It's that time of year again: I'm gearing up to hit the hills. In minus thirty weather, it's important to have the right gear so that you're enjoying the powder and not freezing your butt off. Being the stylish lady that I am, I also like to look good on the slopes. I'm pretty sure that the ski cellar has existed in Calgary for time immemorial, but their website says fifty years. Well, that's still a lot older than I am! This is the place my dad first took me to gear up when I was learning to ski, and I like to go back because of their excellent selection of gear. They have tons of stuff: jackets and goggles and balaklavas and my personal favourite, toques. They have a ton of actual gear too: boots and bindings and skis and snowboards for both adults and kids, which makes it a pretty good destination for individuals but an excellent one for families. The smart shopper catches their sales in the spring, but if you're just getting into winter sports the prices are pretty reasonable. I definitely have some love for the Ski Cellar Snowboard, and this is one of my favourite locations. read more

Love this place! I generally go to the one in Bowness, as I live close by. I've been on the hunt for a new ski coat for a while, but am super picky. After using the same jacket for 7 years, probably longer it wasn't even warm anymore and I was sick of being cold skiing. I found this awesome Burton AK jacket and the only location to have my size was this one. So we headed down. I can't remember the names, but it's an older lady and a total ski dude, both wicked nice and helpful. After a couple trips here I finally decided to bite the bullet and buy the jacket, and I am so glad I did. They know their products and they have tons of selection. read more

What do you do when you get a new board after 10 years and your old bindings don't clamp on? Call Ski Cellar Snowboard of course! I called in and the associate who helped me on the phone was great, he said they had the insert disk I needed, but I should come on down and make sure it fits in my binding. Since I live just up the hill and my bindings were already dismantled off my old board, I ran on down. They were crazy busy that day, since it was just after Boxing Day, but after one of the associate was available, he found the inserts the guy on the phone had, we put them in and they fit! The staff were really friendly. I had my old board tuned here last season and it was also a great experience, so I am happy my dealings in the sales department was awesome too. I will be coming back to Ski Cellar Snowboard to buy myself a new pair of bindings soon! I have already scoped out the pair I desire. At first I did not like this place because they sold me very expensive ski boot heaters that did not work, and worst of all was a really horrible day when they screwed up and they mistakenly changed the bindings on my skis. Long story short, I had brought in both my sons skis and my skis for waxing, and then both my sons bought new expensive ski boots..... my younger son and I both use identical DynaStar skis but mine are longer because I am taller than him. Mine are 167 and his are 153. Obviously because he bought new boots his findings needed to be changed on his skis.... Instead of changing HIS bindings they changed MY bindings by a good four inches. This involved not just shifting the bindings but literally drilling new holes in my almost new extremely expensive skis. Of course I didn't discover this mistake until I drove two hours away to ski with the family at Lake Louise. It took about four hours for the repair team there to fix it so instead of skiing with my family for 5 hours I only had an hour. Complete waste of my day- Almost 5 hours of driving for just one hour of skiing... and probably the most frustrated I've ever been in over a decade, I almost started crying when I realized how much they screwed it up.....They could've easily called to confirm they were drilling holes in the proper skis. Anyway, another irritation was my older sons expensive new boots did not fit as they were too large and of course he didn't realize this until after he skied on them.... Its very very important that his boots fit perfectly because he skis literally the most difficult double black diamond runs in the world and he is a ski instructor, they need to be a great fit or he could literally die going down the cliffs... Because the boots were used we cannot return them. He went in once for a couple of hours to try to get them fitted again properly and it still didn't work. Finally I called the owner and he was nice enough to give him one size down boots that fit perfectly and not charge us, therefore he has taken quite a loss because he is now going to have to sell these boots as used and probably half price. But it definitely turned around a customer service perspective for us it was very nice of him to go above and beyond plus it took about two hours of his time. In total in that two week period were probably in the store for about six hours. Skiing equipment adjustments is very very time-consuming. Anyway and then the added cherry on the cake was I went to their North location on the same day to pick up my skis which were being waxed and also repaired because I skied over a massive rock and I had a huge chunk taken out of my skis and they did the whole thing for me for free......Very very nice customer service and great to have two positive experiences in the same day! Turning Business away - Ski Cellar - A victim of its own Success? I am a very active alpine enthusiast. I live very close to the Ski Cellar location just off of 16th ave here in Calgary. I have stopped by from time to time to pick up the odd item or ask questions around a potential upgrade to my own quiver of ski's/ gear etc - being that it is close...on the way home from work....and you do have some really good deals towards the end of the ski season... I am not one to complain - but after my experience tonight - I thought I would put a few comments forward; My intent - to prevent you from losing customers that you may not be aware are going elsewhere. My 6 year old has been skiing for a few years now and we are looking to upgrade her ski's boots etc. I called ahead this evening, to ask how late you were open. I was told 9 o'clock - and was asked by the gentlemen who answered the phone what I was interested in. I mentioned that I planned to drop by with my daughter to look at a few different options for her. Surprisingly ; I was then told by the gentlemen on the phone that it would not be a good idea to drop by. He explained that " Normally the upstairs portion of the store is open, but we are very busy with rental returns today" and that " They are very short staffed" and " there would be no one to go up stairs and help us" and that I should drop by during the day. You have an excellent website. My daughter and I have looked at what you have available and had pretty much decided on what we were after. I think it is important for you to know that we went to your competition for the upgrade to my daughters ski's, boots, etc. It would probably have taken 20 or so minutes at the most, as it did at your competitors to iron out a few questions and finalize our decision. We would have paid and picked up the skis, boots etc when they were ready; and you would have had one more multi-product sale and another satisfied customer to add to your tales of ski rental success; unfortunately it did not work out that way... I am happy to hear the rental side of your business is going so well - and I hope the kind gentleman that I spoke to on the phone was able to get all of those rental skis put back in there proper place before the end of his shift. Not to worry; you have not lost a customer. I would say though that the experience that I had tonight might explain why you will see people like me in the spring when you are liquidating inventory that you should have sold during the season for your intended mark up. Before tonight I couldn't quite figure out why your racks were loaded with stuff that was marked down 30% to 50% off towards the end of the season...but now it makes perfect sense. Garbage!! That shop is absolute GARBAGE!! My borthers and I went there recently to look for Line (ski company) hoodies. We ask a sales lady up at the front and she says "Nope, don't have any." Turns out there was a whole rack dedicated to the product. They did not offer any assistance whatsoeever, they just stood around and mockign us behind our backs. You'd be better off going to sport chek for ski advice!!! read more
