I have been taking lessons with Sherry for about six months now and it has been truly a transformative experience. Sherry is a professional, kind, patient and supportive teacher with a passion for singing and performing. When I first started working with her, whenever she asked me what song I'd like to sing I'd often say "I want to do this song, but I don't think I can" and she would tell me she thinks I can and we can work on it together. Then we would break down the song and apply techniques where I can overcome my weaknesses and play to my strengths. She provides constructive criticism and gives you just enough of a push to grow without being too harsh. I find myself being able to sing songs that I previously struggled with or never thought I'd be able to sing. I was not looking for a voice coach when I ran into an instagram posting of Sherry's ONLINE singing lessons. Singing in the car or shower is the extent of my singing experience. My mother was an opera singer when she was young, but now has dementia. She brightens up when she hears music or we sing songs together. I thought this might be a fun thing to do during quarantine in hopes to sound decent for mom. I was a bit hesitant as I thought I may be too old to improve my voice. I emailed Sherry and she literally responded within 30 minutes saying that YES! I can improve! I really trusted her and signed up! From the get go, Sherry made me feel at ease. I thought, this poor girl has to listen to my voice, but she continued to encourage me and eventually, she got me to loosen up and be free to sing. Not only is Sherry a talented singer with a voice that makes me melt, but she is an incredible and effective instructor. Sherry had to start from the very beginning with me. First she had me sing a song to see where I was at. She then gave me some drills to work on the muscles of my mouth. I then chose a song to work on. She goes through each line and shows me the best way to sing it. Each lesson starts with several different warm ups to work on various areas of the mechanics of singing. Sometimes I was encouraged, sometimes I was frustrated, but we kept working on it. At first I thought I could never get singing forward down. Now I don't realize I'm actually doing it. Although I don't know much about singing, I do realize that I have improved. I now can sing certain parts of a favorite song without running out of air or cracking. I transition from chest voice to head and back to chest with much more ease. I thought that would never happen. Having these bits of improvement really encourages me to keep at it. On top of that, Sherry always boosts me up with affirmations of advancement. When you finally accomplish something that you have been working hard at, its so exciting! I've always felt very self-conscious and shy about singing in public (in spite of loving music, and plenty of solo singing in the car, not to mention, the shower!), and even avoided and dreaded the ever-popular karaoke bar. It wasn't until I met Sherry that I felt encouraged enough to try lessons because she made singing easy and accessible. An accomplished singer and talented performer herself (www.sherryshaoling.com) Sherry breaks down the fundamentals of singing into bite-sized pieces, and literally walked me through fun building-block exercises that then cumulated into yours truly singing (gasp, shock!). In her vocal studio, Sherry first had me stand and connect to my body via hissing like a snake, and more specifically, my ribcage, to work on supporting the breath. As a yogi, this connection to the breath became instant for me, and I was surprised to experience how powerfully long I could sustain sound (must be all the kundalini meditation chanting I've done)! Next, she asked me to hum -- another powerful yet totally simple tool in learning to sing. Sherry then had me try "bubbling", which reminded me of making motor sounds with my mouth as a kid; sounds totally easy, right? Yet, bubbling turns out to be an important method in exercising breath control. We next tried several "vocalises," aka vocal warm-ups, with Sherry on her electric Yamaha keyboard http://goo.gl/8ruZkV, and me standing beside her. I was surprised how much concentration and focus I needed, in order to remember supporting my breath with my ribcage, controlling the amount of air coming out, and listening to the piano scale in order to sing along. And yet, it all felt super chill, almost meditative, and totally easy to do under Sherry's guidance. With each warm-up she helped me get in touch with areas of my face, mouth, and jaw to correctly place the voice in my mask. The great thing about singing is that I hear the difference immediately, with each slight tweak and adjustment, and, using a nearby wall mirror, I helped adjust my mouth's shape. We worked on "legato" or smoothness, and also in preventing any hard glottal sounds in order to give my singing a smooth beginning of each phrase. With each vocalise, Sherry encouraged me, and reminded me to relax my shoulders and neck. Aside from teaching total beginners like moi, Sherry specializes in helping tone deaf folks match pitches, and karaoke singers improve their performance and mic technique. She's even able to train you in classical singing, art songs, and opera, not to mention vocal jazz, and Broadway singing. Wow! We ended the lesson by tackling a song -- yes, me, singing a song, in front of another person! -- utilizing all the tools she'd taught me (humming, bubbling) to grasp the lyrics and melody of the song. It was really fun singing alongside with Sherry, and even now, I'm humming the tune inside my head. Besides, my diaphragm got a total healthy work out, and I got to be out of my head for a structured amount of time (which is always a good thing!). First, she helped me find my range, which until now I had never known. Then, she helped me sample some songs that she said were in my range. After we went through a number of songs, she helped me select the two that I needed to audition. We practiced them over and over, with her even playing the music without me singing so I could record it on my phone and practice when I left. When I left my appointment, I felt extremely confident in my selected pieces, and at our next appointment, she helped me step-by-step through each one to add that "spit-and-polish" and make my audition pieces my own, changing them from a good, standard representation of the songs into audition pieces that reflect myself and my personality. Sherry's patience and musical knowledge are vast, and her personality makes her super easy to work with. When my young daughter started taking interest in singing I begin my search for a singing teacher that can help her development her singing skills. I found Sherry through a friend's review on Yelp. My daughter has been taking lesson from her for about 6 months and has increase her vocal range from Sherry's training and encouragement. Not only is she great with children she is also excellent with adults. My husband has been struggling with the use of his voice for a few years now. He has been going to throat specialist , done biopsy, and MRI to figure out why he has chronic laryngitis. All these test couldn't find any reason for his low speech volume. I have been taking lessons with sherry for four months now and I am truly impressed with her tremendous musical knowledge and incredibly effective teaching style. I conducted a little experiment to see if my voice was really getting better. My friends and I go out to karaoke once a week, and I didn't tell any of them that I was taking lessons, so I could see if they noticed a change. A little over two years ago, I started taking singing lessons from Sherry and I highly recommend her to anyone else looking to improve their singing abilities. Sherry's classes are a great balance of technique work to build a foundation and working on songs (which is really why we all want to sing in the first place).
