to chairty. Taking on an Etnies, skater sort of style, their t shirts and boxers are quite cool street wear, and popular with younger Scottish guys. If I could give tourist shoppers a wee hint, I would nudge them in the direction of Slanj. Especially if they are going cross eyed looking at insipid "Bonnie Scotland" tees all the live long day. read more

Terrible experience. Had to contact Edinburgh 2 days before my sisters wedding, to find out there's a problem and can't complete the order. A soiled jacket. No consideration to contact me before I called them today. When I went in for the refund they didn't have enough money in the till to refund me, despite me saying I'd be in to collect it. A very difficult time for my family has just been made worse by Slanj Kilts. I may as well have bought a cheap bit of tartan cloth from one of the many tourist shops on the Royal Mile for all the good renting with these guys has done me. Was led to believe they were different as they had the only Light Grey Crail jacket in Edinburgh. Huge let down. read more

I have bought several items from this shop, however will not be darkening their door again. The customer service you receive from one of the owners and most of the staff is atrocious. I have worked in the customer service industry for over 16 years and if any of my staff even dared treat a customer in the way Slanj staff do, they would be whisked into a disciplinary meeting and retraining before the customer had left the store. Sadly the staff can only work in the manner they are managed. Poor show for a FANTASTIC brand. read more

Scouting around Glasgow for kilts for the wedding party and found this place to be among the worst shops i have ever had the misfortune of stepping into... The staff in this shop would be as well working in the collection area of an Argos branch.. Further to my complaint I highlighted the issue to them via Facebook, Twitter and email. First response was that they removed my message from Facebook as they "didn't want customers to see it". I re-posted and eventually they replied saying it wasn't their fault. A few hours later and email came through and no response from Twitter. They have since removed my complaint from their FB page once again which I find completely unacceptable, they should be able to respond to a comaplaint positively and not just censor it. **Update as response to managers comment ** Also, despite finally answering via social media (before answering my email proving that social media was the fastest way to elicit a response) they still did not address that we were told the item would be instore in a week and therefore by responding a week and a half later (after their self-imposed timeframe) we were sorely let down. Leaving a voicemail that says "I assume you don't want it ordered" when we thought it already had been was not the best way to handle it. A phonecall where you actually SPOKE to my Fiance, gave an apology and an offer of an alternative (which only came AFTER my complaint so not as helpful as they are trying to make out) would have been far more acceptable. Unfair comments? They were factual so Yes, incredibly unfair to us. Unfair to Slanj? As I said, factual. We chose to go elsewhere to a kiltshop that had the items in stock with excellent customer service (Hector Russell) as we could not risk the wedding outfits at this late stage. Let down by Slanj Didn't honour order for our wedding We ordered a waistcoat from you nearly 2 weeks ago and told it would be in in a week as it was ordered in plenty of time. A week and a half LATER you call and leave a voicemail to say you can't get the waistcoat in and it won't be in until the end of Aug AFTER our wedding and therefore too late for him to wear on the day. Why did it take so long to lt us know and knowing that you were going to be messing up the wedding outfits, why did you not see fit to talk to us directly with an apology (ie politely phone back) rather than a message from Neil saying I assume you don't want it ordered (he's yet to confirm this I might add)? I'm just sorry my Fiance went into your shop, I'd advised him not to due to customer service I had already received (one of your staff didn't know what and Argyle jacket was) but he mistakenly thought I meant another shop. Shame as now his wedding outfit is ruined. Customer service seems to mean nothing to Slanj, I would not recommend them in any way and I shall be telling everyone I know getting married (4 in the next 6 months at last count) not to risk their weddings on Slanj. Hi, My son was married in Utrecht in May. He hired his outfit from Slanj in Edinburgh as did his father, both his brothers and his best man. We had to take them all over on Easyjet flights to Amsterdam, and managed to get them there in one piece, despite the volcanic ash. We had the five outfits there for a week and the fee was really reasonible. The outfits really helped to make the wedding extra special. Thanks for a great service. read more
