Ashland Skateland feels like it's straight out of the 80s in the best way. Old school rink, classic vibe, and it's really affordable. The music was good, and skating ended up being a way better workout than I expected. Only caveat. I definitely felt a little out of place as an adult since it was mostly kids. Oh take me back to the age of 12-13. I miss the days of having late night lock-ins, skating all night with my friends. It's been 30 years for me since then and I had my 15 year old braid my hair like a toddler and skate for 2.5 hours. Do you remember your shins, backside and legs being on ? I don't! These little kids learning how to skate and falling over and over and over, I couldn't watch! Three stars only because they wait until the end of the night to do the fun skates (couples/adult) didn't even play the limbo song for the limbo. They let the kids still stay on the floor for all skates. The skates themselves were so dirty, mine were like the kind a few hundred kids have there food and drink all attached to. They really need to work on the checking in part, line out the door, it really shouldn't take that long! No competitors really, so I'd skating is your thing go! To all the people saying that it really smells in there, what do you expect? It's a skating rink. It's not going to smell like a fresh pile of clean clothes. People are taking their feet and transferring them to roller skates. Ofc it's going it's going to stink. That's beside the fact that at the end of your skating session, your putting your sweaty, worn out feet back into your original shoes. So it's not going to smell nice, but even then you'll get used to the smell. Besides that, the skating place is amazing! It's a little dirty but isn't every skating rink? After trying the other two local rinks rentals as well, the ones at Ashland were absolutely great! The place was PACKED, had to wait in line outside, and even had to sit on the floor to get my skates on... and still had the best experience ever! We visit this location weekly and always enjoy it. I recognize that it is a dated place with limited food and drink options but we still love it. I am giving it the 4 stars just to help people understand that it is not new and shiny and up-to-date. This is by no means a reflection on the establishment or how much fun you will have here. It's a family friendly environment if you go on the right day and time and it's very affordable. Everybody there is friendly the only downside is that a lot of the games don't work and I'm not sure there's anything anybody can do about it. We've enjoyed birthday parties here, Christian, skate night, school, fundraisers, and Monday adult skate night. It's wonderful exercise, and just a great time to hang out for the evening without breaking the bank and without alcohol. read more

My daughter attended a birthday party here this past weekend and it wasn't the best experience. My daughter was happy learning to skate with her friends but that's about it. For starters, as others have stated, we had to wait in line outside even though the party had already started and been paid for. Not the end of the world but kind of annoying. While in line we read the rules, which I liked because I felt that ment it would be a good environment, but after we entered we saw numerous incidents where nothing was done when the rules were broken. I actually got a chuckle out of the "no swearing" rule because as I was putting on my daughters skates I heard cuss words coming from the music they were playing. The customer service from the woman at the front was good in my case. She was friendly, even after dealing with the rude kid in front of me in line. When I went to rent a pair of skates to help my daughter (who was having trouble learning at first) she told me I could go on the floor without skates to help her if I'd prefer. The teens at the rental area (we will call girl#1 and girl#2) were another story and was what upset me the most about our visit. They were incredibly rude, girl#2 in particular, but both needed more education to do their job. First I got my daughters skates and after putting one on we realized we were given 2 left feet. I tried to take one back to exchange it for a right and was told by girl#1 I needed to return them both as they were paired. Ok I didn't realize that would be considered a pair, I assumed I would just be given a right, but I said fine and went back to get the other skate off my daughter. When I brought the second left back girl#2 asked me where the rights were. I tried explaining it to her but she just wasn't getting it. She couldn't get past her thought that they couldn't have given me two lefts and that I must have mixed them up. Finally girl#1 noticed I was there a came back over to give me the correct pair. I'm was hoping she would be able to explain it to girl#2. After seeing my daughter have so much trouble learning to skate my husband wanted to go out to help her but he said the skates were disgusting and he didn't want to rent them. He instead was ready to buy a pair but they told him they didn't have any for sale even though they were on the wall for sale. He did end up renting a pair of roller blades and tried to teach our daughter. My daugher was still having trouble so that was when I had my encounter with the woman at the front and even though she said I didn't need to, I rented a pair. I then took my ticket to girl#1 at the skate rental and asked for an 8.5. I was told they don't do half sizes so I requested an 8 because I'd rather them be tight than loose. I tried them on and they were huge. The back if the skate was labeled 8/11 so I'm guessing they must be mens sized so I went back to get a smaller pair. I asked if the sizing was different, if they were mens sized or something because that would mean I would need a 6 or 7. Girl#2 looked at me and said there was nothing different with the sizes and that "there must be something wrong with my feet". I understood the girl was trying to get a dig in on me after the earlier incident but I just laughed because it didn't even make sense. Finally girl#1 gave me a seven and they were good enough. Getting out on the floor I realized how disgusting the shelf in the wall was as it left a grimy feeling on my hand. The floor itself was small and in bad shape. The nics and chunks missing were everywhere. We did get a good work out (though I wish they would have switched directions for a bit to even out the muscle work) and our daughter liked skating once she got the hang of it. Taking all into consideration (including how far away other rinks are) we might give it another chance after we buy our own skates but more than likely we will travel to find another place to skate. read more

So, as I read through all the reviews, they're a bit overboard with the negativity. This is just a smaller, nice normal, not racist skateland.... I bring my kids here, it's never been crazy packed, it's not disgusting. Sure it's older and needs renovations but it's not falling apart, outdated at best. Staff is nice, the teens that work there are sometimes withdrawn, they're young. Most people that work there are very nice and helpful. Yes, you have to pay for bottled water, why wouldn't you? Prices are not bad at all, my opinion is that it's very affordable, my kids enjoy this place very much and we will be back! Great music, never too hot to make you sweat while you're skating. Could've just been because it was Monday. I wonder if people ever play the video games or eat at the cafe. The skates I was given were VERY stiff. It's got everything you'd expect: a refreshments counter, selection of skate-related products for sale, gum-ball machines with little trinkets, and a few arcade games including my fave -ski ball. Tickets can be exchanged for prizes. There are age segregated skate & sock races at the close of each night, fun for even the youngest skaters. It's a very welcoming atmosphere for families with kids, the staff seems genuinely excited to be there. They have vending machines, a small but adequate concession stand, and a few arcades. We went on a Thursday night, Christian music night, which was perfect especially if you have young children. All the staff were friendly and professional. Mid-evening they got a limbo pole out for the kids, and at the end of the night they had age grouped races. Afterwards they had sock races for kids who were not as confident on skates. A HUGE plus for our family, is that they allow strollers in the rink!!! We had a great experience here on a Sunday afternoon! The music was fun and spanned many decades (60s-10s). The rental skates were really nice (they must have updated recently). The place was clean. They have a little pizza bar, but we didn't get anything. The staff were all very nice! In fact, one of my skates (owned, not a rental), was having a problem with the wheel and the guy fixed it for me, no charge. We will definitely be back when we are in the area! When we went to our car to smoke. After being yelled at not to throw buds down ,as if we were minors. I understand a business has policies but you could let us know when we with to the door. I've been coming here for a while only because it's the closest skating rink to me. The only good thing I have to say is that they play really good family friendly music. Other than that it's all bad First, the entire place needs to be renovated. The carpet is nasty and the skate floor needs to be replaced or at least polished down to remove nicks in it. Second, they should be required to say on their website when daycares are coming in. It is absolutely ridiculous to have three different daycares come in on the same day all with small children who don't know how to skate. It's impossible for anyone to skate because they are falling down, laying down, going the wrong way and its MASSES of children doing this. I feel like I should be refunded for having to try to skate around masses of children. The prices are outrageous not to mention you have to PAY for water. Any place that charges for cold water should be shut down. If you don't have your own skates it's $8 and that's from 1pm til 3:45pm not even all day. And if you leave you can't come back in. The teenagers that work there all have bad attitudes and act like they hate life. And it's been on several occasions not just one day. Haven't been skating in years, but came for a birthday party. The women who helped and sold us tickets as we walked in was great. The young ladies who do skate rentals did not greet us or ask how could they help - just stared at us until I finally spoke. I thought it was just me, but after talking with my girlfriend who joined us later in the evening said she dealt with the same thing. I won't recommend this place after hosting my child's 8th birthday here. It was overpriced for a table with no food, just water and popcorn. Instead of having a party planner, or a hostess, they make your party guests wait in a line wrapped around the building, even though they are 'pre-paid guests'. Some of the party guests left and were not able to attend the party because of the 'wait in line' policy, even if you're 'paid for in advance'. The manager is rude, and unaccomadating. She was not helpful at all, and charged families that were guests of my Childs party and paid for by me. I had to get their money refunded after the party, because that is called 'scamming'. After all of that, they annouced my child's age incorrectly, saying she was turning 7, instead of 8, but by this time I was sure it was out of spite and frustration of being called on their poor business practices. read more

I took a group of students (grades 5-8) to the rink today as a reward activity, and it was a blast. We rented the rink for a couple of hours, and it was a perfect treat for the kids. The staff were so friendly and fantastic with the "tweens" and teens. The kids were able to play arcade games, skate, and snack. The snack bar was the typical fare, and they also have vending machines. They offer regular roller skates and inline skates (roller blades) to rent. They have air hockey, pool, foosball, claw machines, and video games so our non-skaters had fun too. The music selection was perfect for our group, and the DJ took requests. I've been several times with my kids and usually I go during days the kids do not have school. Unfortunately I went last Wednesday during a rainy spring break day. The rink was so over crowded with pre-schools, martial arts programs, and other child care places that my kids got knocked down and ran into multiple times in the 20 minutes we attempted to skate. There was only one staff person on the floor and he could not keep up with all the ciaos. We left, it was not worth the over stimulation melt down that my son was about to have. I feel like they should have a limit on how many skaters are allowed on the floor at once so people can skate safely. read more

I can't say much for the building itself, it is in major need of a makeover - but I have noticed in the last few months that small things are being redone. Sometimes it can get really crowded and be difficult to skate, but that usually only happens on Friday afternoons or weekends, so we make sure to go on weekday afternoons. The skate rental and admission fee are pretty reasonable, the last time we went it was only $4 per person (skate rental included). There's also a snack bar, arcade games, bathrooms and tables to sit at. I signed up for some of the classes they offer, and they're really good. I've been bringing my family to Ashland Skateland almost every week for ten years. We love the staff, and we've made friends with a lot of the other frequent skaters. Prices are better than other area rinks--even at the snack bar. (The snack bar is cash-only so they don't have to add credit card fees into the prices.) Music is diverse, and they try to accommodate all music requests. I took lessons for a couple of years as a 30-something adult, and they were wonderful. The people working were young, but still friendly and willing to help when needed. The music was clean during our children's event. I really wish I didn't even have to give any stars but it made me click at least 1 star. This was my first visit to this place, I was there for my grandsons birthday party. The woman at the window/entrance was very rude. After the encounter at the window we went in and saw that the space for the party was so small, there was not even enough space for all of the kids and their parent. They placed another party in the same small corner which made it even more crammed. The price per child was MORE per child had we just all walked in and paid, and the pizza they sold was an additional charge and it was like an old fashioned horrible frozen pizza, it was disgusting and they were $10 or more a piece. Ridiculous. The worker that brought the pizza and water to the table was rude. This was the worst party my grandson has ever had.. we will not be back. Beware if you drop off your kids thinking they will have responsible adults watching over them and leading by example. Gab is particular. Spent way too much money for a party only to have a middle age women skate over and yell at me because I asked 2 girls to move seats. When you have a party, you have a reserved space and an assigned employee as your host. The host told 2 young ladies not to sit on the bench closest to our tables before the party even started as it was reserved. I didn't mind at first because there was plenty room and they were going to skate anyway. About an hour later the 2 girls started causing issues and being rude to my party guests, so I asked them to move. They went to complain to Gab who was basically the person on the rink making sure people act right. Well, let's get into how foolish this woman is. Gab and the 2 girls rolled over and Gab immediately started yelling at me. Litteraly yelling at me. Clearly she was amped up so I attempted to tell her what happened and she can talk to our host because the girls were already asked to leave earlier. Attempting to point out how they ignored the host. This should have been a simple, respectful adult conversation over a misunderstanding as it turns out the host was mistaken and the space the 2 girls were at, was not part of our area. Gab turned it into a shit show. I asked her why she was yelling at me. She yelled the girls were there 1st, so they will sit there then rolled away. I had my guests scoot down. The 2 girls came back over very proud of themselves because their friend Gab "showed me". 1 of the 2 girls then started a fight with one of my guests and I had to literally put myself between them before they started to get physical. Keep in mind, these kids are between 13-16 so drama is their thing. Gab only added fuel to the teenage fire. Something and someone you don't want your kids around. After everyone calmed down, I went to talk to the person in charge for the night, Anthony. As I was telling him the whole story and emphasized how a simple misunderstanding was blown out of proportion all because of Gab. She had the embarrassing audacity to come stand next to him and smirk at me. As I was talking to Anthony I pointed out how ridiculous she is as she is literally smirking at me. She then said I "cussed 2 girls out up and down". Ok. Now I understand why she was acting like a child. Still not acceptable but at least it made a little more sense. I looked at her and asked her if she was there. She looked down. I asked again if she was there. She knew she wasn't and prob realized at that moment she was duped by 2 kids and the smirk left for 2seconds. At this point I looked back to Anthony and told him her behavior is unacceptable and she is literally standing there smirking at me. He asked her to leave. I Explained her behavior is not only inappropriate but unacceptable for an employee. What kind of grown women acts like that? It was clear the 2 girls are regulars as they were there before the official open time and by the way they were skating with Gab throughout the night. Roller rink itself is your typical rink. Flashback to the 80's. Could really use a good cleaning but fun for the kids. Beware if you are under the impression this is a wholesome place to allow your children to go without supervision. They will only let you down. 2 of the workers told me Gab always acts this way so it was not just an off night. That means the owners are aware of how she acts. She will stir up the drama most parents try to keep at bay. I'm embarrassed for her because she clearly lacks the self awareness to be embarrassed for herself. read more
