They have a good lesson program and it's very reasonable. You actually can skate more and it will cost you less if you sign up for lessons on Saturday and Tuesday. Went for a birthday party and really enjoyed our experience! I actually enjoyed the old school nostalgia of this skating rink. Yes, things are old, it may smell a little musty and the games are a little worn but I thought it gave it such charm! Took me back to my childhood days. The rental prices are reasonable and the employees were kind to everyone in our party. Ok so I came here with my parents and brother looking for a good time but when I walked in I immediately noticed that the whole place smelled like FEET! After I got past that, there speakers are HORRIBLE, I FELT LIKE THE MUSIC WAS 144p! Not only that but all the seats were horrendously disgusting, it's like if they get a spill nobody cares. My daughter had her 13th birthday there last weekend. Although my daughter and her friends had a good time skating. It was way overpriced.!!! When I first arrived, I had cake and presents and all this stuff I had to sit down I couldn't even say hi to my guest and they pulled me aside and told me that she has two other parties to do and she is not going to be giving the kids individual drinks of what they want to drink that I have to choose between lemonade or fruit punch and she's giving all the kids the same drink because she doesn't have time!!!! they have an entire drink menu. These are teenagers. They're not gonna drink the same thing!!! The pizza tasted like old cheese with no sauce on it and they were almost $20 apiece. The place smelled was very dirty way way way overpriced food. The owner is very rude. The cops were called on the party next to us because people were fighting and the owner was fighting with them.!! whenever you asked any of them question, they did not have an answer or they didn't get back to you!! this was a $310 party. Horrible staff, they have an attitude. Going over the intercom telling the children to not skate after lessons until the music starts as if that's going to hurt anything. Instructors are rude to the children, getting frustrated with them and telling them that "it's not that hard" when they're just beginners. Don't get your child lessons here. Look elsewhere. Other than the staff, this is a good place to skate for fun. If it's the closest place near you that is. It's got a cute retro feel, but it's in need for renovation. The floors and walls are gross. Let me start by saying that I used to LOVE coming to Skate-A-Way when I was in middle school and high school...well over 20 years ago. Amazingly, imagine my disappointment when I observed that the place has not changed a single bit (in a BAD way) in that 20+ years when I recently revisited again for a birthday party for one of my daughter's friends. So sad. While nostalgic for a few fleeting moments, that feeling was completely overtaken by sadness as my once beloved Skate-A-Way seemingly has not seen a single renovation, improvement, or even basic maintenance since I was here last (over two decades earlier). The skating floor is in horrid shape and is so scratched in some places that it is actually bumpy to skate over. The boards have started to bow and separate, creating visible gaps/holes on the main floor. Is this not a liability concern for the owner? Off the main floor, the carpet is fraying and stringing so bad that not only is it dangerous to skate over, I'm actually surprised that the strings haven't caused falls by getting wrapped around wheels. The upholstery on the seats is so badly stained that I didn't want my daughter to sit on it. Again, very sad. At least two of the speakers were blown and the whole place smelled like a boy's high school locker room. The rental skates are a separate hazard by themselves, with the wheels collecting some kind of visible black funk that prevented them from rolling smoothly/evenly. And don't get me started on the quality of service at the Snack Bar (starting with the fact that they refuse to accept any form of payment other than cash). As much as I hate giving 1 Star reviews, this place has earned it in spades...which breaks my heart for a place that I used to love. This place is a joke. No one runs this place it is just a free for all. The kids that I assume are supposed to be enforcing the rules are the ones acting like they don't have any sense. My son fell and broke his arm here on 7/7/2023. I initially wasn't upset because accidents happen. When I called the next day to talk to a manager about his experience, I was met with rudeness from the start. The manager, Michelle, would not get on the phone even after being told that I was calling about an injury. She just kept yelling in the background that it's skate at your own risk. So, I went up there to talk to her. She immediately told me to leave the property and to call her lawyer that she refused to give me the name and number of. I made a FB post on my personal page and another manager, Ashley, came on there and was completely rude and unprofessional. I am appalled by the way that we have been treated. The night of the accident, he asked to use one of the beginners training aid thing and was told that they were $15 for rental which is insane. Why wouldn't you want to protect and help the beginners so that they would continue to come back to your business? read more

Honestly, I would never go back here again. This lady named Michelle was yelling at KIDS for fast skating and to stop scaring off costumers but they were only fast skating... at SKATE-AWAY, like what do you expect lady? People are obviously going to fast skate at a skating rink. But whatever suits you girl do it I guess. Then she got down from the intercom after yelling at the kids but she said she was kicking them out for not listening then I heard that she punched or hit one of the kids and was physically trying to grab one of them. He was just trying to fight back so it looked like he was the bad guy and looked like he started it. But she said if they didn't stop she would call the cops and guess what?.. She did. Everyone there got kicked out when the cops got there it's such a ghetto skate away. (). I also heard somebody pulled a gun out on someone a few months back. And I also saw a review that said someone had to get hip surgery because he fractured his hip when he got pushed. Some lady that worked there said he deserved it for not getting up when they told him to AFTER he got pushed. So unless you want your kids, yourself, or anyone getting hurt then don't go here. Well at least not this one. Half of the staff was EXTREMELY rude as well. Food is disgusting to. As somebody with anxiety and someone who gets triggered easily this was absolutely TERRIFYING.. I can't say enough good things about this place. They've hosted three or four of my daughter's birthday parties and they do a great job every time. This year especially they went above and beyond. Marisol was a wonderful server and the manager, Ashley, was extremely helpful and professional. One of the kids in our party was injured and they made absolutely sure we had everything we needed. zero stars if i could!!!! first and foremost i am disgusted that chesterfield county elementary schools are even promoting this place as a pta school activity!!!! there are way better establishments nearby (launch trampoline, bowling places, chuckee cheese etc) the manager is extremely rude & unprofessional. every inch of this place is filthy!!! the skates disgusting!!! mold on the walls, trash on the floor. they even offered one parent some used, yes..used!!! worn before, socks!!!! her exact words were "we ran out of socks but my co workers child has these socks you can use" again...worn socks!!! that right there tells you everything you need to know. the food was absolutely disgusting a kid got sick just minutes after taking bites! they are using household appliances to fulfill food orders!!! you will see a fry daddy behind the counters. i will never return and i will make sure the pta committees are informed about the upkeep and horrible customer service we witnessed at an elementary school night. read more

Not a customer friendly establishment. Came here with my oldest child for a school event along with my younger special needs child. I was told that I had to pay admission for the younger child, even though she does not have the physical ability to skate, because she is under the age of 18. I questioned what the attendant was telling me and she curtly motioned to a long sheet of paper of their rules and said "yes, it is posted right here". Needless to say I will never set foot in this establishment again, will request that the school no longer use them for future events and will ensure all of our friends in the special needs community understand their policy towards this segment of the population. read more

I took my son today because our local skating rink is closed. Based on some of the reviews, I had low expectations. The main rink wasn't that bad, the beginners rink floor could use some work. The carpet is stained, uneven and fraying. I actually didn't feel safe skating on the carpet. But my biggest complaint is how disgusting the skate rentals are. I rented a pair of quads. I tried three pair before I just gave up on finding a good fit. The leather was so worn the plastic around the back of the heel was exposed on the inside of the skate. The leather is so flimsy it doesn't support your ankle at all. I definitely wouldn't recommend renting quads from this place. Also, the pricing was very expensive. $5 for a skate mate for 30 minutes plus a $5 deposit. $2.50 for a bottled drink. Overall we had a good time but prefer our local skating rink. read more

I was never much of a roller skater. I grew up in the country and we didn't have any paved roads or driveways so there wasn't really anywhere to roll, and the nearest rink was about 20 miles away. We did have ponds and a river nearby, so our neighborhood was full of ice skaters. My niece, Kira, loves to roller skate. She's really athletic and good at most everything she tries. She goes to skate-a-way with friends and family and blasts around the turns. read more

I decided to have my 4yo daughters birthday here & the owner was VERY rude. The racial comments she made to me & my guest were the extremely unprofessional. she called her security on 3 of my child guest that were 5,6 & 8 years old by the way & said "come get these kids because they don't have any home training". I'd never go there again & if youre BLACK don't bother. A waste of money. My room time started at 3:10 i didn't start getting my pizza until 3:35 & the room was over with at 3:50pm. She thought she was doing me a favor by letting us stay until 4 when the children barely had a chance to eat. She even called the police because we took too long to leave & she told us at 4:06 that we were being inconsiderate. her exact words were "i knew we were going to have trouble with those folks". On a Saturday night, me and a group of friends decided to go there and skate, when we arrived the place and it did look sketchy on the outside but surly when you walk in you would be surprised. So this was April 14, 2023 me and my friends decided to go to skate a Way halfway into our visit the lady name Michelle gets on the mic and screams at the kids to be careful and stop scaring off customers and to stop fast skating. I was like girl it's skate a Way of course kids are going to fast skate as somebody who does have PTSD that was really triggering for me so so the next time you yell at your customers put a trigger warning so like a few minutes goes by she gets on the mic and she was like screaming louder for people to stop fast skating or she'll call the cops so like 30 minutes goes by and it's not even 9 o'clock yet and she gets on the mic again and screams at these kids to like get out and stuff. She was basically kicking them out for like no reason and then they got into a fistfight. the lady and some kid a grown adult, got into a fight with a kid, so everybody's freaking out. And was being really nosy because they wanted to see what happen so the cops came and we got kicked out if you wanna bring your child here do not because it is so bad personally, I've gotten yelled by Michelle because I said a bad word. What do you expect of getting a bunch of teenagers together they're obviously gonna cuss and then one time rumor has it that somebody pulled a gun on somebody and the cops came, so do not go to this ghetto place unless you're prepared for the cops to come. This place is so bad please just don't bring your kids or teenagers here because I know they smoke in the girls bathroom stalls and the food is nasty and people have injuries from this place and there is a review on Google that says some somebody had to get hip surgery so if you want your kids to be hurt, slammed into the floor and have fractures and stuff, DO NOT go here. read more

I will never attend this location again. I urge any parent that is considering to plan a party here to rethink using this facility. Every year I chose a fun location for my son we have done sky zone, jumpology, children's museum, swaders, etc. this year he wanted to skate so I chose this location which I completely regret. I paid my deposit months in advance ans ordered 5 pizzas for the party day. I arrived early as they suggested to check in and let them know my food order. Our party time for the party room and food was at that point another hour and 15 minutes. An hour and 15 minutes later it was time for the party room. We waited 15 minutes for food and finally went to the hostess to ask where the food is. She said she didnt know i ordered pizza. She went to talk to ab employee and none of the 5 pizzas were made. She apologized and said it would be a while before all 5 are done and she apologized since she had no idea I had a food order. Again, this was ordered in advance and the checking employee wrote it down on my party sheet. Clearly, being a parent with a room full of hot tired kids and adults hungry and hot from skating for an hour and 15 minutes i wasn't happy i asked to speak to the manager. Michelle was the manager i have never encountered such an unprofessional and rude manager in my life. She was argumentative and as I was explaining my issue she blew it off saying the pizzas can still be made you just have to wait a bit. Spending a few hundred dollars and this being the response i get for their mistake baffled me. I told her I wasn't pleased with her response she was fed up and said I'll give you a discount, pizzas are on us. I told her I just want 3 pizzas instead of 5 because at this point we all just need to eat as this was planned as our lunch and its 225pm at this point. Fast forward to the end of the party. I get my bill with no discount. I go to the register ask to speak to Michelle she comes over I tell her I'm confused as she said I would get a discount due to the their mistake she said ma'am I'm not gonna give you a discount just pay your bill if your unhappy with your experience just don't come back. I said I'm confused as to why you told me earlier I wouldn't be charged for pizzas but now I am. She said I'm gonna call the police because your refusing to pay your bill. I ask when I said I wouldn't pay it. I am trying to understand what changed. She said I don't have time for this pay your bill or I will call the cops walked into the office slammed the door. Another employee was standing right there during this whole conversation. Two seconds later she walks out and tells the employee if I don't pay it tell her and she will call the police immediately. I asked the employee who runs this location. The manager jumps out of her office again and says just pay your bill. I said I will pay my bill but I would like to get the contact information for the owner because being treated like this for a mistake you all made and being disrespected and threatened when I did nothing wrong is inexcusable and its important the owner is aware. She said I will not give you the number until you pay the bill and goes back in the office and slams the door. The employee that was standing there brought me the receipt and asked for my method of payment I told her credit card handed it to her and asked if I could please get the owners contact information. She ran the card went in the office and gave me a number written on a ripped piece of paper. There's so much to love and hate about this place. It is in desperate need of updating as it is not only outdated its dingy. It's beyond vintage folks, time to cut loose a little on the purse strings and start some improvements. There's so much untapped potential going to waste. The music is awful for family afternoons; it can be vulgar and too loud--consider your audience. Monday's are a huge improvement but hey, not everyone can skate on Monday nights. I brought my kids here about 10 years ago and and moved when they just renovated. Yes, the carpet is fraying- but my teens just wanted to hang out and skate. Nice sound and lighting system. Large, smooth skating area. Rental skates were well-used but smooth and good condition. No trouble with the staff- not super-friendly but not disrespectful. Everyone seemed to have a good time. There was a staff member helping kids who have fallen and to assist in games. Definitely much nicer than the run-down skating rink near us which seem suck in the 70's (think Brady Bunch) with worn-out skates, painted but now peeling rink, and poor sound system. As with other reviewers, there isn't much options in the area with skating rinks and it's all what you're used to. read more

We just started coming here, bringing the kids for lessons just for something for them to learn to do together and bond since we're so busy during the week. I will not be coming back after the lessons are over. My goddaughter who is the youngest of the group learned absolutely nothing in a class with 10 other kids that were much older than her. Her teacher was super nice and patient but that's about it. They always start late but finish on time so the kids don't get the full 30 minutes of lessons. The skates are a mess, old and dirty. We got a pair that had gum residue on the bottom and the floors are dirty. There's no changing table in the bathroom to accommodate people with babies. Then we had an issue with a woman who I could assume was the manager. My goddaughter who is only 3, has feeding and speech issues and can only eat certain foods, so I brought her food in (in a bag) and I made sure to check about signs about outside food and there were none. While I was walking with her, the "manager" approached my mother and told her that we couldn't have outside food in the building so she put it in my bag and zipped it up until I came back. Next thing I hear, was an announcement about food and drinks needing to be thrown out or put in the car. Here we have a toddler with feeding and speech issues and you're telling me to throw out her food. It's 40° outside so by the time I get to feed her, the food is no longer warm for her to eat it because I was made to put her food outside. Then I was approached twice for having a Wendy's cup on the table, nevermind the mom with her kids on the other side of the rink eating Chic fil A....Seriously?! The next announcement was for people who were not buying food to move from the tables so others could sit. It's a Saturday afternoon and the place is completely crowded. We had 1 table and for the past 3 weeks, always had 1 table for 9 of us and never had a problem until today. We were sitting there, not holding seats like other people were, but we were actually sitting there. This woman was actually threatening to shut down the concession stand because people were sitting at tables. I took it personally because she kept making the announcement until we finally got up and left. There were plenty of other tables open for people to sit but it just felt like we were being targeted. I'm going to finish this out because it's paid for by grandma for her grandchildren but never again will I come back to this place. I'll find a better skating rink and one closer to home. read more

I wish I could give zero stars. My teenage son visited this rink a few weeks ago and collided with another skater. He fell and could not move off of the floor. The lady working there insisted that he move off the floor without caring what was wrong with him and when he couldn't they called me to pick him up. When he was trying to explain, she got on the phone and said he was hurt but she didn't think it was that serious and she would bring him out to me. Luckily I was already there. The rolled him out in a chair where she rushed the other guys helping him to the car to get back in there as if she did not want them to assist. Later my son told me that she told him "that's what you get" when she came over after he fell as she thought he smacked his teeth at her earlier when paying for entry. A GROWN WOMAN TOLD A TEENAGER THAT'S WHAT YOU GET FOR FALLING! WOW! Well her "it's not that serious" turned into my son needing HIP SURGERY. His hip was fractured from the fall that she thought he deserved due to him smacking his teeth at her because of her line of questioning to him about having his own skates. She badgered him as if she didn't believe he OWNED his own skates and even made him show her the skates in the bag which in turn he smacked his teeth. My kid does NOT need to steal a skate rental so it was very unnecessary. I am glad she understands the concept of "that's what you get" aka KARMA because it will come back to you! read more
