This is an Anderson/Upstate SC staple, however not being from here, I don't necessarily understand the hype. Maybe it's a nostalgia thing? The hot dogs are cheap, small and good. But they're not something I yearn for. Chili is strange in that it looks like just ground beef. Once again, I think it's an Upstate thing. The star of the show would be the chocolate pound cake. When you go in, there's not many choices (which isn't an issue) but do know exactly what you want. read more

Yesterday I got got to experience my husband's favorite childhood treat. The original Skin's Hotdogs in the mill village in Anderson, SC! The place was very old, they have been around since the 40s, but clean. The service was fast and friendly. The dogs weren't anything special to me but they didn't taste bad. They only serve hotdogs ,slaw, chips and drinks. Don't ask for anything else....that's it! I guess having been around for 70+ years something is working pretty well. I'm glad I had the chance to share in such a good memory with my husband. Who knows, I might even go again. Check it out it's worth at least one visit. read more

My first visit there was ridiculous! My verbal order was directly made to the cashier about "no mayonnaise" on a single hotdog "just chili and mustard" and it was clearly ignored of my direction of what I wanted. So I called back, to let the manager know what was the issue and that the order was wrong. Long story short...after speaking the manager, he expressed that just because what she had wrote down on the order and she clearly misunderstood about "no mayonnaise, just mustard", they expressed that the order was correct but I'm the customer and what they had wrote down was incorrect. Almost got into an argument about what I wanted (the customer) Ridiculous! read more

I am a local and I do not see the reason why anyone would want to go. The hotdogs are limp and soft and the major downfall is you cannot get fries or onion rings only chips. If you want a cheap basic lunch, then go, if not do not bother. read more

As it was in my high school days, Skin Thrasher's specialty is the ultra-soft steamed buns, the weightless chili, crisp white onion, fresh relish, plentiful condiments and wonderful, handcrafted sides. They still serve Coca-Cola in ice cold glass bottles and as it was in my days at T.L. Hanna, there is a 2 beer limit with as many hotdogs as you can eat.... and no swearing. I've been eating Skin's hotdogs since I was old enough to eat solid foods. My ol' man is from Anderson. Skins was the first item on the agenda when we'd come visit my Nanny & Grandaddy. Since they have passed any chance we get to come to Anderson a couple dozen Skin's comes home with us. The chili is unique, dry, and delicious. The dogs are perfect on their little steamed buns. I have heard about Skins being the best hot dogs, so finally stopped in to try one. The all the way with chili, onions and mustard was probably the best hot dog I have ever put in my mouth. The soft roll really made me happy. Small enough make a great snack but you will probably want more than one. Next time I am in Anderson or Clemson, I will definitely stop in for another hot dog or two. read more

I insist on going to "Skin's" whenever I am at home! It's in the old Mill Area of Anderson. Don't let the neighborhood fool you...these are nice folks that just want to sell you a dawg. I like to sit at the lunch counter and I can say that I've never sat at a table so I don't know what that is like...could be a totally different place. My Skin's is the kind of place, you walk in, they say "what'll ya'ave" and since there isn't much to choose from you say you'll have two chili dawgs with mustard! There are no fancy paper plates...just a piece of pager to cradle the precious cargo from the kitchen to your spot at the counter! After you order said precious cargo materializes in less than 90 seconds...they keep them comin' too if two isn't enough! Now, save room for pound cake, cause if you're polluting yourself with two chili dawgs (or more!) you can damn well eat some pound cake too...you don't get home often! Once you've settled in...enjoy the endless clippings about Skin's, Clemson and the general greatness of a town like Anderson (the first to have electricity in SC!)! Oh and don't forget to watch the endless parade of characters too. This is a fine dining establishment that is good enough for the Mayor, the Sheriff, high caliber judges and important people and every single citizen in between! I ate my first Skin's hot dog about 40 years ago. I remember Skin Thrasher behind the counter serving hot dogs and a great personality. While some things have changed, the basic science that went in to that hot dog 40 years ago must be still in place since the taste hasn't changed. The two most significant changes for me is the switch from coke products to Pepsi products and the fact you can get cole slaw in a cup. The hot dogs are delicious with chili that is not the dark strong soupy chili you find on most hot dogs. Skins chili is mild and meaty tasting. A little hint on how to order; all the way means mustard, chili and onions but they are willing to make it anyway you want except for the cole slaw, that you must apply yourself. read more

The original location started by the man, myth, and legend Skin Thrasher,a pillar of the dining community during his time, walking in feels like you're back in 1950 Mayberry. I say this because there is a good lunch crowd of city employees like grounds crew and police officers, and a nice little small town cafe ambiance. The neighborhood has went downhill since its prime when there were mills all around, but don't let that fool you. My issue is more with a trend I have seen since the patriarch passed. I think their prices are a little too high and you're basically paying for a name. Now, it's a good hotdog but I know two other places in Anderson that have great hotdogs. One is a buck, and I have ate it next to a Skin's hotdog. They taste identical, but I'll allow the chili is a little better at Skins. The staff is usually very courteous but if you order your hotdogs different (other than all the way) they seem to go in the back and have some sort of laugh or pow wow. I even got questioned as to why I wanted my hotdog a certain way. Just take my money and make my food, ok? Also, some suggestions for the staff as well. Wait until I'm finished eating my hotdog before clearing my table or asking me if I want more. It comes across as rude and even dismissive. I know you're trying to give me good service, but I feel a little rushed. When you're paying $2 almost for a hot dog and nearly 2 bucks for a tiny bag of chips and another $2 for a drink, I think that entitles you to take your time and enjoy your meal. Because of my dine-in experiences I only get take out now. Maybe you should think about having a sale every once in a while, because you've gotten too expensive to serve your base. Keep it up on the nice, hometown atmosphere though. I love the sign that says "Church Language Only," or something to that effect. read more

Plain old hot dog. See my posts on diners. They claim to be world famous because people who come to Anderson want to eat the local faire. Frankly, if the president came to Anderson and asked were to eat, I'd be embarrassed to tell him Skins was the best that Anderson has to offer, especially considering I've been to Bens Chili Bowl in DC and that place is the real deal. At this point, I think people rate them so high because they are "supposed to like them". Just because your father or grandfather took you here when you were little and told you they were the best, doesn't mean they are. Food is a lot better now and we have many more options than we did in the 60's & 70's. A lot of people in Anderson will argue this with me but will be wrong, but the chili is not chili. It is just meat with seasoning in it...flavored meat. Speaking of Ben's, now that is Chili. The hotdogs are soggy and dull tasting. They are not gross, they are just not good. read more

It's an Anderson staple. I've had a Nathan's from the original Nathan's on Coney Island and Packo:s so if your expecting like those, you'll be disappointed. However, the original Skins dog is the best standard chili dog you'll find. The buns are always very fresh. Their chili is good and the service is good. If you only get to Anderson once make sure to go to this one because it is the original location and there's just something about the original place that gives it a nostalgic feel. read more

All Skins locations are good...but if you ever have a chance to visit the Original they just seem to taste better there. The menu is Hotdogs with chips,slaw and pickles for sides. I grew up on Skin's hotdogs. Being an Anderson County native, no trip to town was complete without a stop by the original Skin Thrasher's. Friday or Saturday summer afternoons when friends would gather at our house were marked by a huge sack of Skin's hotdogs served on the screen porch. Mr. Thrasher served a good hotdog at a fair price and cultivated a "landmark" restaurant. Recently, a friend, also a native Andersonian who grew up on Skin's hotdogs and has moved out west, was in town and we picked up some "all the way" to go from Skin's on Hwy 81N. He and I were both sorely disappointed in the taste and quality of what we got that day. I have eaten at several Skin's locations including the original Skin's. Each time, the hotdog just wasn't up to the quality it used to have. I thought it may just be me, but my friend who was visitng echoed my thoughts, "Skin's just ain't what it used to be." As it is now, these hotdogs would be only fair as "2 for a dollar" gas station gut fillers. At the current price of over $1.60 per hotdog, it is just a ripoff. What could have happened? Has Skin's overextended itself in its expansion? Are they charging more while cutting quality to make the bills? Do they just lack the dedication that Mr Thrasher had? That is a death knell for any business that has made its reputation on quality....be it hotdogs or whatever. I am sad to see an upstate institution go down the tubes like Skin Thrasher's has. read more
