Trius is a hands-on teacher, and gives you the right amount of guidance without being patronizing, which I think is very important. His passion is palpable in his instructions, and his discussions and examples from the masters have been very informative to a beginner like me. At times, when I've given up on a sketch that I've been working on, he has motivated me to keep at it. He is immensely patient, has a keen eye for problem areas and gives constant feedback, which was highly encouraging for me throughout the classes. His knowledge is immense, and he focusses on the fundamentals and gives you a solid foundation to build on, which I think is the most important reason I'd recommend him over other instructors. Besides being a great teacher, he is a wonderful artist and his works are an inspiration in itself. And as another review mentioned, he is a very very interesting person to talk to :)

Trius is classically trained but not hidebound, and he is willing to help you work on the areas you choose. I always learned from his assignments, and he had lots of useful book recommendations, as well. He is very patient, and can teach at all levels, from very young children to experienced adults. I had already had years of college-level art classes before I started working with him, but he had a lot to contribute. I always felt his plans for our lessons were personalized to me. He was very inspiring, and encouraged me to work. I would definitely recommend him as a drawing teacher. In addition, he's just a very interesting person to talk to!

It's hard to write a negative review of an art center because I really value any place that helps…read morepeople access their creativity. But I have had such a comically bad experience with this place that I feel I should warn others. In January I found a Spring Session class I wanted to register for that was set to begin 3/15. It was in their catalog as a "New Class". However, when I went to their registration portal the class was not listed. The first time I called them, the receptionist said he didn't have access to the registration system and to call back later. The second time I called, they told me that they had added the class and I could register online--but I soon discovered it still wasn't listed. The third time I called they said they added the class but that I wouldn't be able to register until March 10th (which is when registration opens for LATE spring session, whereas this class was set to begin on March 15th, the early spring session). Huh? Registration is open for only five days before the class begins? I asked them to check again, and they called be back later that day and said the early spring session had been added. ...Nope, it definitely was still not in the system. Exasperated by their incompetence, I finally tracked down an email address for the instructor and emailed her directly. I didn't hear back, but soon after that the class showed up and I could finally register. So I did, and made an online payment. Two weeks later, I received an email with a receipt for a refund, with no explanation I assumed this meant the class had been cancelled, but no one called or emailed me to tell me that, and the refund never posted to my bank account. I had also never received any information about the class (materials list, curriculum, etc.) so I still currently have no idea what's happening. When I try to call them, their extension is "unavailable", as is the "operator" AND the "backup operator" that the system auto-routed me to. I really want this place to improve because they're one of the few organizations offering adult art classes in Oakland. But as is, it seems to be a bit of a mess.

Well after searching online I also came across The Headdress Workshop which is a subsidiary of Mannequin Madness which was a big score...take a fun class while perusing for used mannequin heads...Class supplies you with all the materials you'll need to create a unique piece: flowers, butterflies, beads, gems, greenery, feathers, etc...the instructor, Kiana was super helpful, energetic, help guide/inspire you while making it a fun experience! Her assistant Susie was equally wonderful with offering help searching for materials or gluing. This 2.5 hour class will fly by and you'll end up leaving with a wearable piece of art. Great for team building, special event or to unleash your inner Project Runway design skilz...SO FABULOUS! Highly recommend this fun workshop...and photo studio available to show off your work and be silly. I signed up for a workshop in late September, but I couldn't make that date so I emailed the workshop and Judi was so accommodating about switching my date. I arrived on time to the workshop, and although we were expecting 2 more people in the class, it ended up being just me!! Judi and Kiara were so wonderful throughout the whole class. They even offered me tea!! Mint with lemon and agave......I felt just so at home. There is a workshop table on the side of the shop, and mannequins EVERYWHERE as they resell mannequins too. I was going for a Mother Nature theme for Halloween. I was looking into pure greenery, not much flowers. I showed Kiara my inspiration, and she knew where to take it from there. They have SHELVES and SHELVES worth of material, as well as example mannequin heads on a shelf above. I seriously could not believe the final outcome. I was so impressed with myself that I made something so beautiful and on-brand for my costume... I had the most fun at this workshop............. or was it a private class? We had visitors from out of town and wanted to do something fun and unique. Ada was very responsive…read moreover email and we set up a time for our classes. She has a really warm and welcoming home studio with a lot of natural light and art supplies. It's on harbor bay island in a very quiet community with lots of parking. At first class the 4 of us did watercolors. Ada taught us how to mix colors and different techniques. Her watercolors were high quality and gave us all our own supplies. She had photos of feathers ready for us and taught us how to paint them step by step. We all learned a lot and had a great time. The second class we did a private lesson for a 10 year old. Ada let her choose what she wanted to paint and they did acrylics. She taught her how to layer colors and provide shadows and depth for the various items in her painting. We would definitely return and appreciated Ada's friendliness and expertise.

I recommend getting there early enough to get a prime spot. Especially if you have a larger group and want to sit together. The instructor goes around and helps people when needed. We had an assistant floating around refilling peoples paints & paper towels. I took a painting course in college and I have a few of my own paintings in my home. I attended this event with someone that had not painted since elementary school. The events are able to please and entertain a broad range of abilities. Everyone was having fun. In-between instruction/demonstration, they kick up the music. Our instructor chose a great playlist. It really put me into a creative groove and had me singing along. You are free to order drinks wherever the event is being held at, just drink responsibly. It was so fun to walk around at the end of the evening and see everyone's execution and interpretation of the piece. Most of the events sell out way in advance, so keep your eyes open!

I am moved to write this review for Studio 1.6 out of a profound appreciation for the positive…read moreimpact that my art classes have done to enhance the quality of my life in general, but particularly during this era of shelter in place. About a year ago, I started as a beginning art student at Studio 1.6 and was intimidated about doing art, having been pretty much estranged from it since Kindergarten! But I'd observed Anita working with my son at camp and I trusted her to help me through! And true to her nature, Anita has offered me thoughtful instruction, gentle direction and enthusiastic encouragement. Anita is particularly skilled as a teacher as she teaches art skills while actively encouraging creativity and self expression. The Studio 1.6 classes have offered a range of art projects and hands on learning experience on working with different mediums and art subjects. Over time, I have gained some confidence in my nascent art abilities, but most importantly, I have enjoyed becoming more aware of what I see. This enhanced awareness creeps up at times when I am not "doing my art,' but simply shows up wherever I might be. I've become more attuned and "present" to my environment and have noticed visual things, I'd otherwise have missed. When the shelter in place began, Anita worked very hard to quickly learn how to convert our in studio experience to a meaningful online one, which included creating bags of art supplies for us to use at our homes. It was really a marvel to see how well she has succeeded in not only presenting lessons and making videos, but how she is able to give us feedback and suggestions in real time. Perhaps this burst of flexibility and creativity stems from the great artist she is! Anita has also generously encouraged her students to reach out to her between lessons to get feedback on class art work if we have been able to do more outside of class. Finally, I am so grateful to have my art lessons and projects as my "personal respite" providing hours of calm from my worries and responsibilities. It makes me happy.

My semester was great and accomplished some really nice pieces with her help. Love how she nudges you to try all different types of media. My next piece was doing charcoal, a medium that I never used before. We just had an art show at the end of the semester. The talent from everyone was incredible! I was especially impressed with the kids art. Wow! She also has summer programs for the kids. Wish I had this outlet when I was there age. Highly recommend! Looking forward to developing my skills deeper over time with her. Thank you so much Anita. ;)
