I stayed there for a weekend retreat. I needed to disconnect from my busy life and meditate. I chose this establishment because it's located near me, it's affordable and it offers two daily meals. About two weeks before booking the retreat, I called up the ashram because I had a couple of questions for them. The person on the phone was very patient with me and went above and beyond with her explanations. Booking the retreat through their website is very user-friendly. Make sure you read about the rules of the place before completing your booking. I had read a few reviews about the Ashram prior booking, most reviews were raving but a couple of them made me a bit skeptical. Nonetheless, I booked my stay and did not regret it. I came during the winter after the area had had a snow storm. The grounds were covered with snow and ice, there was a path to walk from building to building but you had to be very careful as most of the campus is on a hill. The ashram follows a daily schedule and all are encouraged to participate in most events. The wake up bell is not too loud and it's easy to sleep through; so if you can, have an alarm set up. The yoga classes were intermediate level, during my stay we spent 20/30 minutes on breathing exercise, the rest was mostly working on our asanas. The poses varied from sun salutation to the crow pose and head stands. On Saturday and Sunday, they offered beginner and intermediate classes at the same time in different rooms. There are silent meditation sessions in the morning and evening and they are followed by chants and a reading/explanation from one of the books that the Ashram's founder wrote. Most prayers and chants are done in Sanskrit; during the mediation session, there are books of chants using 'English' alphabet to help the audience participate. The food was vegan and surprisingly delicious. Each meal begins with a prayer initiated by the volunteer staff. During my stay, the volunteers were nice and helpful but mostly kept to themselves. However, they were available if needed. The sauna was available and there were nature walks on Saturday and Sunday depending on interest from the visitors. I stayed in a shared room, I only had one roommate during my stay. She was a nice young lady, I was lucky that she wasn't a snorer because the shared rooms are very 'cozy'. You could hear people walking in the hallway, but usually people were mindful and did their best to be quiet. If you stay in a shared room, you will have use of the shared bathroom. The bathrooms are hostels-style, with several stalls for the W.C. and a few showers. Everything was very clean and comfortable. Bring your toiletries because the shared bathroom does not even have hand soap. Make sure that you use the bathroom according to your gender. They offer Yoga certification classes. You can stay at the ashram for a weekend or longer. They also have daily rate if you just want to partake in the activities and will not stay overnight. They have yoga mats, blocks and other things that you might need during your yoga classes. They also require for people to remove their shoes upon entering all buildings, so bring easy slip-on shoes and if possible indoors slippers. Overall, I enjoyed my stay. At first I was taken aback by all the singing and chanting, but I catch myself humming to these chants now.

Ask the Community - Sivananda Ashram Yoga Ranch

How quiet is the place if you spend the night? Are the walls thin? Can you hear people walking in the hallway? Should I bring ear plugs?

Earplugs always a good idea to pack, imho.

Thank you very much to all of the teachers and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to give us a space for relaxation and training. The teachers at DDRC are monastics from Asia or trained lay practitioners who are experienced in using English to instruct western students. The design of their retreats are comfortable and forgiving while still providing adequate intensity to challenge and inspire growth. (Note for those familiar with meditation: the Chan school from which DDRC issues relentlessly focuses on meditative methods and the usage of the mind, and less on formal strictures and conventions. If you are familiar with retreats in the Zen style, you will probably adjust to the Chan approach quite quickly.) The facilities, especially the meditation hall, are beautiful and modern. The retreat center is located in the tranquil embrace of nature where one normally hears nothing but birdsong and the sound of flowing water, though it is still easily accessible by car. Highly recommended for both those new to meditation and advanced practitioners looking to go deeper.

Just returned from my second retreat last weekend and now I definitely need to write a review!…read more Let's start with the food (because I arrived starved). Dinner the first night was soup, salad and bread- very light and all vegan. The meals go from completely bland to amazing Indian food that tastes so good, you'd think you ordered out. But yes, I went to bed hungry the first night-- because I arrived on an empty stomach. Lesson learned! But that night, I slept on a full sized bed in a room with two people. Peace Village provides extra blankets, bath towels and soaps upon request. It's like a hotel somehow, but donation-based! They really are looking out for your comfort and safety! The schedule is strict, almost like a monastery. In fact, they invite you to think of the place as an ashram. I spent most of my retreats taking lecture notes in a room called "The Inspiration Hall." The lecturers are content heavy and that can be a bit tedious to listen to-- But you're there to learn so much in such a short period of time! My only suggestion would be to loosen up the hourly schedule, so that there is more time for freedom- exploring, meditative walks in the trails/gardens/ponds, and journaling! There was one speaker named "Rena" from the "April 2019 Inner Power, Inner Peace" retreat who was so captivating when she spoke, I hung onto every word she verbatim but forgot to take notes! It's a bit tough for me to share a room with strangers but I love everything that Peace Village stands for; Google "Brahma Kumaris." If you don't have the means to make financial contributions, there is no pressure. I opted to buy books and CDs galore in the bookstore to show my appreciation. You can also help clean and set up meeting rooms and meal spaces. Most importantly, check the weather before you arrive because it's colder in the mountains- less oxygen and all. It was a sunny day in Manhattan when I left to Peace Village. But when I arrived, the retreat center looked like the set of a Stephen King thriller. See pictures

While most people around seemed to think this man was charming (and the Peace Village staff kept emphasizing what an honor his visit was), I got a bad vibe from him right away. Something about him seemed off. For example, he made sexist jokes yet came off as too people-pleasing at the same time. ("If you're a man, you know the wife is the boss. You don't wanna get on their bad side, amirite? Ha-ha.") I didn't like him. I tried to avoid him, but when were separated out for small group activities, he groped me twice. Once on the buttocks, once on the thigh. There were witnesses who saw this. We were surrounded by other attendees but separated from the other Peace Village leaders. He thought he chose his perfect opportunity. I walked out of the room immediately, very shaken, and told one of the female staff members what happened. She seemed to believe me, and hugged me because I was so upset. But later that day, she said she talked to this man, and he denied having touched me at all. He said I "must have misunderstood." Furthermore, she said, there are very strict rules for Brahma Kumaris about men and women interacting; so it was "impossible" that he would have even stepped too close to me, let alone touched me. If there was any doubt in my mind, it was gone at this point. He literally assaulted me twice, and I had other people who corroborated this. And then he lied about touching me. I came to Peace Village looking for an opportunity for self-improvement. Instead, I got unwanted sexual touching and an organization that closed ranks to protect its powerful. Can you imagine how scary it is to be trapped in a place with no cell service and not even a bus out for two days? I strongly recommend you avoid Peace Village. And more broadly, be suspicious of organizations that segregate roles by gender and require celibacy of their leaders--unfortunately, it seems to be a situation and hierarchy ripe for exploitation.

I went full Yogi this weekend on a 2 day retreat at the Himalayan Institute and it was ohmazing…read more The institute hosts lots of yoga and meditation retreats of different lengths and price points which you can sign up for on their website. The one I chose was $250 for Friday evening to Sunday afternoon. There are several types of accomodations you can choose from, ranging from single beds in a shared bathroom to a lovely 2 bedroom 2 level cottage with a pullout couch and kitchenette and lots of teas. We stayed at a cottage and really liked it. We saw some giant cockroaches by the dorm rooms, so don't come expecting the Four Seasons here. The wifi is spotty in the rooms and basically everywhere except the cafe. Meals are served for only limited times during the day (about an hour and a half) - buffet style and you put your used plates/ bowl/ cutlery into large bins after. For lunch and dinner there are usually a few soups, a main dish (for example baba ganoush and pita, quinoa salad), some rice or grains, a salad bar, some fruit, and an assortment of breads (including a gluten free bread) and everything is vegetarian. For breakfast there was oatmeal and some other grains, yogurt, fruit, a delicious tofu scramble, hard boiled eggs, and a smoothie. The food is surprisingly good and filling but I don't know that I could eat it for more than a few days. Meals are $30 a day which you reserve when you book your accommodation. There is also a black tea and decaf tea always available so bring a travel mug! There is a beautiful new shrine open almost 24 hours for quiet meditation. There is also a sanctuary in the shrine which is open for only an hour before breakfast and dinner. There are small blankets you can grab to sit on and chairs around the altar. If you're feeling like a warrior and want to practice tree pose on a tree, you can take one of the 5 hiking trails around the area. Red is very well marked, blue is well marked until it's not and then you just turn right, walk through 2 holes in fences and you're at a beautiful waterfall! Green is well marked for half of it (around a cute pond) and then you might get lost in the woods (or maybe that's just me). There were a few other trails we didn't get to check out but the reception area has a map with the routes and estimated times. There are daily Hatha yoga classes at the institute that you can attend, a cute cafe, and a great gift shop with awesome clothes, books, jewelery, everything a yogi could ever want! There's also a chocolate factory with daily tours (and samples!) We loved the lemon ginger chocolate. Right next to the chocolate factory is a place called Sound of Music Hill which has beautiful views. You can also book massages (1hr for $80) which is a really great price and very relaxing. There is a small playground for kids too. If you are looking to deepen your yoga practice and get away for a weekend and enjoy nature, unplug, and stay in one place all weekend where you don't have to make any decisions, I can't recommend this place enough.

Sometimes you must get away from the chaos to hear the sound of your soul…read more This monastery is in the tradition of the teachings of the famous Vietnamese Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh. I heard Thay speak almost ten years ago when I was in college on "mindful eating," and his teachings reverberated loudly with my beliefs. Life got busy and only recently have I found my way back to his teachings. I came here for a young adult Spring retreat and it has been one of the best experiences as of late. Despite having to wake up at 5:30 every morning for sitting meditation, I felt extremely rejuvenated and centered after spending a whole week here. If you spend time here (as in overnight), be prepared to eat vegan meals (which are very yummy and most of the dishes have an Vietnamese/Asian twist) and to have modest dorm-style accommodations. We were able to enjoy morning sitting meditations, dharma talks and discouses (Buddha's teachings), walking meditation, dharma sharing and deep relaxation. One of the things I enjoyed most about this retreat was "mindful eating." All meals are eaten in silence and you get to really think about food. Because I wasn't talking or distracted, I could truly taste my food and concentrate on it. I found myself eating less, but feeling more satisfied. Even though I didn't exercise as much at the monastery, I managed to shed a few pounds and I attribute it to the "mindful eating." You may think this is all hoky poky, but the New York Times recently did an article on "mindful eating," so there is some clout to what I am saying here. The monastery is also open on Thursdays and Sundays for "A Day of Mindfulness." So if the city and life is getting to you, this is a perfect getaway to get in touch with yourself and to feel more calm and relaxed. I leave you with this beautiful quote by Thay and hope you get to experience Blue Cliff for yourself!
