Well, I'm alive!
Overall, it was a solid experience. We made an appointment for a Sunday afternoon - you really need to book in advance. I was hoping to add on one additional person a few days before, but they were pretty full so my friend couldn't go. You could also try calling every so often, to see if a spot has opened up due to someone canceling. They do take down a deposit to guarantee your slot. We did the tandem dive at 9,000 ft. - Groupon purchase from last year.
We arrived at our scheduled time. We checked in and opted to pay an extra $99 for photos & DVD. You have to pay for this ahead of time - can't view the DVD & photos and then decide to purchase later. This makes sense as each diver gets a photographer assigned to them - the photographer will follow you around from the time of pre-jump to the landing part. I would suggest purchasing the DVD & photos, as for most of us, it's a once in a lifetime experience. You do get a free t-shirt with the video package. The shirt is a bit fugly, but it make a nice gym/sleeping shirt :)
After checking in, we waited in a room to sign the waiver forms. It's a bit intimidating, as you're basically saying if the company screws up (or if something happens), you're on your own. After waiver forms, the instructor goes over the diving procedure and what to do & not to do. There's also a video that we get to watch. Our session had about 8 to 10 people. After it's all done, we wait around the facility waiting for our names to be called. Typically, you should be able to dive with your party. You suit up and meet the person you'll be diving with. The suits are a bit cheesy, especially with the hood on - reminds me of a Power Rangers outfit. Once the plane is ready to go, we file in - there were probably about a dozen people on that plane - divers, instructors, and photographers. The plane climbs to the right altitude and one by one (or pair by pair), people jump out.
Once it's your turn, you're pretty much thinking to yourself "Uhhhh....really, you want me to jump out into THERE??" I'm actually scared of heights, and while I wasn't terrified, I was a bit scared. However, after you collect yourself after free falling for 5 seconds or so, it really isn't that bad. Free falling through the sky has a different feeling than say jumping out a 14 story apartment window. Additionally, you have the photographer about 4 feet from you, which helps distract the scariness. After you free fall for X amount of seconds, the instructor pulls the chute and you slow down in speed. It's strange as while it was quite loud free falling, once the chute opens, all is quiet. Your instructor may also allow you to steer the chute a bit. Since the pace has slowed down, you can enjoy the view.
Landings will vary - we actually landed quite well. While you're not supposed to land standing up, we were able to as we had a soft and slow descend.
After landing, you get out of the Power Rangers outfit and wait for the photographer to process your photos and video. We waited for about 30+ minutes.
Overall, it was a nice experience. If you plan on only going skydiving once and prefer a longer free fall, I suggest upping to a higher altitude than 9,000 ft. I felt the free fall was rather short, but some people are OK just experiencing any amount of free fall. Make your appointments in advance and do arrive on time. read more
