Working out of town and directed to Single Speed Brewing as a good place for a group event. Single Speed is a micro brewery and also serves a variety of tasty appetizers. Great cozy atmosphere with several large screen TVs to watch sports located right on Main Street of the downtown. Band had been playing on the adjacent street directly outside the bar when we went. The beer is brewed onsite and there is a glass window in the back that allows you to see into the brewing room. About 16 different selections to choose from. I choose the "16 Days" which was very smooth and pleasant to drink. The group I was with choose a variety of the other custom brews and all were enjoyed. The appetizers at this place are absolutely outstanding. You order your food in the very back. One person working the kitchen, but he gets it done. There are daily specials as well. We got a selection to share among the table. Went with Honey Sriracha Chicken Wings ( Ale-brined, wet-rubbed, baked & gently sauced) - tasty, Shrimp Red Pepper Flatbread ( Sundried tomato pesto, shrimp, roasted red pepper, baby bella and Mozzarella), Prosciutto Provolone Flatbread (Olive oil, prosciutto, baby bella, artichoke, roasted red pepper, fresh Mozzarella), Pesto Garden Not So Flatbread (Basil pesto, baby bellas, roasted Roma tomato, fresh Mozzarella and basil on toasted baguette) - the whole table loved this one and a couple of others. Absolutely fantastic place that I'm glad to say is in Cedar Falls. Located downtown, it makes for a fun place to try out some new beers, fill a growler, and just enjoy the atmosphere. I wouldn't come here for the food, but I love coming here for their beer offerings. It's friendly, laid-back, and comfortable. Plus, the beer is great. They have half-booths and standard chairs as well as tall chairs and tables. There aren't a lot of seating options, and I imagine this place fills up pretty fast in the peak bar hours, but the seating works well and is comfortable for mid-day drinking and socializing on weekends. -Very friendly service and laid-back atmosphere. Bartender was very knowledgeable, and you can tell there are a lot of regular locals that come here as well as she would greet people by name and had a friendly running rapport with patrons. We never had to wait for service, though, and she was good about pausing her conversations to get us drinks. -Beer menus are extremely descriptive. They go above-and-beyond the standard brewery menus that just list ABV, beer type, and name. They have OG, IBU, ABU, the name of the beer, and a long description about the beer. They also have a nice variety of beers available at once. You aren't just going to get a couple different flavors of light beers - they have darker options and some unique options as well. -Dedicated to conserving energy. I've had the opportunity to listen to the owner talk about their expansion plans and how they plan to try to be energy-conscious as they do so - while still making fantastic beer. They're currently expanding into a new facility (in addition to the CF one) built into the historic Wonder Bread building in Waterloo. -Flights are super reasonable. So is the price of beer itself. $5 gets you a full flight, and we spent hours drinking and went out with a bill of less than $40 for three people. CONS: -The food definitely is on the pricier side - especially as it's mostly bar-type food and may not offer a completely filling experience. Most of the food on the menu looks good for snacking, but for the prices (around $8-10 for most), you might be best off getting dinner somewhere else downtown and then only purchasing some food for snacks if you get hungry during your bar experience. That being said, most of the food they serve DOES feel more like high-quality appetizer food with fresh ingredients rather than the usual junk-food bar offerings. So you're definitely paying for decent food options - but just not large portions. -Wasn't particularly fond of the pretzels I ordered. The mustard, according to a tablemate, was very delicious. (Not a huge fan of mustard, myself) The cheese wasn't my favorite, though. It was extremely cheesy at the bottom and pretty liquid-y at the top. The pretzels themselves, though, while unsalted, were good. Nice and soft and chewy. They definitely had the right consistency. Ok so before I explain my rating... I really liked this place. Cute vibe, funny beer names and an overall nice spot. It is very small with a small amount of room on the patio. They have about 10 beers to choose from and some beer cocktails. I didnt have anything to drink. They have a tiny menu selection. I am vegan so I tried my luck at nachos and salsa. They were out of salsa but I was able to do flatbread with oil and veggies. It was really good. The beer server stays behind the bar area and you go up to order. The food is at the back and you pay separately. There are two tvs that were playing the ball game. Overall cute vibe. You want to go to chat and have some beers. read more

Not bad for Iowa. I just don't think there's a lot of options around here. This is a great place to have drinks and watch a game. It's a good place to eat but not great. I enjoyed my burger...I can't remember what it was called but it had Siracha and bacon on it. The sweet potato fries were good too. The Iowa Ramen was a great idea but the execution fell a little short. Broth was a bit bland. Noodles were decent. The local cider was really good as well as the local rye...Templeton. Be careful if u order the cheesecake for dessert. It's not really your grandmas cheesecake. If your grandma ever made cheesecake. Hands down my and my fiancé's favorite brewery by far. We LOVE this place and gush about it to all our friends. We take all out of towners there, and when we didn't live in town anymore, we would stop by and get a growler filled when we were passing through. What a wonderful little treasure for Cedar Falls. The beer is well-crafted and the best I've ever had. They also have food now as well. We like to go on Flatbread Friday and get a bogo flatbread deal! We really enjoyed our visit to Single Speed! It's in my hometown and this was our first visit. We went to try the beer and add it to our growing list of 60+ craft brewery visits! We ordered 2 flights (of 4 tasters each) between us which covered all 7 of their taps plus an extra Triple Threat IPA. My husband and I agree the beer was mediocre. Some were better than others, nothing that made us really excited either. Their triple threat IPA was by far the best of the 7. Funny because when we asked for a recommendation of which beer to double up in our flights both bartenders answered the Triple Threat because of its alcohol content and "more bang for the buck." We were there to taste good beer, but appreciated the recommendation!! It was tasty and we were happy to see our friend later picked up a growler of it for a party. They also had 4-5 other taps like Confluence, Boulevard, and Founders. They have a full bar of Iowa made rums, whiskeys, and bourbons! We think that's pretty cool, and they have some tequila on the shelves as well. The food menu looked fantastic but unfortunately we had to scoot. We have heard great things and saw some yummy food coming from the kitchen. Atmosphere was super awesome! The bartenders were very nice and informative. We mostly spoke with Daniel, who imformed us he is the chef. I got a cool shirt to commemorate the visit to my home town's first and only craft brewery! The service was okay we had a server who was good but needed a little more practice before being put on a Saturday afternoon shift. Best place to stop and grab a brew in the Cedar Valley! Great tasting beers at reasonable prices. Only $5 for a flight of beers is a great deal if you want to find what beer you like the best. Don't expect to get Bud light or Miller Light here. Also on weekend nights it fills up pretty quickly as it isn't a large place. Good place to hit up in the afternoon for a drink. SingleSpeed is a magical koi fish in a pond full of just regular bar goldfish. So I guess they are kinda like the flavor blasted goldfish. If SingleSpeed was a animal it would be that hybrid dinosaur from Jurassic World that kills all the other dinosaurs and is unstoppable. You don't eat the food at SingleSpeed the food eats you, but in a good way. The beer and food at SingleSpeed are like Captain Planet - with their powers combined you will be transformed and your heart will swell like Gaia. We hit up Single Speed a few weekends ago when I was in town. My friend suggested we get a flight of that night's beers and then choose our pints from that. Sounded good to me and the flight - four delicious beers, along with a brief description of each from the barman - was $5!! Can't be beat! I got a pint of the cocoa raspberry porter and it was so cool how the flavors opened up in my mouth. It was sort of like having one of those little chocolate squares with the thin layer of raspberry gelee inside...but boozier. It was fantastic and Single Speed will be on my list of places to belly up to every time I return to the Cedar Valley. read more

In the Cedar Valley for the weekend and it's always a priority to find a craft brewery in the area. In Waterloo/Cedar Falls this is the only game in town. Single Speed is situated in downtown Cedar Falls, on an eclectic street filled with boutique shops and restaurants. I love breweries that occupy older buildings, it just seems to give them more character. Parking was a little difficult on a Friday late afternoon but that's not a huge gripe and definitely not their problem. The tap room isn't really a big space. A handful of tables and chairs and then about six seats at the bar. A couple of TVs on the wall were showing the Master's Tournament but otherwise not a huge emphasis on TV viewing. I really liked the hanging lights above the bar that were made out of growlers. Never seen that done before. They had about eight or nine of their own brews on tap and then about six guest brews from various Iowa breweries. I like to see cooperation within the craft industry in Iowa. It gives the people of the area a chance to try beers from other parts of the state they might not normally get a chance to. Since I had a long night ahead of me still I opted for a the lighter Tricycle cream ale and the WhiteWater Black Beer. The Tricycle was refreshing with good flavor. At a little over 5% it would make for an excellent session beer. The WhiteWater Black Beer came in at a little over 6%. Had a very nice roasty flavor but wasn't over filling. They do have a menu of apps and flat breads. The guy down at the end of the bar ordered their hot wings and I about pulled the trigger on my own order but I was meeting people later on for dinner and decided not to. Their menu isn't very deep but they had some interesting items on it. Great brewery in a cool area of town. I wouldn't pass up a chance to hit this place up if you're in the Cedar Valley. read more

This was one of the first places I visited after I moved to Cedar Falls and I find myself in here every week. While small, it's atmosphere and vibe are a great asset to Main Street. The beers are solid with a great variety from which to choose. Additionally, they offer beer flights allowing you to easily find your favorites. Not only is the beer good, but the menu is definitely worth sampling. That being said, don't expect 5 pages of options. The menu is somewhat limited, there are some great offerings to accompany your beers. If you're into wings, order them here. Good people, good beer, good food. It's a no brainer. read more

This tiny place hits a home run on a number of fronts: first, great brews. Second, you can pair your brewed beverage with something distilled by Cedar Ridge, which makes a nice array of delicious whiskeys, including a couple of excellent ryes. Can't beat the quaintly coolness of Single Speed. One of the best additions to Cedar Falls with respect to the food and beverage choices. Concept, branding, and execution of business plan seems spot on. Just hoping they keep this cool place open after they move into their larger endeavor in Waterloo that will include a distribution, full-scale restaurant, and store fronts. Please stay in CF too! I've only been here once since I don't live in the area, but it was for a food/beer pairing event which was awesome! All the beers were fantastic, Clementine was my favorite. It is not a huge place, but cozy enough to feel welcomed. Chef Dan put together an awesome menu with everything from pho to marrow. It's an ok pub/brewery, but don't bother with the food. We arrived about 11:15 on a Saturday and placed our food order (chicken tacos and Amish pretzels). Took 45 minutes to get food (they weren't busy) and it was NOT good when we received it. Chicken on tacos was over cooked, and there was barely anything on the small flour taco shell other than the over cooked chicken. Likewise, the pretzel was overcooked and served with a watery mixture that was allegedly cheese mustard sauce. Such a shame since food at the Waterloo location is so good. read more

Always try to fit a local brewery when I am visiting a different town. Stopped by this cute place while on a business trip. The bicycle theme is different and sorta fun. Good variety of beers to choose from. I had a flight so I could try 4 of the beers at once. All had good flavor and were nicely made. Could have been a little colder. They have a little piece of paper that shows what beers are on tap and explains a little about them. Reminded me a little of Loveland, OH, with all of the bicyclists coming in for a drink. There is a bike trail right behind the establishment. The young lady that served me was friendly and seemed to enjoy being there. It wasn't very busy, so I didn't get to see the servers in action while the place was hopping. I will stop back if ever in the area again. read more

Great place for beer. I spend a lot of time here and I almost always meet someone from out of town that rolls in looking to see what a brewery is all about. The employees are very knowledgeable and can match your past beer favorites with the current ones on tap. SingleSpeed also takes part in a lot of local events in the area and I'm a huge soft trails biker. Very excited for the new location to open in Waterloo late April/Early May! read more

We love this place. We always order at the bar and never at our table. The beer cocktails are yummy but can be a little spendy ($7). I suggest the beer flight ($5). All of the bartenders in this heavenly location are beautiful beaming sun rays with more knowledge of beer than Mufasa had of all the light touches. The chefs have clearly sold their souls in a Faustian manner for the flatbread perfection they've achieved and I would do the same just to ensure that I have eternal access to this holy cuisine that is the coveted Singlespeed flatbread. read more

Walked out after 10 minutes sitting in the bar with only 7 other people in the entire place. Bartender never even looked up from whatever he was writing to acknowledge we walked in the door. Awful, miserable excuse of a brewpub! Looked cute too and we love trying new places and even looked at the display of tees on the wall. Appalling that there was only 1 employee there and he was too busy to even say "hey, welcome to Singlespeed" or "hi guys, be with you in a minute". Or how about try to remember that you're a relatively new place and if you ever hope to stay around maybe try to build your business by being decent and actually try to get people to enjoy their experience at your place. I have to admit the place looked cool but the total lack of service ruined it. We will never be back. Silver lining...We walked across the street to Harry's and the general manager happened to be working. Guess what, he greeted us as we walked in the door! Stayed there the rest of the night and had a great time. Harry's has great craft beers, cool kitschy decor and best of all, service and staff with personality! We sat outside and the staff member went inside (we were thinking to get menus), after waiting for more than 20 mins for someone to come to our table we got up and left. By chance, I was at the new Single Speed Brewery in Waterloo, IA, twice in the last week. I had a fabulous experience both times. The architects did a great job converting the old Wonder Bread factory, keeping just enough of the old elements to be fun and charming. The staff was friendly and helpful. Besides great beer, the food was fabulous. Yes, one can get the usual "pub grub" of burgers and hot wings, but the menu also features specialty salads, salmon, Brussel sprouts (yes, Brussel sprouts) cooked in a peanut/hoisin sauce that will make you love the veggie. For those who do not like beer (and there are a few nutters like that, including my friend Mary), there is a full bar and a selection of Iowa wines. The owner is committed to local suppliers as much as is possible. There are many other positives: a play area for children, vintage video games, darts, and a repair station for bicyclists. Leftovers are boxed in cardboard containers and the spent grain is given to local hog farmers because, well, the environment matters. The place has only been open for a few weeks so there are some start up hiccups. They ran out of Pinot Grigio, so my friend Mary was sad. Salmon was not available (well, it is Iowa), and for some unknown reason, they decided to start playing music making in hard to have a conversation in an already loud space.
