Atmosphere might be what MEC used to be in terms of its young, hip, and hungry edge. It's a smaller store, features mostly brand names, and perhaps has more limited choices in some areas. However, for me and my US-based credit card, it's all about the sales to selection ratio. On a recent Saturday, I went back and forth across the street comparing styles and pricing of hiking shoes and jackets. They have good sale /discount prices. They have some good brands colombia, north face . Many types of shoes all sorts of prices for everyone to find. Minus star for not having all seasonal clothing only current weather , which is not helpful if preparing to go to trip of different season. They also need XL/18+ sizes, very difficult to find in the racks. read more

Ironically Coast Mountain is across from Mountain Equipment Coop, and I thought well it's the place to go if you can't find what you want at MEC. Which is exactly what I did, I was looking for a nice down jacket just for regular wear, but I wanted something a little more fashionable that I could wear for a night out at minus 20. Of course the options are endless in MEC but the one style I wanted wasn't available in my size and this line was sold out at other MEC locations. So I walked across the street to Coast Mountain Sports. The service at MEC was impeccable, I was given top notch service but when I walked across the street, it was difficult to even find a salesperson. Finally, upon receiving service, the salesboy and I both realised that winter wear for ladies was quite slim pickings, and the prices here were even higher than MEC. The store just didn't have that orderly fashion that MEC flaunts and when I did have some time to browse more, CMS just wasn't able to keep my attention. Don't get me wrong, CMS has quality items to choose from too, but if I do need something in the future other than a cup of sugar, I will still loyally return to the neighbours. read more

It's no surprise that after all these years, I'd never visited Coast Mountain Sports. The reason I say it's no surprise is because as Dinah G. mentions, Coast Mountain Sports is directly across from Mountain Equipment Coop(MEC). And while Coast Mountain Sports DOES have an extensive array of goods, nothing can compete with MEC. This having been said, allow me to assure you that while MEC isn't open on weekends until 10am, Coast Mountain Sports IS open and they definitely carry a whole lotta stuff. They've got everything from fleece clothing to boots, flashlights to gloves, and food canisters to freeze-dried chicken teriyaki. I'm so not kidding! They've got a slew of meals that are freeze-dried so that if you're up in the mountains or out in the wilderness, you can still get all the right nutrients to all the right body parts. I was impressed with the service at Coast Mountain Sports - The minute we walked in we were greeted with a member of the staff who went over all of the day's specials with us. Although the store is tiny compared to MEC, it's amazing how much stuff they have managed to pack inside. It's definitely a good alternative to MEC, not as extensive or as big, but they've got the basics and then some! read more

As mentioned its right across from MEC and is a third of the size of its neighbour, but it is a really good outdoor store, unlike MEC it has mainly brand name gear (No own Branding like MEC which I find a bit of a money spinner for them and prefer brands I use and can trust). Recently changed to Atmosphere, the staff are very welcoming and helpful, they sort of with their size have a little bit of everything but I find that if you go to both stores for whatever you want you will get a great deal as they normally have some kind of deal on at Atmosphere, so small they might be but they are definitly worth a visit alongside any trip to MEC! I do like MEC and go often but to ignore Atmosphere which is just a short walk across the street you could be missing out on a better deal, not always but for the extra time I always visit both stores before making any purchases. They have IMO a better selection of Day, Back Packs than MEC but thats because Atmosphere have all brand names were as MEC Packs are for the most part their own, they also have a good selection of clothing, tents, shoes/boots, snowshoes, climbing gear and even manage to fit in kayaks and all the other usual outdoor items. Disclaimer: lol right I havent got anything against MEC own branding but for similar prices I would rather have the well known brand names that I trust and use, not to say that MEC gear is inferior just my preference. read more

I definitely recomment comparing between MEC and Atmosphere. i did when looking for winter parka's since I planned on spending a bit of money. While MEC's inventory is online, Atmosphere's isn't. But as far as the winter coat deprtment is concerned, Atmosphere won, with their selection. I spent $300 on a parka that was full down and it came with a $50 gift card for my next purchase, which was awesome! The staff were friendly and helped me pick out a parka with helpful suggestions and questions they asked based on my commute/outdorr life. I originally ended up buying something completely different from what I had planned, but am very happy with it. They have actual 'fashion jackets' too, not just bulky, big, puffy ones. Again, I found MEC didn't compare in this area.This makes all the difference since I plan to wear it for a few winters. read more

Coming here on boxing day was my first time actually making a purchase at an Atmosphere store. I've been needing some snowshoes for a while and thought that I would probably just wait until the end of the season to take advantage of an inventory clearance sale or maybe some used rental shoes. Seeing Atmosphere's Boxing Day flyer a few days prior, they seemed to have some good deals and I went to check them out. My fiancee and decided that our best bet was to head downtown thinking that this location would be easier to get into and less busy than the one in Deerfoot Meadows. We were right. There wasn't any street parking out front but a camera store behind them was closed for the day and had parking available. Once in the store we found it to be pretty manageable as it was busy but not crammed full of people. While browsing the snowshoe wall a couple of employees asked if we needed help. One employee gave us the rundown of the different types of shoes and asked us what type of trekking we would be doing, gave us some suggestions, then left us to shop. I didn't end up purchasing any of the shoes that had the 50%+ discounts advertised in the flyer but all of the snowshoes were on sale and I got something that was going to suit me properly for what I was doing, which is the most important thing. What's the point in getting a great deal if its on something that isn't the right product? I hadn't planned on buying poles, but taking a quick look around they had a set that was regular $135 for 60% off. They seemed like they would do the trick and were much nicer than the ones near the sales price so I nabbed that deal. The only thing I didn't find was a bag for the snowshoes. They only seemed to have one option. I guess a trip to MEC on another day will fix that problem. read more

I had a bad experience at Atmosphere. The short version of the story goes like this: I needed a piece of paddling equipment. They didn't have it. The staff were condescending. Now for the full version: I am a dragon boat paddler. During practice I prefer to wear an inflatable belt pack PFD instead of a life vest. I went in search for one at Atmosphere. I walk past the store every day on my way to work, and since I was new to Calgary I was unsure of where else to go (I had already tried MEC). There were two employees there, so I asked them if they had what I was looking for. They didn't know what I was talking about, then when I went on to explain, one employee cut me off to tell me that paddlers don't use that type of PFD, and that I should try a fishing store. (cue sarcasm) I'm so glad that kid was there to tell me what paddlers do and don't use! So helpful! (end sarcasm) It was such an uncomfortable experience that I won't be back. Especially with MEC right across the street. read more

If I had unlimited funds, I would probably spend an unlimited amount of money at Atmosphere. Yes, MEC is across the street, and depending on what I am looking for, I will compare between the two. However, there are specific items that I know I can only get at Atmosphere and since it's within walking distance of my house, they'll usually get my business. One of the main reasons that I like this store is the staff. They are friendly, knowledgeable and will go out of their way to ensure that you get the product that is right for you - not just the one that is most expensive. Yeah, it pays to have good products, but if you don't back that up with service, you won't earn my business. Atmosphere has done a good job. 12/30 read more

Never go there, went to buy camping equipment, showed the web site promo & advertisement and the salesperson got very aggressive ( in a bad way ) made every excuse not to give the web site price, then got very confrontational... just very bad customer service. Needless to say I never purchased the item and I will never go back - MEC customer support is much better. read more

The website is a complete failure. It advertised a sale for several types of paddle boards. But you cannot purchase them online, they must be purchased in store. Ok. But You also cannot search which stores have them in stock. So after calling 5 stores within a 2 hr drive of my city, I come to realize from employees that these boards are not actually in stock ANYWHERE in southern Ontario. Yet there is no indication on the website you cant buy them. What a disappointment and waste of time. read more

Atmosphere has great products! Right across Mointain Equitment Co-op so I visit them both. I recently purchased two very nice Arcteryx polo shirts for $100 dollars apiece. After two wears the shirts were showing flaws like colour fade and little holes showing up on one shirt. Now, Arcteryx has a lifetime warrenty (limited) on their clothes so I was not too concerned. I brought the shirts to Atmosphere and was told that it's unfortunate and that I should contact Arcteryx myself and tell it to them. Any other store in Calgary would exchage or replace immediately. Buyer beware, if you want to return/exchange a warrantied product, your on your own! Two stars for awful customer service! read more

My first visit to Atmosphere was after a failed attempt at MEC to find a winter jacket that wasn't down to my toes or cost $500. It was a Monday so there weren't tons of staff around but for some reason there were quite number of customers shopping at 11am. A lady named Kristin was helping me, and despite being swamped, she helped me with many coats of various sizing, and told me the differences between each product. She ha crazy product knowledge, and I walked away with an awesome new coat for less than $300. Just so happens that every year around this time, they have a promo for a $50 gift card, if you spend over $250. Atmosphere is linked with sport check so the gc can be used in their stores as well. Most of Atmosphere's selection is of outerwear, footwear and a sprinkling of socks, gloves and those kind of accoutrements. Would definitely recommend checking them out for your winter apparel needs. read more

I've been in to the Atmosphere location here on 10th Avenue SW on 3 occasions and have made purchases on two of those. The first purchase I made was a 3 person tent in 2010. I have used this tent for several seasons and being my first tent, I looked to the staff for direction on which was the right one for my needs. I got help from two different staff at the same time who were equally interested in helping and understanding me before suggesting any product. In the end I love my tent and it's been amazing for the past 3 years with regular use! The second purchase I made was in May 2014 during a "friends and family" sale day. I received help from a staff member named Cam - he was extremely helpful. I wanted a waterproof shell (jacket) that would keep me dry on camping trips, without becoming clammy and stick to me on the inside. There were several jackets in my price range and after asking various relevant questions about my intended use and needs, he suggested the Columbia jacket. This was actually the least expensive of the products they had available, but I'm comfortable saying after a long weekend of camping with a few rainy spells that I got exactly the right product for me. Thanks Cam and thanks to the staff at Atmosphere for taking the intimidation out of selecting from a huge range of products that vary dramatically in price and performance. I've always been impressed by the amount of product knowlege the staff seem to have! PS - All of my purchases at Atmosphere have been as the result of hearing about sales through their email blasts. Maybe I have good parkma, cause I always find a spot close by, I don't come into the city often but will make the trek from Millarville to browse this store. Today I bought my 2nd pair of Soloman trail runners (love!!) & scored a sweet deal on an icebreaker hoodie which is actually long enough for me - I'm freakish tall. My husband is English and only survived the ridiculous winter (his first in Canada) because of all the cozy layers and poofy down things from Atmosphere. Every time I'm in I find something workable and wearable, just love the place and thought I'd share it here. read more
