This MEC store is like the one in Vancouver. So came here to see what they have on sale and might want to pick up some camping stuff. Well today was full pack of people. They must have some kind of events or discount. I do know that they have a calendar full of events and sales. Sales people are very helpful. But finding one who is not attending someone can be tricky. I mean they are all very very busy. I mean its nice to browse around.

I walked over the Calgary MEC to look for some hiking shoes. A work friend (with an MEC Card) joined me and warned that I could probably get this item cheaper at REI in the US. I then took a look at the prices, compared selection with Atmosphere across the street, and headed straight to the closeout section. I found a nice Columbia brand in my size that were comfortable and half off. They also did really well on the Plain of Six Glaciers (Lake Louise) the next day. This MEC Store is handsome, roomy over its 2 floors and has a really nice selection of stuff. The Associates were friendly, knowledgeable, and very helpful. When I arrived back in California, I went ahead and sent in my $5 for my own MEC Card. I will be returning to Canada sometime in the future, and you never know when a local MEC might come in handy.

Even if you're not necessarily the outdoorsy kind, there's a ton of things that Mountain Equipment Co-op carries that no other place in town is likely to have. My sister started training for a variety of different marathons and was partaking in The Amazing Race in her city. She needed one of those backpacks that carries only water & snacks, and I looked around in a million different places I couldn't find anything of the like. Finally, I went to Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC), and yes, of course, they had it, along with a variety of styles & colours. What I love about MEC is that it's ouber friendly, even for the non-jock type. I mean if it was even remotely pretentious there's a good chance a lot of us would never step foot into it. But it's welcoming, it's easy to find things, and it does truly carry just about anything you'll ever need for the 'outside world'. The prices are ridiculously reasonable, and the quality is the best you can get. The people that work there are helpful and the store itself is laid out so well that you can shop according to outdoor activity (Ie: Camping, Hiking, Cycling, etc.) Just a tip for those of you who have never been here before. You DO need an account/membership in order to shop here. Kinda like Costco. So when you get to the til, they will ask you for your membership phone number. What I do, is I just use my Mom's, and they are cool with that. So as long as someone in your family, or someone you know has an account with MEC, you can shop there. Another tip for all you newbies: Most MEC products are covered under a lifetime warranty. For example, if you ever buy a backpack from MEC and the zipper breaks, or it rips, they will replace it for you! The warranty isn't just a year or two, it's a LIFETIME warranty! How sweet it is!!! Next time you need to buy some specialty outdoor/sports goods, give MEC a try. I can pretty much guarantee that they'll have what you're looking for. You're welcome.

I have been a patron of MEC since the early nineties, when I used to live in the Yukon and one memorable stint of minus 40 degree weather in Yellowknife with a minus 60 degree wind-chill. Let's start with my basics, I got my first MEC membership in Vancouver and used to tote my blue MEC bag, you know one of the first over the shoulder and off to the side portfolio bags of the 90s. This lasted me throughout my university incarnation, I thought I was fashionable and savvy, it was waterproof and could carry my books and my ultra thick ACER lab top (DOS). I also remembered when living in Whitehorse the local church, the Mary House used to have first of the month donation sales; my friends and I would scramble across the fence and wrestle each other for that MEC Merino jacket or that extra warm thermal MEC underpants or turtleneck. I swear I even got bruises. MEC was the best for living up north and for 7 years whether it was skiing in the wintertime, or backpacking across the Chilkoot in the summer, you never left without your Mountain Equipment Coop Paraphernalia. But the strongest memory for me is having your car battery die on the lonely highway back to the cabin in the middle of winter, with northern lights dancing above you and 23 hours of darkness surrounding you. You thanked god you had on thermal gloves and moonboots from MEC until that faithful car or truck would pass by. The list can go on, but as other reviewers have already sited, expect the best equipment for whatever season or sport, with a lifetime guarantee. And I will say this lifetime guarantee has a twist because MEC has sincerely saved mine many times.

To a newcomer from the USA, this store is comparable to REI. There is a moderate variety of good quality equipment.

Awful staff. They only care for money. Not friendly at all. Very rude. I won't go there again.

They were very patient in answering our questions and recommended how to maintain and care for the new equipment. When there was some harness fraying a couple of months later, they didn't hesitate to fix the problem. Not only did I receive excellent customer service, but I could see other customers being treated the same way. This isn't a place to go if you are looking for the cheapest equipment on the market. This is where you go if you want to speak with people who know what they are selling, will take the time to answer your questions, and will stand behind their products. They are relocating next door to a larger space and are still open while relocating. I will for sure be visiting again soon.

Yes you are busy, but people want to purchase from you and make you money dude! The least you can do is be kind and considerate. If you want to be treated poorly, go there and try to ask a question or two, you'll be shut down like the back gate. What a great online find! This small shop in Calgary has a nice selection of knives and EDC /…read moresurvival gear. Many of their products are listed for less than larger online *Canadian* retailers, depending on model. Sidenote: It's still hard to beat U.S. prices (as online shoppers up here know), but due to the somewhat recent border law changes regarding assisted / manual opening knives (I have strong opinions about that, which I will not get into here), many of the cutlery retailers in the States have ceased cross-border shipping. So for the majority of us law-abiding residents, we need to purchase these items solely through Canadian retailers. I'm all for supporting local businesses but not a fan of being forced to do so... more options are always good for consumers. Anyway, Target Knives miraculously had a discontinued multi-tool that I was looking for (one left in stock), which was quite amazing since the model has been discontinued for several years now. I seriously think I purchased the last one in Canada, at least online! My order arrived quickly and was packaged securely. I didn't receive any email confirmation / tracking info after ordering, which I attributed to the online e-commerce system for a small store. Hopefully this is something they will start doing once their online sales become more frequent. From their online selection (haven't visited the store yet), it appears Target Knives's purpose is aimed toward daily-use EDC / survival gear. Don't expect to find high-end or ultra-custom cutlery online here (Benchmade is probably the highest brand they carry online, which is definitely quite good), but for mid-range and below, Target Knives has a good spread for a small shop. You might find some hard-to-locate gems such as the multi-tool I purchased... and as mentioned, great prices on many of their products. Honestly, dependable mid-range gear is better for EDC anyway IMHO since I hate messing up super expensive gear during daily tasks. But hey, if you've got the money for it, more power to you. It looks like from other reviewers that Target Knives also carries some eclectic products in store, such as swords and fantasy collector items. I didn't see these online, but there are displays of them shown in the store photos. Pretty cool... I will definitely be stopping by during my next Calgary trip to check this place out!

My day started out by calling around to about 5 big shops to find a multi tool I have been reading…read moreabout for months now, and after getting a "no sorry I don't have that" from all 5 I called this place up. I didn't know if I would have any luck since it's a knife shop, but let me tell you this place is a Mecca for knife and out door tool people. There is tons of stock, he had three of the tool I wanted! Very eclectic little shop, and the owner is very helpful and knowledgable. Canada needs more of these home grown mom and pop shops. And literally everything I browsed while there was well below any discounted prices I saw online. Even Amazon! One word of warning, come here fully prepared to stay a good amount of time, because this place is loaded with great stuff.
